ELYSE
“Isn't it time to wake up, Comet bearer?” I felt a voice speaking inside of my head and my lashes fluttered open in haste.
Water trickled down my face and I tried to stand when I realized extra weight was added on both of my hands. On my right, my hand was stuck in the mud where I laid and in the other— I was holding onto Ollie.
I disentangled my fingers with Ollie and then dragged my hands out of the mud and my hands instinctively went to my stomach immediately.
Am I not supposed to be dead? I was stabbed right? Yes, Lucas did stab me. I'm sure of that.
“Eyes up here, lady. I have all millennium but I wouldn't love to spend it on you.” My eyes snapped towards the voice and I saw a woman seated on the branch of a tree looking like she was blending in with the moon above her.
The sounds of birds chirping and trees swaying made me realize that I wasn't dreaming, this was really happening.
“Who are you?” I asked with squinted eyes while Lucas sadistic face after he stabbed I and Ollie replayed in my head multiple times.
“You called out to me in your final moments and yet, you do not know who I am?” She questioned rolling her eyes as she fell from the branch yet managed to land on both feet so gracefully.
“I'm confused. And why is she not waking up?” I pointed to Ollie scrambling over her and nudged her a bit but she seemed lifeless.
“I'm the goddess and you're in the boundary between the living and the dead. You're only able to be awake here because you're a comet bearer, it isn't the same fate for your best friend here.” The more she spoke, the more I felt like my head was spiralling and all this was just a figment of my own imagination.
“It is not a figment of your imagination. You did call out to me and I want to know why, else you can continue your journey to the great beyond.” She smirked, gesturing towards a thick fog in the opposite direction and I stared at it for a while before turning to stare back at her with a determined expression.
“What I want…” I trailed off wondering if what I was asking was even possible, “What I want is for you to send us both back to earth to get our revenge. We were killed unjustly and—” She raised a hand in authority and I paused while she shrugged.
“You didn't even ask for one life to return but both? What do I look like? The one that created your universe? I'm just in charge, a mere caretaker.” She snapped and I rubbed my wrist together.
“I've read tales, myths of you giving some second chance. Surely you can do the same for the both of us.” She stared thoughtfully at I and my best friend before shaking her head in negativity.
“There's no chance I'm doing that for you both.” She began walking away, each of her steps majestic and graceful.
“Every 1000 years, a comet bearer is born. A comet bearer is also a guardian wolf that keeps the peace and I am a comet bearer. Instead of the usual gap of 1000 years, my mum who was also a comet bearer passed hers on to me. If you let me die, there is no chance another comet bearer would be birthed in the space of a thousand or two thousand years.” I reminded and she halted in her steps, turning to stare at me.
“Please, I'm begging you to do this for us. We were wronged and we need to return the favor.” Her face was serious and rigid as her jaw tightened.
“Nice try. I'm only sending you back because you're a comet bearer and have a future to fulfill. Your best friend only got lucky because I'm in a good mood.” She nodded and I smiled as I thought of all the ways I would repay Lucas for his treachery.
“Thank—”
“That's enough already. Go now.” She interrupted and that feeling that runs through your vein when you were pushed off a cliff was the exact rush in me before absolute silence descended and I woke up with a gasp.
I stared around and I was back in my room at my pack and my door unlocked almost immediately.
“You've overslept. You're supposed to go hunting with Ollie today, aren't you?” My eyes snapped to my aunt in the doorway and I jumped out of the bed, running to engulf her in a soft embrace.
“I love you so much, aunt.” I whispered, sniffling to stop the tears from running out of my eyes.
“I love you too, princess but this is odd.” She chuckled before we disentangled.
I stared at the calendar but was confused when I realized the date was 18th December 2022. No wait, that's not right.
We're supposed to be in 2024!
“Aunt, what's today's date? What year are we in?” I rasped out and she stared at me suspiciously like I was acting like someone loosing her mind.
“Oh don't tell me you forgot, Ollie is going to be so mad. It's 18th December, 2022 and you're supposed to go hunting with her today.” She answered slowly and I frowned.
What's going on?
I finally threw on my clothes and rushed outside only to see Ollie walking away and I chased after her.
“Ollie, I'm here.” I yelled waving my hands and she paused before glaring at me.
“You know I don't like you, and goddess be so Kind, I can never so why are you bugging me? Can't you just tell your parents you don't want to hang out with me? I'm so fed up already.” She yelled, throwing her sling shot at me before walking away.
“Ollie..” I trailed off utterly confused when Athena appeared from nowhere and dragged me by the hand while sprinting into the woods.
“What the hell is wrong with you? You snake!” I managed to wiggle my wrist out of her grasp and she sighed, pushing her hair out of her face.
“It's me, Ollie.” She answered straightforwardly and I squinted my eyes in confusion.
“Athena, stop it, you evil witch. You know I wonder how black your soul really is and I'm just so stunned. Ollie is right there, returning back to her house. Stop staring at me like you like me, the pretense doesnt suit you.” I snapped at her and she sighed, sitting down on the brambles.
“Dear goddess! How can you not recognize your best friend when you see her? This is so annoying and now I'm frustrated.” She sulked ruffling her hair a bit and I took a few steps backward.
“Get the hell out of my sight, you wench.” I screamed, clenching my fist as I decided within me, if she tried touching me again, I wouldn't hesitate to give her a black eye.
“I don't even know how else to explain this to you, okay? I'm still spiralling as well, so don't make it harder for me than it already is.” She said, taking her lips as her brows twitched.
“We died together. I heard your conversation with the goddess but somehow I couldn't stand up. It's surprising how I woke up and found out that I'm in your step sister's body.” I stared at her in confusion as it seemed like my brain was splitting into two.
“I can't handle this.” I said feeling my body slumping to the ground and my eyes closed as she caught me before I hit the ground.
