Chapter 17: The Wolf's Claim Lyra's Point of View The world fell away from under my feet. The wind rushed past my ears. The sky turned. Before I could stop it, my scream came out. I was falling. The ravine opened up below me like a dark mouth, with sharp rocks ready to tear me apart. My fingers clawed at the air. My heart slammed so much it hurt. A voice in my head said, "This is how it ends." Again. Then a loud noise broke the silence. Not human. Not normal. Wolf. A huge blur went by me. Just before my body hit the rocks, strong arms wrapped around my waist. The hit still hurt, but not as much as it should have. We rolled hard over rocks and dirt, and dust got in my mouth and pain shot through my side. Then everything came to a halt. I lay there, shaking, with my back agains
