School was finally over. I couldn’t wait to get home. I wanted to tell Ekon and Amare everything.
“Hey!” Kylie said out of breath suddenly beside me. “Why are you walking so fast?”
“Were you just running after me?” I asked.
“Isn’t that obvious?” she said still trying to catch her breath so I slowed down for her sake.
“I guess so. I wanted to talk to Ekon and Amare about something.” I said. I think it would be safe to tell Kylie my secret. She is my best friend after all. Should I?
“Oh, can I come? Because I don’t want to go home right now and I need something to talk about to calm down my anger.” She said clearly annoyed about something.
“Why are you angry?” I asked her, but my mind was distracted by my own thoughts about how I should tell Amare and Ekon about what’s happening.
“Oh, it’s Jack. He’s just being himself. It’s annoying.” Jack, her twin brother.
“Aren’t all brothers like that?” I asked even though I couldn’t really say. I’ve just kind of learned over time that siblings usually find each other really annoying.
“I guess so. I’m just going to stay away from him for a few hours.”
“Can I know what he did?”
“You don’t wanna know.” She said and I laughed.
“Was he in the same class as you?” I asked because I had the feeling.
“Can you believe it? In the same class together with my brother. Ugh.” she said and looked away as if remembering something she didn’t want to.
“I’m sorry?” I smiled.
“Hey, Aria wait!” I heard someone say and I looked back. Liam was on his way over. I waited for him.
“Oop, were you going to meet Liam after school or something?” Kylie asked. I shook my head. Oh yes, he wanted to say something to me before.
He came over to us and we all three started walking together.
“Was there anything you needed from me?” I asked.
“Well, there was something but I just forgot.” He said as he pointed with his eyes to Kylie when she wasn’t looking. He wasn’t sure if I wanted him to say anything while Kylie was there because this was supposed to be a secret. But Kylie is also my best friend so it isn’t fair if only Liam knows. I want to tell her. I smiled at him and nodded.
“Hey, Kylie.” I said and she turned around from her thoughts and to me. “Something very weird happened to me last night.” I continued.
“For me too but mostly for her..yes.” Liam added. She looked at him and then at me and made a smiling duck face.
“Yeah, but I was the one who changed.” I said casually to Liam.
“Mhmm...and you two spent the night together. I think I know where you’re going with this. I think I know what has changed about you.” She said pretty confidently. Liam and I looked at each other confused.
“Okay, what is it?” I asked. She laughed.
“You lost your v-card! I know Liam has already lost his.” She said happily. “I knew something had changed between you two. The energy had been different since yesterday. More secretive and you two are a lot closer, whispering and stuff. I already knew something was happening and now you two finally announced it!” She continued and hugged us both half jumping in happiness. “Congratulations! I love you both and I’m so happy for you!”
I was not expecting this and by Liam’s expression, he wasn’t either. It wasn’t awkward or anything just wasn’t expecting her to say this even though that was something she would’ve said.
Liam burst into laughter which made me laugh too.
“Aria? Losing her v-card? Really? With me? You must be crazy. That didn’t happen last night.” He said still laughing.
Now it was Kylie’s turn to be confused. “Oh.” She said unhappy and folded her arms. “Then what is it?”
“Her eyes glow.” Liam said and stood beside her and she looked at him confused.
“What?” she said. I smiled.
“He´s telling the truth.” I said and walked past them not wanting to make a big deal of it.
“Yeah, sure. Then why aren't they glowing now?” Kylie asked while both of them hurried after me.
“It only happens sometimes. Like in PE today.” Liam said for me.
“When did that happen in PE?” She answered in disbelieve.
“When I told the coach that she needed to go to the nurse.”
“Really? You know I want to believe stuff like that but if you’re playing with me I will get hurt and disappointed. Because glowing eyes isn’t normal I think.” She said.
“We’re telling the truth. Every time I get that headache my eyes glow. It hurts so much.” I told her and we continued walking. “Maybe you’ll see it happen today.”
She just nodded and said, “Yeah, maybe.”
“Didn’t you have something to say to me before?” I asked Liam as we continued walking to my house.
“Yeah, at PE. Not only your eyes glowed but you weren’t really touching the ground either. Like you were flying right above it, but not very noticeably or everyone else would’ve seen it too.” he said and Kylie looks at him shocked.
