Chapter Nine

Wynn’s POV
“How do you know that you don’t even know me?”
“I know everything about you.” He says with a huge grin.
“You think you do. Knowing me from afar and knowing the real me are two very different things.”
“I will agree with you on that. I’m getting off on the wrong foot.”
“The moment you entered my life was on the wrong foot. Chelle told me about you. I have no interest in you whatsoever.”
“You don’t know that Wynn. Give me a chance.”
“Do you see that guy over there?” I point at Cooper who is sitting talking to Ava and Victor.
“Yes, you’re Everlasting.”
“I want him. Not you. HIM. H-I-M. Do you understand that?”
“Yes, I understand that. I just think you’re shutting me off too soon.”
“I don’t think so. What are you anyway? You aren’t human. I was told that.” My temper is getting the better of me and my voice is getting louder.
“I’m an angel.” He says quietly. Trying to get me to lower my voice.
“An angel? You have got to be kidding me.” I laugh.
“I’m not kidding you.” He looks at me deadly seriously.
“Where are the wings? The feathers? The harps??” I’m laughing harder now, unable to stop.
“Wynn, you are buying into the stereotype.”
“It’s a funny stereotype.” I picture him with a halo and start laughing again.
“Okay I’ll meet with you on another day. Obviously, this was a bad idea.”
“It’s going to be a bad idea every time, Chadwick. You might want to count your losses.” I snicker at him.
“I’m not out. You have a good night.” Chadwick lets go of me and walks away.
Ava comes out to the dance floor. “He went away?”
“But to return another day.” I roll my eyes.
“You didn’t think it would be a one and done, did you?” She gives me the look.
“Yes, actually I kind of thought it might be.”
Ava laughs, “Silly, silly girl.”
“I am going to dance with Coop. It’s almost midnight.”
“Yes, it is birthday girl. I need to get everything ready for you.”
“What do you mean everything?” I look around.
“You’ll see. It’s just a little something.” Ava walks away smiling.
Cooper joins me on the dance floor. The first thing he does is kiss me. Which instantly puts me in a much better mood. He has me held close as we dance. He keeps kissing me and I’m getting out of my sour mood. “Feeling better now?” He asks as his hands tighten around my waist.
“Much better. Thank you. That’s good.”
“Yes, it is.”
“Happy birthday, beautiful.” He kisses me.
“A very happy birthday to me. I have you. It’s the best birthday ever.”
“That is the best compliment I’ve ever heard.” He kisses me softly.
I am so glad I found this man and he is my Everlasting. I think to myself. “I love you.”
“I love you.”
“Come on, Wynn. It’s time for birthday cake.” Victor says as he comes up to Cooper and me.
All my friends are over at one of the bigger tables with a cake. There are eighteen candles. I have no idea what to wish for when so much has already come true. Then it occurs to me what I should wish for. I make my wish and I feel the burden fall away. Colleen cuts the cake for everyone. Cooper ends up feeding me mine. Which is just such a turn on. When we get done, we dance for a little longer than head home. Everyone hugs me and wishes me a happy birthday. “I’ll see you all tomorrow at the theater. Don’t forget we have the special VIP section so make sure you sit in it.”
“We will. Don’t worry,” Katy says as she gets into Colleen’s car.
Everyone gets in their cars and drives away.
Cooper and I get home. Shelby is in the living room still awake. “What are you doing awake?” I ask her.
She looks guilty at me. Cooper tightens his hold on me. “What’s going on?” I ask.
“I had a visitor tonight.”
“Who?” This conversation is going far too slow.
“Chadwick.”
“WHAT DID YOU DO?” My face is red. I know she did something.
“I gave you away to have my Everlasting returned to me.”
Chelle shows up, “You can’t do that she has an Everlasting, and she is eighteen she can’t be given away.”
“He said I could. I signed a contract.”
Wynn slaps her mother across the face.
Chelle grabs the contract and reads it. “It’s null. Wynn must give up her Everlasting. She isn’t going to do that.”
“You wouldn’t do that for me?” Shelby pleads
“No. No I wouldn’t.”
Chadwick shows up in front of them. He smiles at Wynn. It’s a devilish smile. “What if I could offer you something big?”
I know what he’s thinking. I know it. I refuse. It’s not natural and I refuse.
“What if I bring your mom back?”
“That is against nature, Chadwick. You cannot offer that.” Chelle says.
“NO,” I say clearly.
“Why don’t I let you have a taste of it?”
“No. I do not want it in this time and place. I reject it.” I have no clue what made me say it that way, but something did.
Chadwick’s eyes got huge. “Why did you say it that way? WHY?”
“I just did.”
Chelle chuckles. “I didn’t say anything.”
Shelby shakes her head. “I null the contract.” She rips it into two. Golden sparks shine down the center as she rips it.
“What are you two doing? I’m giving you both everything you want, and you are pissing it away?” Chadwick asks. Clearly at his wits end.
“I think you should leave,” Cooper says.
“I will see you at your party.” Chadwick says as he goes to kiss my cheek. I push him away.
He looks at the four of us and disappears. Shelby is still shaking her head. “I don’t know what got into me. I would never do that.”
“You were under the influence.” Chelle explains.
“Under the influence?”
“An angel can intoxicate you so to speak so you do their bidding. It only works on certain things. It only lasts for a certain period of time. Unfortunately, he is breaking all the rules tonight. He is going to be in a lot of trouble. It’s so unlike him. He normally plays by the rules.” Chelle stands there thinking. Trying to piece everything together.
“Could someone have intoxicated him?” I ask Chelle.
“He is a high angel. It’s nearly impossible. I mean it can be done but it’s nearly impossible.”
“Not really impossible,” a voice behind us says. There is a whiff of black smoke around us and I’m laying on the floor unable to move.
