Aria’s POV
I walked into the white light in front of me, out from the storm that was in the living room, into the bright light that blinded me for a few moments until everything was quiet. As I kept on walking I could hear birds singing. My eyes adjusted to the new world that stood right in front of me. I looked behind me but the portal had already disappeared, now I stood alone on the street. I was in what looked like a small town with houses side by side on both sides of the street. In the further distance, at the end of the street stood a palace, a huge castle, shining in the sunlight. I guess this was a kingdom. There were fairies everywhere, little ones, old ones, fairies trying to sell fruits or vegetables on the sidewalks. The weather was warm, not like how warm weather is on earth, but different. If I thought about how nice and warm the weather was my heart became warm too. It made me feel really happy. No wonder every fairy here was smiling. I got a little lost in the beauty of this kingdom for a while. Everyone was so beautiful. Our wings glittered a bit in the sun, everyone had their own colored wings and their eyes always matched their wings. A male fairy with orange wings just walked into a house with a sign that said “Tea & Biscuits”, a little fairy girl with yellow wings and yellow eyes just ran past me laughing with her other two friends that ran after her, one was light blue and the other one dark orange, almost brown. Everyone seemed so happy. There were flowers everywhere, in the windows of each house, on the ground, green vines climbed up the walls.
I got lost in my own mind until I saw an old woman with crystal blue wings. Just like my mother had in the picture. That brought me back into reality. I needed to focus.
“Uh, excuse me, mister?” I said, trying to sound really friendly to the young fairy male, he was maybe a bit older than me and was selling carrots on one stand on the sidewalk. He had brown transparent wings that were shining in the sun and he smiled at me.
“A carrot?” He asked and handed me one as I approached him. I kindly refused and asked him: “Do you know a Clarissa?”
“No, well yes but only one.” He said.
“Oh, do you know where she lives?” I asked, hoping that the Clarissa he knew was my mother.
“I heard her house was further down the street.” He said and pointed me in the direction “but I have no idea which house it is, you’ll have to ask more people, especially if we’re talking about the same Clarissa.”
He said that last part as if he was confused about why I was even looking for her.
“Well, all I know is that she’s a crystal blue fairy.” I wanted him to confirm that it might be my mom but without telling him that it’s my mom. I couldn’t risk people knowing my mom’s story about being with a human. Because if they knew she had a daughter then they would definitely come to the conclusion that it would be half fairy and half human, which is against the fairy law.
“Yeah, I guess we might be talking about the same fairy.” He said his eyes a bit wide. “Might I ask why you’re looking for her?”
What do I say? Just say something but don’t sound suspicious or anything. Hmm…
“I’m her niece.” I said with a big smile. I hated lying. I was no good at it either. He looked at me and I was slowly starting to panic.
“I thought she didn’t have any relatives visiting her.” He said suspiciously.
“Of course she has relatives, even though we don’t always come to visit doesn’t mean we never do.” I could feel heat forming on my face.
“I heard she doesn’t let anyone inside her house.”
My heart broke a little at that sentence. Is she still in a bad condition even after 18 years? Why didn’t you try and go out and live your life a little even after all you’ve been through? I wish you lived a little mom.
“She has to let me in. I’m her niece after all. I’m going to go now and thank you.” I said. I was about to turn away when I could feel something poking me on the shoulder. I looked at the guy.
“You can just take it. I know her family isn’t allowed to live close to her so you must’ve traveled a long way just to meet her.” He said with kindness in his voice. He handed me a carrot and I thanked him and continued my journey further down the street.
After have been walking for a few minutes, I felt a little tingle in my stomach. Maybe it was the carrot I ate? I kept on walking and the tingle got stronger. I felt like butterflies were forming in my stomach. I looked around confused but nothing was grabbing my attention. I didn’t know when to stop walking and ask for further directions but I wanted to keep walking a bit further. I felt like I had to. I felt excited to go a bit further. There weren’t as many fairies here as there were up the street. I was drawn to one direction, to the right side of the street. I went there and looked at the house that stood in front of me. I was really curious about it, excited about it. I had no idea why. The house looked like any other house that stood on this street. Why do I feel so weird?
Then I heard voices and laughter behind it. I walked slowly around the house. I saw a green small garden but there was only grass and a few trees near the fence. In the garden were fairies, looked my age. There were five, 3 guys and 2 girls. They were talking, some laughing and one of them was balancing, what looked like a soccer ball on his knee. I went a bit closer just to see them better even though I didn’t want them to see me. I felt really drawn to those kids. I felt anxious…I think. Then the guy lost his ball and it rolled down in my direction. I backed up a bit about to hide but it was too late. We made eye contact and I held my breath, I wanted to run but instead, I managed to smile and I was about to walk away…like I hadn’t just been watching them.
“Hey, wait!” The guy said. I turned around and released the breath I had been holding in. “Uhh, do I know you?” He asked and walked closer to me. His wings were red and his eye color too. He was very handsome.
“Nope, you don’t.” A simple answer. “I’ll just leave you guys alone hehe.” I said and was almost about to go when he stopped me.
“Are you new here? We know almost everyone who’s our age in this town but I don’t think I’ve seen you before.” The last part he said carefully.
“I’m just here to visit a family member.” I said. I really wanted to leave. The feeling inside me was getting really strong. It was scaring me. The other kids came closer to us and the feeling grew stronger. I didn’t want to look at the others or I’d feel as if the butterflies would start to travel up my mind too.
“Ooo I like your color!” One girl said. She was a light pink fairy. She sounded very social and happy. I gave her a smile of appreciation.
