Chapter 5

249 Words
He'd said that more than once, and I believed him every time. Each time, I ended up hurt. It wasn't that they were actually cheating. It was that every time something came up between Daisy and me, he chose her. Like that time it rained. I didn't have an umbrella, and Austin said he'd bring me one. Our offices weren't far apart—just a ten-minute walk. After work, I waited for him under the eaves of my office building. Half an hour passed. He never showed. Worried something had happened, I called him. Daisy answered. "Summer, Austin's in the shower right now. Can I take a message?" Hearing that manipulative tone sent my blood pressure through the roof. I hung up immediately. Later, Austin explained that Daisy was sick and he'd only gone to drop off medicine. He'd showered because he got caught in the rain, and Daisy didn't want him to catch a cold. But he never considered that I'd been standing in the cold breeze outside my office building for ages—might I get sick too? No. It didn't even cross his mind to call. This kind of thing happened more times than I could count. But this time, Austin swore he'd never see Daisy again. I saw Daisy chasing after him, her eyes reddening at his words, then glaring at me with pure hatred. I shot her a defiant look back, then hooked my arm through Austin's right in front of her jealous gaze.
