Evelyn Chapter - 1
c***k!
crack!
CRACK!
The gunshots fired as I bolted down the stairs, desperately searching for my phone.
I need to call my parents.
There are gunshots and screams outside my door now!.
My parents were nowhere to be seen.
I screamed in horror as I heard a gunshot just outside the window that I was going to pass.
What if something happened to them?
what if.....?
no, no, NO. Stop it!. I demand myself to be calm.
Nothing good is going to happen if i lose myself now.
I squatted under the kitchen counter and forced myself to take deep breaths.
Inhale...
Exhale...
After I was certain I was not going to have a panic attack, I stood.
I raced to the room downstairs. A room that I could count on to keep me safe.
I am TERRIFIED!
I mean, why wouldn't I be? If some people had a shooting contest outside my house.
Especially, my house as the target.
When your parents vanished into thin air. When you don't have the slightest idea of what's happening.
I try to calm myself down, but it's hard when I am freaking out!
I tried finding my phone, which I remember leaving in the charger.
But..... It's upstairs!
I ran upstairs. Taking two then three steps at a time.
I yanked open my bedroom door.
I saw my phone lying on the table, still charging. As soon as I entered, I practically jumped to plug it out of the charger.
It took a few tries to unlock my phone, as my hands were shaking.
When I did, I frantically searched for my parents' numbers.
I call my mom while checking the locks on the windows and doors, for who knows how many times.
I held my phone to my ear and heard it ring.
Each ring heightened my fear.
"Please pick up..." I whined into the phone, while shutting my eyes, so tightly that I saw stars.
Ring....
Ring....
Ring....
"Hi! This is Anne. You've reached my voicemail. Please leave your-".
"Ugh!" I shouted in frustration.
I called my dad. And it went straight to the voicemail......again.
Where are you two when I need you?
I checked the time on my phone.
12:36 AM.
Suddenly, I received a phone call from Posey.
My sister!.
I've been so caught up with all this that I forgot to inform my sister about this.
I received her call.
She spoke on the phone.
"Eve, I am going to be late" she paused.
Before I could open my mouth, she spoke again.
"Something important came up. My presence is required." She says, oblivious to the world around us.
"Posey, whatever happens DON'T come home tonight" I shouted on the phone.
The line went silent for a moment.
I opened my mouth to call out to her, when she spoke again.
Then she asked "Eve, Is everything alright?" her voice etched with worry.
I glanced around, pacing back and forth in the living room.
" Yeah, I am fine. For now" I said with fear.
"What happened, Eve!? Why is your voice shaking?" she asked, panicked.
"I have no idea what's happening, except for the fact that there are gunshots outside our house" I said with a shaky breath.
"There are gunshots outside our house!?" she asked, matching the emotion in my voice.
There were rustling sounds from the other line.
My eardrums hurt hearing it.
"Yes, couldn't you hear it from the phone?" I asked her, feeling angry all of a sudden.
The rustling sounds from the background are getting louder.
I pull my phone outwards, so that I don't have to hear the sounds.
"No, I can--"
The call ended before she could answer my question.
Ugh! I should have been downstairs when I talked to her.
I hurried downstairs.
As I was going to try calling her again...
"Evelyn~" I heard my name spoken by a deep voice.
I froze. I turned around and searched the house where I was standing.
"I know you're inside, my dear~" the deep voice said.
What the ---- .
I noticed the strange, deep voice drifting just outside the front door.
I hid behind the cupboard.
My heartbeats were getting faster.
It felt like my heart would jump out of my chest any second now.
"Don't worry, I won't harm you" the strange voice said.
Harm me?
God, please save me! I prayed quietly.
"Did your parents tell you why we're here?" he asked.
I stayed silent, not wanting to come out of my hiding place.
He chuckled.
"Guess they didn't~" he cooed.
I narrowed my eyes in confusion.
Are my parents hiding something from me?
But why are they outside our house?
"Don't worry, dear. You'll soon find out~" He lulled.
I heard footsteps walking away from the house.
I released my breath, which I had no idea I was holding.
What the f**k did he mean?
My parents!
I should call them and ask them about all this.
Just then, the gunshots get more fierce.
I sat down, folded my knees and covered my eyes.
Trying so hard not to cry.
I.....need....to...call...my....parents.
My whole body trembles.
No! Get it together, Eve.
Nothing's going to happen if you lose yourself.
I repeat what I've said before.
I slowly stood up and searched for my phone.
It was lying on the ground.
I picked it up and tried my parents' numbers.
Like before, neither of them answered.
I called Posey.
It rang a few times before she answered.
"Eve, are you okay?" she shouted through the phone.
"Yes, fortunately," I said.
"Are the gunshots still firing?" she asked.
"Yes, louder this time" I said in not more than a whisper.
"I'll be there as fast as I can" she said, as her voice shook.
"I told you, Posey. It's not safe here!" I said.
She stayed silent on the phone.
"Where are our parents anyway?" I asked her, with fury burning inside me.
"Don't worry, Eve. They'll-" The call ended. AGAIN!
I tried her number again. After a few rings, it said…
"No signal"
