I stood tall, trying to appear confident, as I faced the four vampires. Ryker, Kael, Asher, and Cormac. My sister had warned me about them, told me to stay away. But the Elder's Society had decreed that they would be my guardians, and I had no choice but to accept.
"What I want," I said, my voice cold, "is to be left alone. To live my life without being used by vampires like you."
Ryker's eyes flashed with anger, his jaw clenched. "You think you're in a position to make demands, little girl?" he growled.
Kael's face darkened, his voice low and menacing. "We're only here because the Elder's Society ordered us to protect you. We don't want to be your guardians."
I felt a surge of fear at their anger, but I stood my ground. "I don't want you to be my guardians either. But it seems like we're stuck with each other."
Ryker sneered. "You have no idea what you're getting yourself into. We're not babysitters, Evelyn. We're vampires. And we won't be ordered around by a mere human."
Kael's temper seemed to boil over, and he took a step closer to me. "We refuse to be your guardians," he snarled. "You're not worth the trouble."
Asher and Cormac exchanged a glance, but remained silent. I wondered if they disagreed with Ryker and Kael, but they didn't speak up.
"I don't need your protection," I said, trying to sound firm. "I have my sister, and the Elder's Society."
Ryker's expression turned cold. "Your sister can't protect you from everything, Evelyn. And the Elder's Society only cares about one thing: your blood."
I felt a shiver run down my spine at his words. I knew I was in danger, but I refused to back down.
"Leave," I said, trying to sound commanding. "I don't want you here."
Kael's eyes narrowed. "We'll leave, but this isn't over, Evelyn. We'll be watching you, waiting for the day when you'll need us."
Ryker turned to leave, but not before casting me a cold glance. "You'll come crawling back to us, Evelyn. And when you do, don't expect any sympathy."
The door slammed shut behind them, and I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. I knew I had just made some very powerful enemies.
But I also knew that I couldn't trust them. Not with my life, not with my blood. I was on my own now.
Or so I thought.
As I turned to leave, I caught Asher's gaze lingering on me, his eyes sparkling with interest. And for a moment, I felt a flutter in my chest.
Maybe I wasn't as alone as I thought.
I walked into the living room, where my sister Posey was waiting for me, a look of concern etched on her face.
"Hey, how did it go?" she asked, as soon as I sat down.
I shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "It was fine, I guess. They're not happy about being my guardians."
Posey's eyes narrowed. "What did they say exactly?"
I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But Posey's expression was insistent, so I relayed the conversation, leaving out some of the more tense moments.
Posey listened intently, her face growing more and more satisfied. "So, they're refusing to be your guardians?" she asked, a hint of excitement in her voice.
I nodded. "Yeah. Ryker and Kael seem pretty adamant about it."
Posey let out a breath, her shoulders relaxing. "Good. I was worried they'd try to manipulate you into doing their bidding."
I raised an eyebrow. "You're happy about this?"
Posey nodded. "Yes, I am. Those four are not to be trusted. Especially Ryker and Kael. They're too powerful, too used to getting what they want."
I frowned, feeling a pang of unease. "But what about my protection? The Elder's Society said—"
Posey waved her hand dismissively. "Don't worry about that. I'll talk to the Elder's Society, make sure they understand the situation. We'll find someone else to protect you, someone who doesn't have ulterior motives."
I felt a surge of gratitude toward my sister. She always put my well-being first.
"But what about Asher and Cormac?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me. "They seemed... different."
Posey's expression turned thoughtful. "Asher and Cormac are wild cards. They're not as entrenched in the vampire hierarchy as Ryker and Kael. But that doesn't mean they're harmless."
I nodded, taking her warning to heart.
Posey leaned forward, her eyes serious. "Evelyn, you need to be careful. The vampire world is full of dangers, and you're a valuable target. Don't trust anyone too easily."
I nodded, feeling a sense of determination. I would protect myself, no matter what.
But as I looked at Posey, I couldn't shake the feeling that Asher's gaze had left on me. A spark of attraction, a glimmer of hope.
Was I really safe from the vampires? Or was I just trading one danger for another?
I nodded, trying to appear confident, but Posey's words of warning lingered in my mind. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was caught in a web of danger, with no clear escape.
As I stood up to leave, Posey's hand on my arm stopped me. "Evelyn, be careful around Asher and Cormac too," she said, her voice low. "They may seem friendly, but they're still vampires. And we don't know their true intentions."
I felt a shiver run down my spine as I remembered Asher's gaze, the way it seemed to see right through me. But I pushed the thought aside, trying to focus on the present.
"I will, Posey," I promised. "I'll be careful."
But as I walked to my room, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched. I glanced over my shoulder, but there was no one there.
I tried to focus on my books, but my mind kept wandering back to the four vampires. Ryker and Kael, with their cold, calculating eyes. Asher and Cormac, with their mysterious, intriguing gazes.
I felt a flutter in my chest as I thought about Asher, the way he seemed to smile just for me. But I pushed the feeling aside, trying to remind myself of the danger.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't shake the feeling that my life was about to change forever.
The next day, I tried to focus on my routine, but my mind kept wandering back to the vampires. I wondered what Asher and Cormac were doing, if they were thinking about me too.
As I walked to the library, I felt a presence behind me. I turned, expecting to see one of the vampires, but it was just a student, hurrying to class.
I sighed, feeling a mix of relief and disappointment.
But as I pushed open the library door, I saw him. Asher. Sitting at a table, his eyes fixed on me.
My heart skipped a beat as our gazes met, and for a moment, I forgot to breathe.
