Chapter 1: Home
The soft hum of the aircraft filled the cabin as it cut through the morning sky. Beyond the oval window, clouds stretched endlessly beneath the wings, glowing gold under the rising sun.
Ethan Harrison rested his forehead lightly against the glass.
Ten years.
It had been ten years since he had last seen the land waiting beyond those clouds.
Beside him, Aurora Benson closed the novel she had been reading and smiled.
"You've been staring out that window for almost twenty minutes."
Without looking away, Ethan smiled faintly. "Have I?"
"You have."
She leaned her head against his shoulder.
"Nervous?"
He let out a quiet laugh.
"A little."
"I thought successful lawyers weren't supposed to get nervous."
"They're not."
She looked up at him with amusement.
"So what happened?"
"I'm not in court today."
Aurora laughed softly, the sound drawing a warm smile from Ethan.
Five years together, and she still had a way of making even silence feel comfortable.
The flight attendant approached with practiced courtesy.
"Good morning. We'll begin our descent into Valoria in approximately thirty minutes. Is there anything else I can get for either of you?"
"No, thank you," Ethan replied.
Aurora smiled politely. "We're fine, thank you."
The attendant nodded before continuing down the aisle.
Aurora stretched slightly before turning back to Ethan.
"I still can't believe we're finally going home."
"Neither can I."
"You know..." she said thoughtfully, "when we first met at university, I never imagined we'd be sitting on a plane like this."
Ethan chuckled.
"I remember someone spilling coffee on my casebook."
Aurora gasped dramatically.
"It was an accident."
"It ruined three pages."
"I bought you a new one."
"After arguing for fifteen minutes that it wasn't your fault."
She folded her arms.
"It wasn't."
He raised an eyebrow.
"You walked into me."
"You changed direction."
"You weren't looking."
"You were reading while walking."
"I was thinking."
"You were distracted."
Aurora laughed and gently nudged his arm.
"I still won that argument."
"You absolutely did not."
"Oh, I did."
"You simply refused to admit defeat."
"I prefer the term... persistent."
He shook his head, smiling.
"And that's why I fell in love with you."
Her teasing expression softened.
"I thought it was because I'm brilliant."
"That too."
"And beautiful?"
"Obviously."
"And kind?"
"Without question."
She grinned.
"So... basically everything."
Ethan laughed.
"I walked right into that."
"You did."
She reached for his hand, intertwining her fingers with his.
For a few moments, neither of them spoke.
Comfortable silence settled between them.
Aurora broke it first.
"Are you excited?"
"For the wedding?"
"For everything."
He looked at her.
"Starting our lives back home."
His eyes softened.
"I've been looking forward to it."
"So have I."
She rested her head against his shoulder again.
"My parents have probably planned a month's worth of family dinners already."
Ethan smiled.
"That sounds like your mother."
"And my father will pretend he had nothing to do with it."
"He'll fail."
"He always does."
They both laughed.
Aurora looked out of the window.
"I've missed Valoria."
"So have I."
"I've missed the food."
"I knew that would be your first answer."
"You say that like it's a bad thing."
"I'm saying I already know our first stop after we unpack."
She smiled mischievously.
"You do?"
"Your favourite restaurant."
She blinked.
"You remembered?"
"I remember everything that matters."
Her smile lingered a little longer.
"You're making it very difficult not to marry you immediately."
"I thought we already agreed to wait."
"We did."
"But waiting is hard."
"It'll be worth it."
She squeezed his hand.
"I know."
A gentle chime sounded through the cabin.
The captain's voice came over the speakers.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have begun our descent into Valoria. Cabin crew, please prepare the cabin for landing."
Passengers around them began raising their window shades.
Some reached for their belongings.
Others looked outside with quiet anticipation.
Ethan slowly turned his gaze back to the window.
The blanket of clouds began to break apart.
Below them lay the coastline.
Beyond it...
Valoria.
The city grew clearer with every passing second.
Familiar streets.
Towering buildings.
The place where he had laughed as a child.
The place where he had lost everything.
Aurora noticed the change in his expression.
She gently tightened her grip on his hand.
"Welcome home."
Ethan kept his eyes on the city below.
A faint smile touched his lips.
"So much has changed..."
He paused.
"But some promises never do."
Aurora looked at him curiously, thinking he was simply reflecting on how long he had been away.
She smiled and rested her head against his shoulder once more.
Ethan looked through the window one last time.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"I'm home."
The aircraft descended toward Valoria.
And toward a truth that had waited ten years for his return.
