Chapter one: The Deal That Changed Everything
The shrill ringing of Aisha Daniels' phone cut through the thick, suffocating silence in the room. Her heart pounded as she picked it up, her hands trembling slightly. It was her mother.
“Aisha… come home. Now.”
The fear in her mother’s voice made her stomach knot. Without hesitation, she grabbed her bag and rushed out of the boutique where she worked part-time, her mind racing with dreadful possibilities.
When she arrived at the family mansion, the sight that met her eyes froze her to the spot.
Her father sat slumped on the couch, his face buried in his hands. His once-proud figure looked small, broken, defeated. Her mother paced the living room, tears streaming down her face.
“Daddy… what’s going on?” Aisha asked, her voice shaking.
Her father raised his bloodshot eyes to meet hers, and in that moment, she saw it — the devastation, the defeat.
“It’s over, Aisha,” he whispered. “We’ve lost everything. The company… the properties… everything.”
Aisha’s breath caught in her throat.
“How? What happened?”
Before her father could respond, a deep, cold voice spoke from behind her.
“I happened.”
Aisha turned sharply, and her heart skipped a beat.
There, standing tall in a dark tailored suit, was Xavier Kane — the man she had only seen on TV and in business magazines. Ruthless. Cold. The billionaire tycoon who had made his fortune destroying others.
And now… he was in her home.
“You,” she hissed, her hands clenching into fists. “What the hell are you doing here?”
Xavier's lips curved into a mocking smile.
“I came to offer a solution to your family’s… unfortunate situation.”
Aisha’s stomach churned at the smugness in his tone.
“What do you want?”
He stepped closer, his dark eyes gleaming like a predator.
“Simple. Marry me.”
The room spun.
“What?” she gasped.
“You heard me,” Xavier said smoothly. “One year. You’ll be Mrs. Kane for twelve months. In return, I’ll clear your father’s debts, return this house to your family, and make sure your mother gets the medical care she needs.”
Aisha’s heart pounded painfully in her chest.
“And what do you get out of it?”
A shadow passed over his face.
“Revenge.”
Her father buried his face in his hands again.
“Don’t do it, Aisha. He’s a monster.”
Xavier’s gaze never left hers.
“You have until midnight to decide. Say yes… and your family lives in comfort. Say no… and you’ll all be on the streets by dawn.”
Tears blurred Aisha’s vision.
She hated him.
Hated his arrogance.
Hated his cold, calculated cruelty.
But she loved her family more.
“Fine,” she spat, lifting her chin. “I’ll marry you. But don’t expect me to love you, Kane. I’ll be your wife in name only.”
Xavier’s smirk deepened.
“We’ll see about that, Mrs. Kane.”
He pulled a sleek black folder from his briefcase and handed it to her.
“Sign here.”
Her hand trembled as she took the pen. The moment the ink touched the paper, she knew — her life would never be the same again.
And neither would his.
