Chapter 5 — A Touch Too Close Lyra’s POV The alarms kept going off, and they sounded like the sky was yelling all night long. Pack members ran past me, warriors grabbed weapons, mothers held their pups close, and elders whispered prayers under their breath. But I stayed frozen. I couldn't move my body. My breath stuck in my throat. The woman’s cold words—You’re not safe—still clung to my skin. Then Raine's voice broke through everything. "Lyra!"" His voice was sharp and commanding, and it brought me back to reality. He stepped in front of me and the chaos, his eyes burning with something fierce that made my wolf lift her head even though she was scared. "Inside," he said. "Now." I shook my head. "But—" "No arguing." His jaw got tight. "The rogues are close." I swallowed hard. My legs finally did what I told them to do, even though they were weak. I rushed to the hall, and Raine's presence followed me every step of the way, as if he were forcing his wolf stay calm. Pack members were already lining up when we got to the gathering hall. Warriors stood guard by the doors while omegas huddled inside, scared and talking in whispers. Raine turned to one of his beta guards. "Keep an eye on her until I get back." The guard nodded right away. I opened my mouth to protest, but Raine had already turned away, heading back into the night where screams and growls clashed. My chest got tight. I didn't understand why his safety was so important all of a sudden—why the thought of him out there made my hands shake. I shouldn't have felt this way. I was nothing. I was no one. Just an omega. Mira rushed to my side, grabbing my hand."Lyra! Are you all right?" I nodded, but I wasn't. "Where are the others?"" "Hiding behind the tables." "Everyone's scared." She turned to look at the door. "The rogues haven't bothered our pack in months. Why now?" I had no answer. The minutes dragged on, full of distant shouts and snarls. I flinched at every sound. The hall shook with every scream. My wolf was pacing inside of me, worried and restless, which was not how she usually acted. Mira squeezed my hand. “He’ll handle it. He’s Alpha Raine.” I didn't say anything. I might not have been able to. Even though she meant to comfort me, her words only made my heart beat faster. When the fighting stopped, the doors opened, and the warriors came back one by one. Some had scratches and others were limping, but they were all alive. And then— Raine stepped inside. He wasn't hurt, but he was breathing hard, had sweat on his forehead, and his shirt was ripped at the shoulder. His eyes swept quickly around the room. Searching. When he saw me, something sharp and warm flashed through him before he blinked it away. Mira said in a quiet voice, "He was looking for you." I acted like I didn't hear. Raine spoke loudly, addressing everyone. “The rogues retreated before crossing the inner line. We believe they were testing our borders. No one was taken. No one injured severely.” A wave of relief swept through the room. He went on, "We need everyone in the pack to be at the gathering tonight for further instructions." A gathering. Of course. I knew omegas would be there to serve and stand in the back like shadows. I told myself it was nothing. Just another task. Just another night where I would keep my head down. But the way Raine glanced at me… made it seem like something else entirely. When the gathering began, the moon hung heavy in the sky. As pack members stood in circles around the clearing whispering anxiously, lanterns lit up the area. I stayed near the back with other omegas. Mira stood beside me, tapping her fingers nervously. Raine stood at the front, tall and calm, even though his eyes still showed how tense the night had been. “We strengthen patrols,” he was saying. “No one walks alone until further notice. Rogues don’t test borders for nothing.” Pack members nodded in agreement and fear. I tried to listen, I really did. But I couldn't stop looking at him. The ripped shirt. The marks on his hands. The way his voice stayed low, steady, and protecting. I didn’t want to admire him. And yet… A tray full of cups was shoved into my hands, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Take these around," one of the older omegas said quietly. I nodded quickly and stepped forward, offering drinks to groups of pack members. But the tray felt heavier than usual, like every step brought me closer and closer to something I wasn’t supposed to touch. Then someone bumped me from behind. My balance wobbled. The tray tipped. I gasped as it slipped— But a strong hand caught mine before it hit the ground. Heat shot through me. I looked up. Raine was only a few inches away, holding my wrist in one hand and steadying the tray with the other. His touch wasn’t rough or cold. It was warm—too warm. Like fire spreading through my skin. My breath caught. His dark, intense eyes were fixed on mine. “Careful, Lyra.” It felt like the world stopped moving. My heartbeat fluttered wildly. My wolf pushed ahead, wanting more and wanting to be closer. My knees weakened, and for a moment I forgot where I was… who I was. He slowly let go of my wrist, but he didn't move away. And neither did I. Something pulled us together—quiet, soft, dangerous. Something I didn’t understand and couldn’t control. His fingers brushed mine as he helped stabilize the tray. Just a touch. Just a breath. But it felt like lightning running through my veins. Mira, watching from the side, covered her mouth with both hands, eyes huge. Raine’s jaw tightened. “You should stand back. It’s safer behind the line.” I nodded, unable to speak. It felt like my wolf was pushing against my ribs and trying to get away. My whole body was warm and shaking. He turned away quickly, like the touch had startled him too. But before he walked off, I saw his hand curl into a fist… as if he was fighting the same strange pull. My chest tightened. This bond—whatever it was—was growing. Too fast. Too strong. Too impossible. I put the tray down and stepped back to get some air. Wanting space. “Lyra, are you okay?"Mira whispered. "No," I breathed. "I... I don't know." Before she could ask more, a loud cough echoed from across the clearing. Everyone turned. The same woman from earlier—the one with the cruel eyes—stepped forward into the circle. Her gaze swept over the pack before landing on Raine. She announced, "I have news," and her voice was sharp and cold. Raine stiffened, clearly annoyed. “This is not the time—” “Oh, it is,” she said, cutting him off. “Because your pack deserves to know the truth.” My stomach dropped. She smiled, slow and wicked. “Your Alpha is hiding something important.” Whispers exploded immediately. Raine’s expression hardened. “Enough, Selene.” Selene. Her name. She lifted her chin. “Tell them, Raine. Tell them why the rogues came tonight. Tell them what drew them in.” Raine’s jaw clenched. "You don't know what you're talking about." “Oh, I do.” Her eyes flashed as she turned—slowly, deliberately—toward me. My heart stopped. Selene pointed straight at me. “It’s because of her.” Gasps rose around the clearing. My legs froze. Selene continued, voice sharp like broken glass. “The rogues came because they sensed something inside her. Something connected to you.” Every pair of eyes swung to Raine. Then me. Then back to him. My breath hitched. No. No, no. Selene’s smile widened. “Tell them the truth, Raine,” she said. “Tell them the omega is your fated mate.” The entire clearing fell silent. My world shattered. Raine didn’t speak. He didn’t deny it. He didn’t take a single step away from me. And the pack— The pack turned toward me with a mixture of shock, fear, and anger starting to rise like a storm. I took a shaky step back. Then another. Because I suddenly realized— I might not leave this clearing alive. And Raine still said nothing.
