The Headache

Dylan, Kylie, and Hailey were already there, standing in the field together. “Hey, Aria!” Hailey called as I walked onto the field. I jogged my way to them. The coach wasn’t here yet so we just stood all there and chatted. “I tried to call you last night, where were you?” she continued. “I’m sorry, I was at Liam’s. My phone died because I didn’t charge it last night.” “Oh yeah, I forgot you were at Liam's. Why didn’t you charge it though?” “Because I just fell asleep while watching a movie with Liam.” I said and laughed a bit at that. “Yeah, his movie taste suucks.” Dylan laughed. I just shook my head and smirked at him. “Oop, you fell asleep at Liam’s?” Kylie asked. “Yeah, like I haven’t done that before.” I said sarcastically. “Yeah, I know I know, just waiting for the ‘moment’.” She said to me smirking. “Well, my mom gave us condoms last night. So, that’s new.” Liam said behind me while walking towards us. PE was the only class we all had together. They all laughed. “Why did you have to mention that?” I asked. “We wanted to know!” Kylie said. Liam hugged me from behind as he came. He always did that when we were talking about us. Then he stood beside me with one arm on my shoulder. Hailey sighed. “Really?” she said disappointingly “You two look SO good together. You even act like a couple. I just don’t understand your “best friend” relationship.” “Nobody does.” Dylan said. Then the coach was here and we started jogging. “We COULD be together. That’s not the problem. I do care about him a lot. He might even be my soulmate” I said and Liam put one hand at his heart and looked at me with his puppy eyes and I then pushed his face away. “...but as a friend. He’s like the best brother ever but in a not-related way.” I continued. The headache was worse. It was getting irritating. “Same here but as a not-related sister of course.” Liam said. “So sad.” Hailey said. “Now the energy around you two has changed after that brother and sister talk.” Dylan said and laughed. “Not related in any way though.” Liam stated. “NO MORE TALKING AND MORE RUNNING!” the coach yelled at us and we ran... More like away from the coach. We had to run 5 circles around the field. Liam and I were the fastest ones in this class. Dylan too but he never left Hiley behind. I was running beside Liam. Then I saw him go faster than me so I sped up. He saw that and smiled. “So you wanna play that game?” he said and went faster than me. I laughed and ran faster. I could still feel the headache but it had faded a lot. I guess running helped. I caught up with him and now we were running as fast as we could side by side. Then we had finished 3 circles already when I started to slow down. He had better stamina than me. He noticed and slowed down with me. “Giving up already?” he asked and I stopped. Then the headache had gotten a lot worse than it was before. Liam stopped a bit further away from me. The coach walked to us.  “You two.” he said and pointed at us. “We’re going to have a little chat.” Liam walked to me all sweaty. I was all sweaty too and breathing hard. I loved this kind of exercise. Made me feel strong. But my stamina wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be. We followed the coach away from the others. “What is it, coach?” Liam asked. “You two are the fastest and most competitive in this class. I would like you two to demonstrate for the others what competition really looks like.” Liam and I looked at each other like we were deciding together with our eyes instead for words. Then we both smiled which confirmed the answer. “Sure.” I said and the coach was happy with that response. We went back to the crowd and a few kids had already finished 5 circles. Kylie, Dylan, and Hailey gave us the question mark for why we had to talk to the coach. Liam gave them the signal to wait and then: “QUIET!” the coach yelled. Everyone was startled, even us. “We’re going to have a little demonstration of competition today which is what we’re going to be practicing. The competitive spirit in you needs to be released! Which is what mister Liam and miss Aria will be showing us today.” Liam and I stepped forward. I couldn’t wait to start running again just to get rid of the headache. “They will run from this line and to the other line at the end of the field and back again.” The coach continued. We went to the starting line together. I couldn’t wait any longer, the headache was killing me so I just jumped a bit to start moving and I felt like the headache was making me mad. WHY WILL IT NOT GO AWAY? I thought to myself. I just stopped jumping and tried to calm myself. Everything's okay. This will go as soon as you start running, just be ready. I was focused. “Why is your face so serious?” Liam suddenly said. “What do you mean?” “I mean your face. It’s so serious. You’re not gonna kill me or something if I win are you?” he laughed. “Well, I don’t know.” I said teasingly but I could feel the heat raging inside me. I was mad at him for talking to me for some reason. What is he so happy about? “Are you ready?” the coach said. Liam and I went into positions.  “Set.” everyone was looking at us. We were both ready. “GO!” and the whistle went out and Liam and I start running as fast as we could. It was a big green field so it was going to take some time running back too. We were at the same speed. Until he got a bit faster, but I didn’t want him to win. I wanted to win. I am going to win this. Suddenly my sight got better. It was good before but now it was very good. Amazing actually. I felt powerful, stronger, and faster. Like I was flying. I went past Liam. I looked and smirked at him as I went by but he didn’t smile back. Jealous. I thought. But I wasn’t sure. His face showed worry. I was about to turn around to run back but he suddenly ran towards me without slowing down and he bumped into me with force. Intentionally. I wasn’t in the mood for games, Liam isn’t stupid enough to bump into me in a competition so now I was mad. I fell down on the ground with him on top of me and I tried to push him off. “Stop it! Your eyes, they’re glowing.” he whispered at me. “No, they’re not. You just don’t want me to win!” I whispered back. “What’s going on with you?” he asked with much confusion and worry in his expression. “Nothing!” I stopped struggling, then he calmed down, and as he did so did I. “Trust me, okay?” he then said but I didn’t have time to answer. “Are you two okay?” the coach asked as he came to us. “Uh, Aria got hurt. I’m going to get her to the infirmary.” Liam said and looked back at me in hoping I’d play along. “Thanks, Liam.” I said annoyed and we got up. I held onto my arm that was suppose to be “hurt” and Liam stood between me and the coach to hide my eyes. “Alright. Well, as you can see when you’re competitive things can get a little ugly.” We heard the coach say to the others as we walked out. We went to the boy’s locker room. “Why do we have to be in here?” I asked as I sat down on a bench. “It smells bad in here.” “I don’t want to get caught in the girl’s locker room.” “I see, so it’s better if I’d get caught here?” “I think so yeah.” He sat down beside me. “Let me see.” He turned my face to him and looked into my eyes. “They aren’t glowing anymore.” “Mm.” I said and took his hand away. “What’s wrong with you. Why are you so angry?” he asked irritated. Why was I so angry? I don’t know, what’s wrong with me? Am I going crazy? I’m never like this. “You’re never like this.” he continued. I was silent. The headache was fading. I was getting calmer. I was ashamed. I’ve never acted like this before and never towards Liam. I was too ashamed to answer. I just looked down on the floor and didn’t want to face him. What’s going on with me? “Aria, please say something.” he said calmly and put one hand on my back for comfort. “I don’t know..” I said. “I don’t know what’s going on with me. The headache came back and I just got mad.” I turned to him. “I’m sorry that I put it all on you. I must be going crazy.” He just smiled sweetly and then hugged me. “Don’t worry, I’m not mad at you or anything. I was just surprised.” he let me go. “I’ll give you another pain killer. It seemed to have worked last night.” He stood up and I stood up with him and hugged him with my arms around his neck. “That’s a random hug.” he said and hugged me back. “Are you sure you’re okay?” “Just in case I get mad at you again I want you to know that...Hmm...I guess that...I’m never actually mad at you.” I said and he laughed. “But something else happened.” He suddenly said and I let my arms rest on his shoulders. He still held onto my waist, it felt so warm and safe to be in his arms. “What?” “When you ran past me, your eyes not only glowed but you also had something on your back. Like- I don’t know. Transparent wings? Because your feet didn’t touch the-” “I knew it!” we suddenly heard and looked in the direction of the sound. “What?” another voice said. “Look at this!” “Well hello, love birds.” “I knew they didn’t go to the nurse.” Hailey smirked. “I’ll tell you later.” Liam whispered to me. Oh no, what was he going to say? We looked back. Hailey, Kylie, and Dylan had found us and at the perfect moment. We let go of each other. The headache was gone. Hailey runs to me and gives me the tell-me-everything look and hugs me for some reason. Liam understood it. “She has a bad headache and was putting all her anger on me and she was just apologizing. Which reminds me.” He turns to his locker and finds his bag. “Liam I don’t need it anymore. The headache is gone.” He stops and looks at me. “Maybe not now but if it comes back then you have this with you. Just in case.” and he handed me a few pills. We girls went back to our locker rooms to shower. “Are you positively sure that you two aren’t in love?” Kylie asks as she puts shampoo in her palm and smiles dreamingly at the idea. “I already told you. You both already know the answer to that. I love him as my best friend.” “Such a shame.” Hailey says as she lets the water run down her face. What was Liam about to say? That I had wings and flew forward while running? Is he crazy? Would I believe it?
