4.Confrontations

If looks could kill, Alexa would’ve been in the morgue now. She couldn’t help but shift in her seat as she felt Zane’s uncomfortable gaze at her, which lasted throughout the conference. She hated the fact that they were both seated in the same row and how, until now, he still acted as if it was her whole fault that their marriage fell apart. Her heart burst in anger as she remembered everything that he had done five years ago. That same intensity in his eyes, that same voice accusing her of things that she didn’t even do… Alexa clutched her chest, trying to prevent another panic attack. She refuses to show Zane her weakness. The last time she did, he didn’t care. He even shoved her down a bottomless pit and left her there to rot. “You look uncomfortable, Miss Havencourt,” James whispered to her while showing her the list of itineraries she had for the whole week. She shrugged, taking the notebook. “I’m fine. I’m just slightly irritated by Zane’s glances at me,” she softly answered. She sighed before leaning her back against the chair. “This is exhausting…” “Do you want us to switch places?” James suggested. Alexa waved her hand, turning him down. After all, she planned this. If anything else, she should just endure it until the conference ends. She has to show him that she isn’t affected anymore by his presence, nor that she’s still hoping for reconciliation. Zane Williams is the worst person in the whole world, so she shouldn’t even be thinking about him like that. The conference lasted a bit longer than she thought. When the guests started leaving, Alexa decided to get up and prepare to rest in their hotel room upstairs. James had long bailed out, leaving her in the middle of the program to check on her daughter. Ariana must’ve been sleeping by now. She would be busy for the next few days, so she should at least spend time with her daughter. “Alexa, can we talk?” She froze in place as soon as she heard that deep baritone voice. He stayed silent throughout the conference, and now he wants to talk? She turned, faking a smile. “What do you want, Mr. Williams?” Zane’s eyes were painted with some strange emotion that she had never seen before. After all, he had always been cold to her. He never showed her any ounce of affection. That night they parted, and all that she could see on his face was anger. “Why didn’t you tell me any of this when we were married?” She scoffed. Oh. So he was thinking about business. She took her purse and tried to avoid his eyes. “I don’t know. You were never home, so who am I supposed to tell everything?” It was Zane’s turn to laugh bitterly. “Never home? Is that why you found someone to replace me?” Her head tilted in confusion. Was he thinking that James was the one she cheated on him? Alexa laughed. “You really like to jump to conclusions, Mr. Williams.” “Weren’t you the same?” Zane asked. “I tried explaining to you back then, but you still went on with the divorce. Were you that eager to leave me, Miss Havencourt?” His voice was starting to gather attention from people around them. Alexa felt her stomach knotting and her vision slowly getting blurry. Was he planning to humiliate themselves in the middle of this crowd? “Why I left you is none of your business anymore, Zane. We’re nothing but strangers now. So please, if you’ll excuse me,” she softly said. Her knees were trembling as she tried to walk away, but his strides were bigger, and he managed to catch her arm. “It is my business,” he insisted. “Why you hate me, why you want to leave, why I didn’t even see you for the past five years, all of those were my business. So don’t blame me if I’m being persistent.” “Ha! Where’s that persistence when we were married?” she shot back. “You always let me be when we were together, so why can’t you do the same now? Don’t worry, Mr. Williams. I’m not going to tarnish your reputation. Unlike your precious Janna, I don’t run around ruining people’s images.” Her patience was running thin, so Alexa tried to turn around but Zane’s hand still stopped her from doing so. “Alex—” “Zane! We still have to go to the director’s office today…” Janna interrupted, wrapping her hands around his waist. She threw her a hostile glance that Alexa couldn’t help but laugh and cross her arms. “Mr. Williams, if you want to talk to me, please make sure that you have no prior engagements. I don’t want to be a bother to you.” Alexa managed to walk away, leaving Zane stunned and Janna smiling triumphantly. Deep inside, she could feel this heavy sensation in her chest that she couldn’t mask. For all she knew, she had long convinced herself that Zane Williams would never be worth it, so why did her heart ache when she saw them together? Janna Smith has been the same reason why she went through with the divorce. She kept on telling her when Zane wasn’t around that she stole him from her. That she should give him back when he was always with her instead of his own wife at home. It wasn’t her fault that Zane wouldn’t accept his mistakes. But what did she ever do wrong that he had to rub it into her face that he and his mistress won? Those thoughts made Alexa steel her gut. She won’t give Janna the pleasure of seeing her show emotions once again when it comes to Zane. The moment she left the mansion that night, she promised herself that Zane Williams wouldn’t make her cry anymore. She let out a deep sigh and took out her phone to call James. She was so exhausted from the long trip and meeting those two that she didn’t want to stay in the same room as her ex-husband and his mistress. She had enough of them today. “James, is Ari with you? I want to go home—” The frantic and panicking voice of her assistant echoed through the phone. “Miss Havencourt, your daughter’s missing!”
