Chapter 1 – The Slave OmegaLyra’s POV
Chapter 1 – The Slave Omega
Lyra’s POV
The bell rang before the sun was fully awake. A sharp, cold sound that always made my spine hurt in the same way. It meant one thing: Get up. Now.
I pushed myself off the thin mattress. The omegas' small room was already full of tired bodies moving around like shadows. There was no talking. Nobody was brave enough to. If you talked before morning orders, you got a punishment. In this pack, punishments were never small.
When my feet hit the cold floor, I felt a shiver go up my legs. I pulled my hair back with my fingers, picked up the plain gray dress that was folded on my bed, and put it on. It was too big for me and hung loosely around my shoulders, but no one cared how we looked.
We were here to serve.
I was hungry, but I had to wait until after work to eat. If it even came.
When we walked out into the hallway, some wolves with higher ranks got in our way. They didn't pay us any attention. They thought omegas were like dust—only visible when we got in their way.
I went down the stairs and into the kitchen with the others. It smelled like smoke and onions in the air. I took a knife and began cutting up the vegetables for the Alpha's stew in the morning. I moved my hands quickly. They had to. The Head Cook would scream until her voice broke if the food wasn't ready before the Alpha woke up.
"Lyra," someone whispered close to me. Another omega, Mira. Her voice was small and shaky.
I didn't look up. "Yes?"
"Did you hear? The Alpha returns today.
My hands froze for a short time.
Alpha Raine
The name felt like a cold stone hitting my chest. Before he left for the border patrol weeks ago, I had only seen him from a distance. A shadow that is very tall. A presence that is dangerous. A man who had power like a storm had thunder—loud, heavy, and hard to ignor
I started chopping again. "Then we cook faster."
Mira's breath came out quickly, like a scared laugh. "Everyone is already afraid." They say he's in a dark mood.
"When isn't he?" I whispered
And that was it. We never spoke again.
As the smell of meat filled the air, the kitchen was full of panic. Pots clanged, footsteps rushed, and someone cried quietly in a corner. I stirred the pot with shaky hands, hoping no one noticed.
We took the trays to the dining hall just before the sun came up. I kept my head down and my eyes on the floor. Omegas were forbidden from meeting the Alpha’s gaze unless he asked for it. And he never asked.
There was no one in the hall now. The long tables and polished floors were cold and quiet. We put the dishes in order and stepped aside to wait.
Every second that went by made my heart race faster.
The doors opened.
Then he walked in.
Alpha Raine
The first thing I noticed was that the air was getting tighter. The room was full of him like a thick fog. Very tall. Wide shoulders. Short hair that is dark. Eyes that can cut through stone. His aura had power and danger, which made my wolf curl up tightly inside me.
I looked down right away.
But I could feel him moving even though I wasn't looking at him. Every step was slow, steady, and strong. A wolf who knew that no one else in the room could beat him.
My chest shook with my breath.
Don't make a scene. Don't say anything. Don't even think too loudly.
That was the rule when he was there
He sat down and the chair made a soft noise. People rushed to help him—warriors, not omegas. Omegas weren’t allowed near him.
But today felt... off.
I tried to blend in with the line of omegas at the wall, but someone pushed me.
"Lyra. Serve him the bread!
My eyes got bigger. "Me?"
"Yes, you!" "move!"
As I stepped forward, my legs felt weak. I picked up the tray with both hands, being careful not to let my fingers shake. Every step made the tray feel heavier.
I could hear my heart beating.
Don't let it drop. Don't let it drop.
I got to his table and put the bread in front of him.
And made a mistake.
I lifted my head—just a little—to set the tray down properly.
His eyes met mine.
It was one second. One tiny second.
But I felt it like a lightning strike.
His stare held me in place. His eyes were dark, almost black, and they looked at me like I was something strange. A new thing. Something he shouldn't have looked at but couldn't stop looking at.
Heat rushed into my cheeks.
I quickly bowed my head. "forgive me, Alpha.”
Silence.
It stretched long enough to make my knees want to give out.
Then—
"What's your name?" His voice was deep and smooth, but it had a heaviness that made my chest feel tight.
I swallowed hard. " L-Lyra, Alpha."
Another pause.
I could feel when his eyes lowered to my hands. They were shaking.
"Look at me".
No. No, please no.
But the order tugged at my wolf, forcing me raise my head. I looked into his eyes again. My breathe caught.
His gaze wasn't angry. It wasn't cold. It was...curious.
As if he was trying to figure something out.
He studied at my face slowly. Too slowly. The attention made my skin crawl. There was something strange in his eyes, like he was seeing something he didn’t expect to see.
My heart thumped wildly.
My fingers twitched.
My wolf pushed forward, confused.
Why was he looking at me like that?
And then, without blinking, he said in a low voice that only I seemed to hear:
"You smell different."
I couldn't catch my breath. For a moment, my vision got blurry.
No. No. That wasn’t possible. It couldn’t be—
Omegas didn’t smell different. Not unless—
I stepped back, panic rushing through me.
But he tilted his head, still starring, still trying to figure out what the strange smell was.
A warrior cleared his throat. "Alpha, should we get rid of her?"
Alpha Raine didn't answer. His eyes stayed locked on mine.
My hand slipped, and the tray fell from my fingers, crashing loudly against the table.
The entire hall froze.
Alpha Raine slowly stood up from his chair, his chair scraping on the floor.
He took one step toward me.
Then another.
And another.
Until he was standing so close that I could feel his breath on my forehead.
His voice dropped, quiet and dark.
"Lyra... What are you hiding?
I swallowed, but no words came out.
His eyes narrowed.
His lips parted.
His wolf pushed forward visibly behind his gaze—
Then he said three words that ripped through the room like claws:
"Why do you smell like my mate?"