“What’s your name?” Another guy said, he stood behind the one I had been talking to before. Why do I feel this way? I’m must be going crazy.
I tried to look behind the red fairy and the guy who asked me my name walked into view. He was staring at me with sparkly green eyes, his wings glittered a bit as the light hit them. I froze. Now the butterflies tickled every part of my body but in a warm kind of way. I felt heat travel up my cheeks.
“Aria.” I was completely mesmerized by him. He was gorgeous. More than that. I couldn’t breathe normally. Felt like my heart was about to explode. His expression was frozen too like he didn’t know what to say next. Then I saw his wings glow green and his eyes too, like turning on a lamp and its light increases slowly. His color started becoming bright. Then his facial expression became calm and he smiled as if he had just realized something. It felt like someone had just shot an arrow into my heart. His smile was almost too much for me to handle. I blinked and swallowed but I was still frozen in place. My feelings were all over my body and I was a little scared but at the same time, looking at him made me feel calm and safe. As if nothing in this whole wide world could harm me.
“OH MY GOSH!!” Someone shrieked. But it wasn’t enough to draw my eyes away from this magical being.
“I can’t believe it.” Someone said, his tone happy.
“I’m Eric.” The guy I couldn’t stop staring at said. I was brought back from the trance for his voice had shocked me. Even his voice was almost too hot for me to bear! Suddenly I couldn’t feel my right leg and I lost balance. The red fairy caught my shoulder and I stood up fast. I noticed that Eric showed a little reaction before I was caught. I had seen purple light behind me and I then realized, I was glowing too! Just like Eric! Both of us were glowing like crazy. Now I was getting really scared and really confused.
“What’s happening to me?” I said with a hint of panic in my voice as I tried grabbing my left wing to somehow try and find a way to turn it off. Then I looked at the others, the red fairy chuckled at my reaction to whatever this was. None of them were glowing like Eric and I.
“I’m so happy for you!” The light pink fairy said and ran into me for a hug. She then let go. “You’re so beautiful.”
I didn’t dare ask them what was going on because it looked like from their reaction that this was something good and something that happens a few times. I didn’t want them to think that I was a fairy who doesn’t know the basics, in case this was something that every fairy should know.
“Go to him!” The red fairy said who was now gently pushing me towards Eric. I was hesitant but Eric just walked steadily and slowly towards me. I decided to smile at him and for a moment he stopped in his tracks, then his face beamed with joy and he came really close really fast. He stopped right in front of me. The air was a little electric between us and the pull was so strong, I just wanted to give in to him and fall right into his arm. But my mind knew better. He was still a stranger and I had no idea what was happening.
Pull yourself together, Aria!
He held up his hand and our eyes locked again. I put my hand in his. I felt warm electricity go from our hands and into my body like a wave as he intertwined our fingers together. Then a few seconds later his glow faded and he was back to normal. I looked up behind me to see if I still glowed but it looked like I was back to normal too.
Our hands were still together and I had no plans of letting go yet.
“Where do you come from?” I heard a voice say. I looked to the side where another red fairy stood, but she was a girl with a ponytail. Her energy felt more serious than the others. I heard Eric chuckle. How is he so perfect?
“I- uh…” I had no idea how to answer that question. I didn’t know any names of other places than this. Amare and Ekon only told me that this kingdom was called The Kingdom of Light. I should’ve been more curious about this world. I had been so busy thinking about my mom.
“We can ask her that later, just look at her. She’s still recovering after the encounter.” The light pink fairy said. “By the way, my name is Molly.” She said with a smile. “She’s Ruby.” She said and pointed at the red fairy with the ponytail.
“I’m Axel.” The other red fairy said and greeted me with a smile.
“My name’s Aiden.” Another male fairy said behind Eric. I couldn’t see him so I stood up on my toes to see over Eric’s shoulder. Aiden must’ve seen that so he walked a bit closer and waved. His wings were orange. I smiled at him.
“This was sudden, don’t you think?” Eric asked, sounded a bit shy but damn I wasn’t even sure if I could answer him without melting.
“Yeah.” I said shyly. Get it together!
“I guess you felt my presence, that’s why you’re here. I did feel something too right before you showed up.” He said but I was busy holding myself together. Oh, so that’s why I came to them in the first place, it was Eric whom I was drawn to. But why was I drawn to him still remained a mystery to me.
This was something completely new for me, feeling this way and so intensely. I’m not sure humans can feel like this. “But you said you were meeting your family?” He asked.
“Yes, I’m looking for her house actually.” I finally, kind of, came to my senses and managed to say something.
“What’s her name?” He asked softly. Pfft stoopp…why does he do this to me?
“Clarissa.” I said trying to remain calm. Was he feeling the same way towards me or did he practice for this? Am I just going crazy?
“Wait, is she like really light blue?” Molly asked.
“Crystal blue.” Ruby stated.
I nodded.
“You’re her niece or?” Axel asked and I nodded again.
“I didn’t know her family visited her.” I heard Aiden say. Axel had the ball in his hand and threw it to him.
“But then again, we don’t really know anything about her.” Axel said and Aiden caught the ball.
“Let’s go.” Aiden said and he started walking out towards the street.
“Yes sir!” Molly said saluting to him playfully, then she marched after him. Ruby and Axel followed. Leaving Eric and I. I watched them leave.
“Are you okay?” He asked me. I turned and smiled. I had no idea why he was so calm.
“Yeah of course. I’m great! It’s just that I wasn’t expecting this. I’m still digesting whatever happened.”
“Yeah, the mating bond can happen really unexpectedly.” He said with a smile that melted my heart and he led me out of the garden still holding my hand.
The mating bond?
What was that?
