Chapter 19: The First Fight
From Lyra's point of view
The supply run was supposed to be easy.
We told ourselves that was true.
As we left, the morning light broke through the trees. There were six guards, two waggons, and Raine riding at the front like nothing could touch him. I rode in the middle, with my hood up and my hands tightly on the reins.
I didn't want to leave the camp.
The land beyond it felt sharp. On guard.
"Stay close," Raine said without looking back.
I heard the order through the calm. Not like an Alpha talking to a Luna.
Like a wolf protecting what was important.
I replied, "I always do."
His wolf moved around, warm and restless in my head.
As we walked, the forest got denser. The birds stopped singing. The wind even seemed to be holding its breath.