“Did you see wings? Because before you talked about transparent wings I think.” I asked, it was hard to believe the things that were happening to me.
“Yeah I thought I might’ve seen wings but it was hard to make out.” he answered.
“What the heck is happening…” we heard Kylie say under her breath.
“I’m home!” I called as I opened the door to my house. I let Kylie and Liam in. It smelled like fresh cookies inside. I guess Amare was baking again. She loved baking and I loved eating whatever she made.
“Aria, come to the kitchen and taste those for me.” Amare called from the kitchen. We walked over and she turned around with a bit plate full of chocolate cookies that smelled amazing. She was surprised to see Kylie and Liam. “Oh hey kids, have some and tell me what you think of them. It’s a new recipe.”
We took one each, then we took more until we just started eating them all, and then Amare got her answer. “Okay but don’t eat all of them. I want to give some to the orphanage.” She said and took the plate away from us. I looked at Liam and Kylie and they knew what I was about to ask Amare.
“Hey mom?” I said. She turned around to look at me. She had already put a plastic film over the cookies.
“What’s wrong?” she asked when she noticed the expression on my face.
“I think something is wrong with me.”
“Nothing can ever be wrong with you. Whatever it is that’s troubling you, we can figure it out.” she said and smiled a warm and loving smile to me.
“My eyes are glowing purple.” I said.
“You have purple in your eyes. It just pops out more when the light hits it. Nothing we haven’t seen before.”
“No I know but they glow in the dark now.”
“And she has transparent wings.” Liam said in a hurry as if he really wanted to be the one to tell her that.
Amare was quiet.
“Mom?” I asked walking closer to her.
“Did we break her with your craziness?” Kylie asked worriedly. She walked with me to her side and poked her arm. That’s when Amare suddenly blinked and then I could see the worry in her eyes.
“Ekon come here!” Amare called out.
“Wait, I’m reading something interesting in the paper, wait a few minutes!” Ekon said from the living room.
“It’s happening!” Amare said as her fingers ran through her hair.
“What’s happening?” Ekon called back.
“She knows!”
Silence.
Then footsteps from the living room and Ekon appeared in the kitchen looking at me. I couldn’t decipher his emotions from his face. It looked empty.
“So it’s happening. Why what’s triggering it?” Ekon asked as his eyes moved to Amare but she just shook her head not knowing the answer to that question.
“Triggering what? What’s happening to me?” I asked with impatience and worry that something bad might be going on.
“We hoped we wouldn’t have to tell you this even though we should have a long time ago. It’s just because we know you’d then see us as mentally unstable, crazy, or something. That’s why we didn’t want to tell you unless it would happen. Unless we needed to.” Amare said and Ekon put one hand on her shoulder with a serious expression. I was getting scared. I looked over to Kylie and Liam and they looked at me back, not sure of what was happening.
“What is it?!” I asked feeling myself panic a bit.
“Please believe us, sweetie. You aren’t just human. You’re also half fairy.” Ekon stated with seriousness in his voice. Okay, what? Uh so like what? I had no idea how I was supposed to digest these words.
Then suddenly I heard Kylie burst out laughing, struggling to hold it in. She sounded as if she were choking on her own laughter. Everyone looked at her. Amare put her fingers on her temples and rubbed them.
“See Ekon? How are they going to believe us?” she whispered to him desperately.
“Kylie, why are you laughing?” Ekon asked as if he couldn’t see the reason why.
“I really, really want to believe what you just said. I am a believer you know. But hearing someone, especially an adult say something like that so seriously in real life is just so unusual! How is that not making you laugh?” she asked us all with her hands on her hips.
“No, it was funny. But I didn’t want to hurt no one’s feelings.” Liam whispered the last part to her even though everyone was listening.
“I think I need more than just words to believe that I’m half fairy.” I said to my foster parents and crossed my arms. “I know I’m changing in weird ways. That’s why I kind of believe you. But being a fairy? I don’t know if that’s what I’m actually changing into or not.” I continued. Amare and Ekon look at each other and Ekon nods. He walks out of the kitchen.
“We actually have a picture of your parents. You have seen a picture of your father before. But we couldn’t show you the pictures we have of your mother because she was always in her fairy form. We wanted to protect you so you couldn’t know of your fairy side.” Amare explains while we waited for Ekon. I had seen a picture of my biological father before, a picture of him when he graduated. They had told me they didn’t have pictures of my biological mother.
