Nostalgia
At exactly 2:55 pm, the American airway landed in country X. Passengers exited the plane and it was finally her turn.
She fidgeted on her sit before standing up abruptly and moved towards the exit door.
The moment she opened the cabin door, nothing in several years had prepared her for what she felt at that moment.
The dusty rain and woodly scent of the atmosphere brought back memories she thought she had buried deep down her heart.
Her nose stung severally, her eyes watered.
Just then, a little hand tug hard at her cloth. The small voice steadying her heart.
"Mummy, are you day dreaming again? The sun is on my face!"
Shit! She cursed inwardly, sniffing quickly to stop the tears.
"I'm so sorry baby, Mama got a bit of nostalgia. She apologized quickly, then held her hand and moved towards the exit of the airport.
Maya, the little girl scrunch her nose up as if thinking of something. "Mummy, what is nostalgia?
Milan smiled slightly, she knew it was only a matter of time before she asked. Her child began the habit of curating every new word she learnt.
"It is a warm feeling when you remember both happy and sad memories."
Maya smile fell off when she heard the word sad. Then she said with a little serious face, trying to act mature, "don't worry mummy, no one is going to make you sad again."
"Awwn... My baby!" She found her countenance cute and couldn't help but pause, pull her cheeks a little and smear kisses all over her face.
Maya furrowed her brows and pushed her away from her, "stop it mummy, we are outside," She said turning around to see if anyone was staring.
Milan chuckled, I'm the mother here right? She thought confused by her daughter display of maturity.
"Fine! I would leave you alone but you owe me a peck, deal? She said.
Maya placed her pinky finger on her cheek as if contemplating. Deal," She said and they both shook hands then continued walking towards their bags.
"Isn't aunty Jess coming to pick us?" Maya asked.
"I don't think so baby, her line isn't going through... Maybe something important came up at work." She replied.
"Okay," Maya said a little above whisper.
Milan noticed immediately, "hey, common baby..." She crouched down and held her both arms. "Aunty Jess would come as soon as she's done, okay?
"Okay mummy."
She could see she was still unhappy so she said, "from here, we would go try out different foods before going home.
"Yee!! Maya jumped happily.
The moment they left the airport, Milan hailed a taxi and they went to a downtown restaurant located at the very edge of the city.
They had just settled down when the owner of the restaurant came to take their order.
The old woman blinked twice, Xao Xi..." She called unbelievably. "Is it you?"
Milan stood up immediately and went closer, "yes aunty," she said nodding her head.
"Aigoo...aigoo, where have you been all this years? I thought I would never see you again!"
"Abroad," she smiled brightly tears glistening in her eyes.
The woman eyes moved to Maya. She moved her shaky legs as she pointed, "is... Is this your child?"
"Hmm..." She muttered unable to reply properly due to tears.
The woman shaky hands grabbed Maya and kissed her severally, tears rolling down her eyes.
Milan quickly told Maya. "This is Grandma Shelma."
"Good afternoon Grandma," she greeted bubbly but confusion brewing in her eyes.
The older woman heart melted the moment she heard Maya call her grandma. She pulled her in for a hug.
Then she pulled away. "Enough of this," she said wiping her tears.
"What would you like to eat?"
"The usual aunty," she said then turned to Maya, "wait here, while I help Grandma with the food."
"No... No... No, I would serve you my child." Aunty shelma disagreed and hurried off.
The moment she left, Maya turned to her mom, "mummy I thought you said Grandma is dead?
"Yes mama, that is true but Grandma Shelma took care of me for a while when I was a child."
"Ohh... So she's not my biological grandma but my grandma in common sense."
"Yes." Milan nodded.
I wish she was your biological grandma though, she thought to herself sadly.
Seconds later, aunt shelma came in with a platter of food.
"Thank you," Milan greeted.
Aunt shelma waved her off, "enough of that and enjoy your food." She said and walked away.
One hour later, the two ladies were completely filled and could no longer eat.
"The food is so delicious! Maya complimented the food.
"That's aunt Shelma for you. Mama," she called them add, "I need to use the restroom, wait here and don't go anywhere.
Meanwhile, in a certain black Mercedes, Hayes was looking at a document completely immersed in it as his personal assistant reported the recent development of an old site.
"Mr Walker Anderson, the CEO of snow fashion is requesting for a meeting."
"What does he want?" He asked raising his head from the document.
"He want to partner with us with the importation of leather."
"Scheduled a meeting," he replied, looking outside.
Suddenly his pupil shrank, "pull over," he said urgently staring at a particular thing.
Mark turned his head also, trying to see what made his boss whose composure is always on a hundred— crumbling.
Lo and behold, in a restaurant... A young girl sat down at a corner quietly sipping some juice. But what caught his attention, was the fact that the girl had a striking resemblance to his boss ex-wife.
Hayes on the other hand came out of the car in a swift motion and with five long strides, he was already at the door of the restaurant.
He quietly walked up to Maya.
Maya felt someone at her back so she turned around and their eyes met.
Hayes stepped back, his eyes wide, his mouth quavering.
Maya frowned wondering why a strange man is looking at her like that. "Uncle, do you need something?"
"No... I mean yes," he stuttered unable to think properly.
He quickly shook his head to think straight. Then he walked to the seat next to her, "can I sit?" He asked Maya politely.
Maya stared at him from up to down like she's was scrutinizing him before letting him sit.
He sat down quickly and tried starting a conversation.
"What's your name, child?"
"My mummy asked me not to tell strangers my name," she said.
"That's right... Are you with your mummy?" He asked.
"Yes..." Maya said looking around. "There she is!" She said, pointing towards a corner.
