Chapter 23: A Dangerous Alliance

The air in the morning smelt like smoke, dirt, and stress.
I was at the edge of the camp, watching Raine talk to my pack's council. He seemed calm, in charge, and like an Alpha, but the bond was buzzing under the surface, sending out warnings and excitement at the same time. My stomach turned.
This alliance was meant to be short-lived. Safe, practical, and political.
But nothing about him or the rogues was ever easy.
Raine stepped up next to me and said in a low voice that only I could hear, "Luna, I need you to be sharp today." I'm not fighting this battle by myself.
