CHAPTER FIVE

778 Words
As I sipped my coffee, Alina slipped a paper under my pan, her eyes locked on mine. I unfolded it, and my heart skipped a beat as I read the scribbled message: "Pope is protected by someone in the police department. I overheard him talking to Officer NoNo." My mind racing, I remembered Nomanis, my old foe who had a grudge against me. The pieces were falling into place. Tweeny, finishing his meal, glanced at me with unease. "Sir Kelvin, we have to leave now." He nodded towards a woman in a nice gown, who was watching us with an intensity that made my skin crawl. Two men, lurking behind her, seemed to be waiting for a signal to pounce. We quickly paid the bill and made a hasty exit, but our pursuers were hot on our heels. We dodged and weaved through the crowded streets, finally hiding beside a van to shake them off. "That was a close hit," Tweeny whispered, his eyes blazing with determination and a hint of madness. As we caught our breath, Tweeny turned to me with a resolute look. "We have to protect Miss Alina. Her life is in danger." I nodded in agreement, and we quickly made arrangements to send her to my house in Norttenbrok, where I knew she would be safe. But as we parted ways, I couldn't shake off the feeling that we were being watched. The shadows seemed to move of their own accord, and I sensed that Pope's reach was far greater than we had imagined. What secrets lay hidden in Norttenbrok? And who could we trust? The answers, much like Alina's safety, hung precariously in the balance. As I entered my room, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over me. The events of the day had been overwhelming, and I was grateful to have made it back to the safety of my home. Merian, my loyal servant, was waiting for me in my room, a warm smile on her face. "Sir Kelvin, I'm glad you're safe," she said, as she helped me remove my coat. I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards her. "Thank you, Merian. I don't know what I would do without you." As I changed into more comfortable clothes, I couldn't shake off the feeling that we were being watched. I looked around the room, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Merian seemed to sense my unease. "Sir Kelvin, is everything okay?" she asked, her voice laced with concern. I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. "I think we're in grave danger, Merian. Pope's reach is far greater than we imagined." Merian's expression turned serious. "I'll make sure to increase security around the house," she said. "But Sir Kelvin, you need to be careful too. You're not invincible." I nodded, knowing she was right. I couldn't let my guard down, not now, not ever. As I settled into my bed, I couldn't help but think of Alina, and the danger she was in. I knew I had to protect her, no matter what. But as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't shake off the feeling that we were running out of time. As I sipped my green tea, I listened intently to the radios, my eyes scanning the old newspaper article in front of me. The headline read: "Pope Francis Accused of Murdering First Wife". I felt a surge of adrenaline as I read the details, my mind racing with connections to the current case. Merian sat beside me, her eyes fixed on the article. "Kelvin, this is huge. If Pope was involved in his first wife's murder, it could be a pattern." I nodded, my grip on the tea cup tightening. "I know. And I think it's more than just a pattern. I think it's a web of deceit and corruption that goes all the way to the top." Tweeny, who had been quietly observing, spoke up. "Sir Kelvin, do you think we can trust the police with this information?" I hesitated, unsure of who to trust. "I don't know, Tweeny. But I do know we need to be careful. Pope has a lot of power and influence. We can't let him get away with this." As I spoke, I noticed a small note on the edge of the newspaper article. It was a handwritten message that read: "Meet me at the old warehouse at midnight. Come alone." My heart skipped a beat as I wondered who could have written this and what they wanted. I looked up at Merian and Tweeny, my eyes locked on theirs. "I think we have a lead."..
