Chapter One
" Mommy, Daddy! Look, look how high I can go!" I shouted swinging my legs back a forth trying to get higher on the swing. They both looked over with big smiles on their faces " That's great honey!" My dad shouted which urged me to go higher! I knew I could because I did it before. " be careful sweetie " my mommy shouted. " I will" I shouted back but still tried to go higher, kicking my little legs as fast as I could gradually getting higher and higher " Look!! Look!! Mommy!! " I screamed with excitement but when I herd them scream my name in horror I stopped not feeling excited anymore. Was I going to high? I didn't hurt my self. When the swing came to a stop a saw my parents rushing towards me, panic and horror on their faces, I stayed rooted to the seeing " im , sorry I didn't meant to go so high" I said with tears in my eyes. My . " mother grabbed me, picking me up and cradling me to her chest " Shh its okat baby, were not mad. We just need to go home now!" her voice sounded weird and scared and I didn't like it. " Whats wrong mommy " I tried to ask as we rushed back to the car but no one spoke to me, I tried to look around for daddy but mommy held my head down. Why coudnt I find daddy? Whats going on? And then I herd it, a fierce growling noise spreading all around me causing my mother to stop dead in her tracks. " Whats that noise mommy!" I asked feeling very scared! She shushed me and told me to be quiet but she didn't move. The growling got louder and closer and my mother started to sob. She placed me on the floor and crouched down infront of me, moving the hair out of my face. Her eyes were all red and puffy and she looked sad, very sad. " My sweet Bonnie, I need you to do something for me, can you do that? She asked and I nodded. " when I tell you to run, I need you to run into the woods as fast as you can and never look back, no matter what you hear! Can you do that for me?" she sniffed trying to hold back the tears. I wiped them away with my hand " Why cant I stay with you mommmy" " Because sweetie, mommy has to do something very important" " Whats that " I asked. Tears falling from my eyes. " she has to portect you!" Mommy pulled me in for the tightest hug I had ever had and I squeezed back even harder but as I looked over her shoulder and into the forrest I saw black eyes emerge from the trees, and I couldn't help the scream that escaped my throat as a giant wolf stepped into the sun light. My mother who was now alarmed pulled me behind her and stood infront of the giant wolf. " Bonnie, I need you to run! I need you to run now!" She screamed. I shook my head, I didn't want to leave her here alone. " Bonnie go now!!! " and as soon as she screamed those words the giant black grey wolf leapt towards her. This time I did what I was told and I ran into the forest. I ran so fast my legs burned but I didn't stop not once and the further I got the quieter my mommys screams became. I awoke with a start, my heart hammering against my chest and my body covered in sweat from my nightmare. I shook away the echoing screams and flopped back down onto my make shift bed. Looking up at the pink early morning sky through the canopy of the trees, I let out a long sigh, my nightmare still affecting me. It may have been a lifetime ago but its feels like yesterday. The day the wolves stepped out of the shadows and into the light. The day humanity dropped on the food chain. The day I became an orphan. Life changed as we know it, humans were no longer on top, instead they answered to the wolves. We tried to fight at first, and we thought we could win, but we were wrong. They were stronger, faster and smarter and within a day they won. We conceded, not wanting to loose anymore people. So we gave up, traded in our lives for them. Our towns, city's became districts, the lower the class the worst the district. Everyone had manual labour jobs, woman wernt allowed to attend school anymore. Everything changed. You either obeyed, or you died. And if your lucky one of them would claim you as their mate and youd live happily ever after. id rather die. Soon the pinks turned into blue and the day started, how I wish I could just lie here and let the world go by but my rumbling stomach wouldn't allow it so with another long sigh I eventually got up. Rolling up my sleeping matt I placed it back into my backpack and headed for the river to fill up my canteen. The water was fresh and cooling as it glided down my throat and as I took another big gulp I savoured it. Nothing was as fresh as water running from the mountain. Making sure everything was safe and secure in my backpack and my silver infused knife was tucked into my boot I made my way to district nine which was one of the poorest districts in the country. Normally I wouldn't head into the district during the day but my food rations are gone and I needed to eat. To prove my point my stomach growled. again. I get in, trade then get