Leaving Home
Katrina
It was a typical end of summer day in Lancaster. The smell of the air lingering with the distant scent of sprinklers and fresh cut grass. Katrina was packing her things into her Dodge Dart, she was preparing to leave for college. Wow, "college" she thought to herself. She always dreamed of getting out of her small town but today that dream was becoming reality. Katrina was a bit of a dreamer and always a bit out of place in this small town. As she packed her last bag in the trunk she slammed it shut and let out a breath into the air as she watched the sky turn its beautiful shades of amber. "Did you pack enough crap, Kitty?" Anthony, her goofy younger brother grumbled. Anthony was a tall lanky thing compared to Katrina, which was short with more of an hourglass build. Katrina scrunched up her nose as she rolled her eyes "No, i figured I'd bring the whole house." She said flatley. Katrina and Anthony have always had such a sarcastic way of showing their love for each other. "Yeah sure, Kitty." Anthony rolled his eyes. "So will you come back to visit me as soon as you can?" Anthony said while trying to hide his emotions. Katrina sighed tucking a strand of her long raven hair behind her ear, "Of course, Tony. You know I'm gonna miss you, right, you little squirt." Anthony protested, "I'm not a little kid anymore Kitty. I'm a man now." Katrina stared at her 16 year old brother and rolled her eyes. He really thinks that since hes 16, hes a man. Katrina chuckled to herself. "Whatever you say, you're still a little squirt in my eyes Tony." As she reached up and tussled his short brown wavy hair. At that moment their mother walked out of the house. "Please drive safe, Kitty. I know you're gonna be just fine but please call once you've arrived." Her mothers eyes cressed at the corners as her face struggled to relax from its tensed state. Their mother looked more like Anthony, with her shoulder length brown curly hair and tall slim build with emerald green eyes. Katrina always wondered where she got her silver-gray eyes. "Ill be sure to call mom, dont worry." Katrina said as she got in the car. Anthony ran up and hugged her tight. They stayed like that before he let go as she closed the door of her car. This was it, this was really it. They stared at each other for a few moments as Anthony walked back to the yard. It was a bitter sweet moment. The last moment Katrina would be spending in Lancaster before she started her new life. So many memories flashed before her eyes and she smiled. She waved to her mother and brother as she pulled out of the driveway. Anthony waving somberly while their mother just held his other hand, as Katrina looked at her rearveiw mirror. Onward to Alexandria.