“Her fairy form? Protect me from what?” I asked getting a bit confused by her words.
“Fairies can hide their identities and look like humans as long as other fairies aren’t close by. If two fairies are close by then it becomes difficult to hide their true fairy self. When fairies turn 16 to 18 years old they learn how to change into a human and they come to this dimensions to study us and our earth. They stay with us as transfer students at schools or something alike, saying they’re from another county or something. Your mother changed into a human at 17 years old because she needed to go to earth and that’s where she met Ario, your father, her mate. She felt the mate bond right away and your father took a great liking to her. They became close really fast and were together for a few years in secret.” She said and Ekon came back with a huge photo album. He opened it and started turning pages.
“Why in secret?” Kylie suddenly asked noticing my frozen expression. I felt Liam’s arm rest on my shoulders pulling me close to him for support.
“Fairies and humans are forbidden to connect in deep levels. Cannot go to the human realm without permission from the royal Fairies and humans cannot know about their existence. Those are the three main fairy rules, and your mother broke all of them. Then she also had you, a half human and half fairy being. Totally forbidden. When the royal family discovered what your mother had been doing they made her suffer the consequences. She was banned from the human realm and I heard that it means she cannot step through the portal, there’s like an invisible wall in the way.”
This was a lot to take in. I wasn’t sure if I could take all that in. I was speechless and there was total silence in the kitchen now. Until Ekon...
“Finally. Yes, here she is. Clarissa. Look at her. That’s your real mother.” He said and turned the album to me. I looked at the picture he pointed to. Kylie and Liam were right behind me looking at the photo with me. She was so beautiful. She had wings with crystal blue outlining on her wings that glowed a bit and her eyes were crystal blue as well. Her father was in the picture too, holding my mom, catching her as she was jumping towards him to what seemed as a hug. So, this is real?
“She does kind of look like you, except for your hair color. Your mom is blonde. So beautiful. I guess you take the darker colors from your dad.” Kylie says breaking the silence. The truth didn’t seem to affect her as much as it did me or Liam. But she is a believer after all I guess.
“So they didn’t die in a drowning accident?” I asked. I didn’t know what to think. I wasn’t mad at them for not telling me. But I wanted to be angry for some reason but I wasn’t. I let Liam’s arm fall off of me and I closed the album because I didn’t want to look at the picture anymore.
“No, sweetie. Because your parents broke so many rules they had to suffer the consequences. Your mom was banished and can never come back here or she would’ve already come by just to see you. But the royal family ordered for your father to be killed and put a spell on your mom to be unable to kill herself so that she would suffer more.” Ekon said and reach out his sturdy hand to me. I took it without thinking and I was unexpectedly pulled into a hug. They what? I heard Kylie gasp and Liam turned away with one hand in his hair. Usually meant that he felt distressed.
“I’m sorry dear.” Amare said and hugged us both. She had tears forming in her eyes.
“How could they do that to my parents? That’s such a cruel thing to do.” I said more to myself than to them. I felt tears flowing down my cheeks and I hugged my foster parents harder. I may not have known my parents but I always felt connected to them. Hearing that something like this happened to my family made me feel angry and upset. Then I felt Liam hug our little group hug and Kylie in his footsteps. Then it hit me. But what about me?
I loosened my grip from the hug, looked up, and asked: “But what about me? Why am I okay and well?” Everyone let go of each other, except Liam held onto my arm which I really needed.
“No one knew you existed. You were so little and your parents kept you a secret, as we were always with Ario, a trio before your mother came, they made us your godparents. But then their house was attacked the day you were with us out for a stroll to get some ice cream. When we got back, no one was there. Your parents had seen this coming and kept all your toys at our house just in case so no one would figure out that you were actually their baby. But when we came back, both of them were gone. We figured what had happened when we saw your dad on the floor.” Ekon stopped as he struggled to hold in his tears. Amare put her hand on his shoulder and continued for him.
“We grieved for many days. But at least you were safe and we knew that was what your parents wanted.”
How could they do this to my parents? What kind of torture is this? My mom is still alive. I need to see her. I felt angry, upset, determined. I wanted to go see my mother.
