Chapter one: Away from home
I woke to the soft rushing of water from the bathing chamber.
My eyes blinked against the bright morning light. I sighed when my vision finally cleared and I saw the shape standing at the entrance to the washroom.
"you have to get up, Princess," Bella said.
"Do I have to?" I muttered, my face still buried in the pillows.
She looked far too pleased with herself.
Bella is fifty years old. Well _Lady_ Bella, as she likes to be addressed. She has been with me for as long as I can remember. She served my mother before she died, and somehow appointed herself to take care of me too. She has not left my side since.
"I will bring in your dress," she said, smiling.
"dress? Today?" I asked sarcasticly
Today is the coronation. In my kingdom, Eric will be ascending the throne with his mate, Sansa.
I disagree with this whole system, but what can I do? Eric is only sixteen. What would he possibly do on the throne, other than be a puppet? Or scatter everything my ancestors built?
It's hard to explain without sounding like I want the throne myself. Yes, I want it. Who doesn't want to sit and command thousands of men? But that is not what I crave. I crave freedom. It is the only thing I have ever asked for that my birthright cannot give me.
The throne would have been mine, if I had only been born the dominant gender. After all, I was born first.
It's a long story. We will get to it.
Bella left the door open, allowing a long row of maidens to march in.
"That would be very heavy," I commented as they arranged the pieces of garment on the bed.
"It sure is," Bella responded. "This was crafted by Sir Ben."
I opened my mouth in a sarcastic, "Wow."
Mister Ben is the best dressmaker in the kingdom. He has made half the gowns in my wardrobe, and this is just another robe.
"You should all go now," I told everyone, including Bella. "I will call for help when I need it."
They all left, leaving me alone in the large chamber.
This is my chance to run away. I have been planning it for years — okay, I'm kidding, it only feels like thousands of years — to get out of this palace. It has to be today. I cannot watch Eric and his pretentious mate, with his mother who set my whole life on fire.
Rumors have it that Trisha was my mother's best friend. After my mother died, she didn't waste a second. She got involved with my father, married him, and gave birth to that bastard Eric.
Yes, Eric is my step-brother...
when the coronation will be done
I would be bound to his kingdom. To rule alongside him.
And when they saw the perfect way to dispose of me, they wouldn't waste a second.
I already had my clothes on. It was a long veil.
It was the day I had prepared for. I waited patiently for the switching hour. It is the time when the guards switch. It takes roughly two minutes to get to the back gate.
I moved straight out of my room, checking every corner for any eyes. I had myself all covered up, but who wouldn't recognize silver hair? Silver hair only came from kings. Only my mother wore silver hair, and I had inherited it directly from her.
It didn't take a minute to reach the palace back door. it went alot smoother than I had imagined .I looked at the big, structured building for the last time. It was getting late and I had to move fast before they knew I was gone.
I just had to stay safe till the coronation was over.
The forest wasn't welcoming. I kept searching either way, it was scary, with the branches hanging low to the ground, almost as though they would swallow me.
I kept walking. I kept running. At some point I felt like I was in danger, it was getting deeper and deeper. This could lead me to a new kingdom, but I didn't care.
I just wanted to get away for one more night.
If I am right, it must have been more than an hour that I had been walking this long trail.
I was already getting tired. My legs were aching, my veil clinging to my damp skin. But I knew if I was gone too long, they would send guards. And all the trouble I had gone through to plan this escape would be for nothing.
Then I heard it.
Water. Rushing.
It was getting dark, and the sound was faint at first, but unmistakable. Something was out there. A stream, maybe a river. I rushed towards the sound, running as far as my legs would carry me.
I ran and ran.
And when I finally saw it — it was outrageous.
I stopped at the bank and stared. The silver moonlight was dimming beneath the water, glistening right around the edges. Green flowers hung low, dropping their petals directly into the current. It was beautiful.
Were there beautiful things like this outside the palace? I had never been outside the palace walls before, so I would never have known.
I knelt down and touched the water. It sparkled in my hands.
This was not new. It had always happened. And Bella knew about it — that water had an effect on me. It sparkled, and it clung to my skin like light itself.
I kept playing with it. This was too good to be wasted.
I removed my veil and slipped into the water. The water was cool and blue against my skin. It was overwhelming, and soothing at the same time, washing away all the stress I had gone through
If had knew there were creations like this outside the palace , I would have escaped sooner
