WHAT THE DARKNESS TAUGHT ME
🌙 Chapter 1 – The Night Whispers The night had a way of swallowing the world whole, leaving only whispers and shadows. Ariya sat on the edge of the wooden dock, her feet dangling over the still water, watching the faint reflection of the crescent moon ripple across the lake. She liked nights like this—quiet, empty, safe. In the darkness, no one could see the cracks she tried so hard to hide. Her hands rested in her lap, trembling slightly. Not from the cold, but from the memories that always came back when the world grew silent. She told herself she was fine. That she didn’t need anyone. That love was a dangerous thing she could no longer risk. A soft shuffle on the dock made her heart skip. She turned, ready to demand that whoever it was leave—but the sight stopped her words. A man, leaning casually against the wooden railing, looked out at the lake just like her. His hair was dark, his eyes reflective like the water itself. He didn’t speak, and for a moment, Ariya didn’t either. “You shouldn’t be out here alone,” he said finally, his voice gentle, not judgmental. “I’m used to it,” she replied, her tone sharper than she meant. He smiled faintly, as if he understood more than she was willing to admit. “Maybe. But even the strongest people need someone sometimes.” Ariya looked back at the moon, pretending not to notice how his words had touched something inside her. She didn’t answer. She didn’t want to. But for the first time in a long time, she didn’t feel quite so alone. And just like that, the night whispered a secret: maybe darkness wasn’t only meant to hide pain—it could also teach you how to let someone in. She left the man in the dock and returned to her home.
