Chapter 5

Bryan knew the situation outside was still unsafe. The weather was cold, and the sun was obscured by clouds. It would be unwise for Herlin to be taken back to Robert’s place. The man had left Herlin at his house, in a special room to keep her hidden from other vampires. He then went hunting in the forest to gather food that he could prepare for Herlin. As night fell, Bryan roasted some wild chickens and rabbits, along with a few fibrous foods. He served Herlin with the utmost care. “Eat. You look very hungry,” he said. “You’re surprisingly kind in hosting your guests,” Herlin replied. “You know, you’re the only human who has ever come to my home.” Herlin looked around Bryan’s yard. “Don’t vampires have families or marry other vampires?” “No, we live solely for responsibility,” Bryan answered. Vampires could only survive on blood, not by depending on one another. “Please, enjoy your food,” he added. Herlin stared at the roasted chicken that looked so delicious and then devoured it. For the first time, she tasted the most delicious roasted chicken she’d ever had. “This is amazing! Have you always cooked human food?” “Yes, I often prepare meals like humans because I’m tired of the vampire way of just drinking animal blood.” “You seem very friendly. Why don’t you find a human to be your companion here?” “Even though I appear friendly, the vampire side of me could emerge at any time, and I don’t want to put my human partner in danger.” Hearing that, Herlin smiled. “But it seems like your conscience is almost human,” she said. Bryan laughed wholeheartedly. That night, they enjoyed their dinner together, and Herlin started to feel comfortable around Bryan. For two days, the weather remained gloomy, and the rain poured relentlessly, preventing Herlin from leaving. She sat on Bryan’s porch, watching the rain that showed no sign of stopping. “The weather is so unforgiving. I wanted to return to Robert and tell him I’m okay. I’m afraid he’s worrying too much about me.” “Does Robert always protect you? Don’t you know that werewolves have hot blood and no conscience?” “Yes, he saved me when I was kidnapped by an evil vampire,” Herlin said. “Trust me, Herlin. He did that because he sees you as his Luna or mate. But one day, when he meets his destined mate, he will forget you.” Herlin stared into Bryan’s eyes, slightly bewildered. “But so far, he’s been good to me.” “Werewolves have an instinctive loyalty to their destined mate. He is an Alpha, and he is loyal to his Luna,” Bryan explained. “Maybe it’s out of guilt for some misunderstanding that he feels protective of you.” Hearing that, Herlin swallowed hard, trembling slightly. “But I love Robert,” she said softly. “I hope you don’t let yourself fall too deeply into those feelings, Herlin, because what you’re dealing with is not human. I’m afraid you’ll end up shattered,” Bryan warned. The night passed, and on the third day, the weather seemed slightly more pleasant as the sun began to shine. Herlin woke up from her sleep in Brian’s comfortable house. She got out of bed and was overjoyed when she saw the bright sunlight. "Brian, look! The sun is shining brightly, which means I can go back to Robert now. Can you take me there?" "I don’t need to take you. I think Robert will find you on his own." "Don’t tell me you’ve also trapped Robert into coming here. Please, I beg you, don’t hurt Robert." Hearing her words, Brian laughed heartily. "Come on, Herlin, don’t think that way. Yes, I’m a vampire, but I’m not the kind of vampire that preys on humans, and I have no connection to Robert." "Maybe Thomas and the other vampires have their own grudge against Robert, but I don’t care about any of that." "I saved you from Thomas because I couldn’t bear to see you become their prey." "Then why won’t you take me back to Robert?" "I’ve already told you—Robert will find you because you’re bonded to him. Didn’t you say you married Robert on the night of the full moon?" Herlin nodded. Brian took a deep breath and said, "If that’s the case, no matter where you go, even to the ends of the earth, Robert will still find you." Hearing this, Herlin felt slightly relieved, but something still disturbed her. She began to feel nauseous and dizzy. Herlin headed to the bathroom. She started vomiting, feeling dehydrated and weak. "What’s wrong with you? Do you need to rest?" Herlin nodded and followed Brian back to the room. Brian then took Herlin to a simple clinic at the edge of the forest. The human doctor there revealed that Herlin was pregnant. Herlin reacted instinctively, shocked but also happy. "I'm pregnant? I’m pregnant with Robert’s child?" Hearing Herlin’s words, Brian paused for a moment. "You know, Herlin, this is not good." "What do you mean, not good?" "You cannot carry the seed of a werewolf." Herlin froze for a moment. "Why not? I’m fine with carrying Robert’s child." "Your child will create a new civilization on this earth—a hybrid between a werewolf and a human. And that’s not a good thing, Herlin," he explained firmly. "A werewolf civilization can live peacefully in this world, so why can’t my child? I will give birth to this baby no matter what," Herlin replied resolutely. Herlin’s firm stance left Brian somewhat stunned and speechless. Meanwhile, elsewhere, Robert felt a strong instinct guiding him to Herlin’s location, and he began making his way there. When Robert arrived, he found Herlin with Brian, the kind vampire he had known all along. Brian explained to Robert that Herlin was pregnant with his child. Hearing that statement, Robert was shocked by Herlin’s pregnancy. "Robert, what’s wrong with you? Why aren’t you happy about the news of my pregnancy?" The man could only stare at Herlin with a glassy-eyed gaze, his expression filled with emotion, but his lips were unable to utter a single word.