out. Simple. Don't cause a scene and definitely don't get noticed. The walk to district nine is short and eventually I arrive at the main gates. Grabbing my Id out of my backpack a que in line with others waiting to get into the city. Some are travellers hoping to trade like me, other are family of the people who already live inside. This is the part I hate the most, coming face to face with the monsters them selves. I look up at the two huge guards dressed in black checking everyone's Id and then back down again. Don't be fooled by their charming appearance inside is a creature so horrid it can rip you to pieces by its teeth. I shiver suddenly remembering my nightmare but it passes when someone from behind pushes me to go further in the line. Once its my turn, I hand over my Id and stare at the ground. Never, and I mean never look a wolf in the eye. They demand respect and you'll regret it if you don't show any. " Whats your business here ?" The one on the right asked, his voice scratchy and deep. " Im just here to trade, sir. " A few seconds ticked by and I could feel their stares burning holes into the top of my head. Minuets passed before my ID was roughly shoved into my hand and I was told to move along. Once inside I let out a long breath and headed to the market. Walking the muddy streets I was appalled to see that everything looked worse than it did a few months ago. All the houses looked damaged, neglected like no one cared? What happened? I felt sorry for the family's that lived here. they worked 24/7 for ration tickets but still couldn't feed their children. What kind of life is this? Not one I want. The market was full of people today, the stalls were all full and everyone was rushing around. I made my way through the crowds of people towards the back and was greeted with the sight of a friend. As soon as he noticed me a bright smile graced his old face and he stood up to hug me " My dear, its been so long" He hugged me tight and I hugged him back " I know, ive been trying to stay low for a while " He let go of me and looked me up and down his face frowning " You've lost weight. " I rolled my eyes. Food is hard to come by these days and if you didn't have ration tickets your only chance was to steal it. " That's why im here Freddie". I pulled the few ration tickets I had left out of my pocket and handed them to him. He looked at them and then back at me " Is that all you have left?" I herd the sympathy in his voice " Ill get some more." I know he didn't believe me but instead took three tickets, leaving me with one " Freddie, take it " he shook his head " No, you need it. Now what do you want " Look down at all the canned goods I decided to go with my faves, meatballs, soup and ravioli " Whats with all the extra gaurds? " I noticed four more guard's on my way to the market, that more than normal for this district. Freddie looked around and then back at me leaning in slightly " Alpha daniels is coming. Thinks his mates here or something " I stood there, stunned. Alpha daniels is coming here? " Surely not, shed be in district two atleast " Freddie just shrugged his shoulders " Guess not" "Well I feel sorry for her" Freddie gave me a look that said the same but nothing else then handed me my bag full of food " And I put a little something extra in there for you" I looked inside the bag and sat ontop of the cans was a freshly baked loaf of bread. my mouth watered at the sight off it. "Thank you" I said as he got up to hug me goodbye. " Don't be a stranger" he shouted as I walked back towards the exit. Rounding the corner I headed for the gates of the city when something caught my eye, sat between two house was a woman and two kids, one boy and one girl. The woman held a sign in her hand that read will work for ration tickets and both her children looked very hungry. Why was nobody helping? looking down at the bag in my hand I made my decision and Walked over towards the woman. Pulling out the loaf of bread and a can of soup and I handed them to the woman who cried and thanked me many times. I told her it was nothing and as I saw her children dig into the bread I knew id made the right decision. I could go with less which is more than what this woman has. "That was very kind of you" a deep masculine voice startled me and I saw the woman's eyes grow wide with fear as she grabbed her two kids. I slowly turned around knowing who was behind me " I didn't do it to be kind, I did it because it was right. Sir " I kept my eyes trained on the muddy ground. He let out a throaty chuckle, " look at me " he commanded. Oh no. that wasn't good there was only one reason a wolf would ask you to look them in the eyes. When I didn't comply he asked again " Look. At. Me. " this time his tone was a bit harsher. I gulped and ever so slowly raised my eyes from the ground into his baby blue ones. Then the one word I wished never to hear left his lips. " Mate" so I did the only thing I could and I ran.
