CHAPTER 1: The Night Everything Changed
Elira POV
I ran barefoot through the forest, branches clawed at my arms, mud splashed up my legs. My chest burned so badly I thought my lungs would tear apart.
“Stop her!” The roar echoed behind me.
Fear slammed into me harder than the cold rain. I looked back once and instantly regretted it.
Three Blackthorn warriors were gaining on me fast, their glowing eyes cutting through the darkness.
I stumbled over a root and nearly fell face-first into the mud. “Damn it…” I gasped.
“Don’t let the cursed omega escape!” another voice shouted. Cursed omega?
The words still hurt even after hearing them my whole life.
I pushed myself harder. The forest blurred around me,rain poured heavily from the sky, soaking my thin dress on my skin. My heartbeat sounded louder than the thunder,I couldn’t let them catch me again.
A sharp pain twisted violently in my lower stomach, forcing a cry from my lips. I pressed my hand there instantly.
“No,please no,not now.” I sobbed while pressing my hand against my stomach.
“Found her!” I froze.
One of the warriors landed directly in front of me, blocking the narrow path. He was massive, nearly twice my size, with a scar running down his neck.
His lips curled. “You really thought you could escape Blackthorn territory?”
I backed away slowly. “I wasn’t trying to escape…” I sobbed.
“Liar.” another warrior appeared behind me.
They circled me slowly like predators cornering wounded prey.
“You embarrassed Alpha Kael tonight,” the scarred one sneered. “Did you really think there would be no punishment?”
My throat tightened painfully at the mention of his name.
Alpha Kael Draven,my mate.
The man who rejected me before the entire pack three months ago and still kept me trapped in his territory afterward like a prisoner.
He looked at me with disgust every single time our paths crossed.
I swallowed hard.
“I didn’t do anything wrong,” I whispered.
The scarred warrior barked out a laugh.
“You spoke back to the Alpha.”
“I only asked permission to leave the banquet.” she said.
“You don’t ask permission,” he snapped. “You obey.” The others laughed.
Heat burned behind my eyes, but I forced the tears back. Crying only made them crueler.
One of them stepped closer and grabbed my jaw roughly.
“You weak little omega,” he mocked. “Do you know how lucky you are? Alpha Kael could’ve killed you after rejecting you.” My body stiffened.
The rejection, even thinking about it made the pain return all over again.
I could still hear Kael’s cold voice from that night. “You are nothing but a burden forced upon me.”
The entire pack watched, watched while my mate rejected me,while I stood there shaking in my wedding dress.
But kael never released me,he kept me not as his Luna nor as his mate.
Just as something under him. Something easy to control.
Thunder crashed overhead. The warrior suddenly shoved me backward hard enough that I hit the wet ground.
Pain exploded through my side. I cried out softly.
“Pathetic,” one of them spat.
“Please…” I whispered. “I just want to go back to my room.”
The scarred warrior crouched before me.
“You should’ve remembered your place before embarrassing the Alpha.”
“I didn’t embarrass him.” His expression darkened instantly.
“Wrong answer.” The slap came hard enough to send my head sideways.
Pain rang through my skull. “Watch your tone, omega.” I tasted blood in my mouth.
My entire body trembled. I’d spent my entire life being afraid of rogues,my pack and afraid of making mistakes.
Because every mistake cost me something. First was my parents, then my siblings
Another sharp pain twisted violently through my stomach.
I gasped and folded slightly.
The warriors noticed immediately. The scarred one narrowed his eyes.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“N-Nothing,I’m fine.” I said.
Another wave hit me harder this time,my vision blurred for a second.
The scarred warrior grabbed my arm and yanked me up roughly.
“You’re hiding something.” he said
“I’m not!” I said. “Liar.” He shoved me against a tree.
The impact knocked the breath from my lungs.
“Alpha Kael should’ve thrown you out after rejecting you,” he snarled. “Instead, he lets you live in his pack, eat his food, breathe his air”
“I barely eat,” I snapped before I could stop myself.
The warrior stared at me,and so did the others.
I realized my mistake too late.
“You dare interrupt me?” he asked softly.
Fear crashed into me. “I,I didn’t mean too”
His hand wrapped around my throat.
“You omegas never learn.”
Tears filled my eyes immediately as he tightened his grip.
I clawed weakly at his wrist.
“I can’t breathe,” I said, struggling.
“Maybe that’s better for everyone.” My vision blurred.
Panic exploded inside me but then, the storm answered.
Wind suddenly slammed through the trees violently, the warriors staggered backward in shock.
Leaves and branches whipped through the air, thunder exploded overhead so loudly the ground shook on us.
The warrior released me instantly.
“What the hell?” he said, confused.
Rain poured harder, the wind screamed around us unnaturally.
I stared at my trembling hands in horror.
This had happened before, small things at first like lights flickering, windows shattering.
The storms appeared whenever I cried too hard. I never understood it and I definitely couldn’t control it.
The scarred warrior looked at me differently now.
“She’s doing this,” one of them whispered.
“That’s impossible.” the other said said
Another crack of thunder split the sky.
I backed away slowly.
“I didn’t” I said
“Grab her!” one of the warriors yelled.
Panic surged through me,I turned and ran.
This time the storm moved with me,branches crashed behind the warriors.
I didn’t stop because I couldn’t control it.
The pain in my stomach grew worse with every step.
I reached the edge of the cliffs before realizing where I was.
My breath caught, there was nowhere left to run. The cliff dropped straight into the raging river below.
The warriors emerged behind me seconds later.
“You’re finished,” the scarred one growled.
Rain drenched all of us,I backed closer to the edge.
“I won’t go back.” I said.
“You don’t have a choice,” he said.
“I’d rather die.” I replied.
The warrior lunged toward me.
Pain ripped through my stomach so violently that I screamed. My knees hit the ground instantly.
The warriors froze,I curled forward, shaking badly.
The scarred warrior stared at me in confusion.
Then his eyes dropped lower to the blood slowly staining my dress.
My heart stopped,a soft gasp came from behind the warriors.
I looked up weakly,Mira. The pack healer stood there under the rain, horror filling her face.
Her eyes locked onto the blood.
Realization struck her instantly.
“You’re pregnant?” she whispered.
