Chapter 1: He Offered Me a Marriage Contract
Chapter 1 – He Offered Me a Marriage Contract
Iris Cole had always believed that silence was safer than resistance.
Standing outside the glass doors of the Harrington Group headquarters, she tightened her grip on the thin folder in her hands. Inside were documents she had never imagined signing—documents that would decide the rest of her life.
The city skyline reflected off the building’s surface, cold and distant. Just like the man waiting for her upstairs.
Adrian Harrington.
His name alone carried weight. CEO. Heir. The man every business magazine loved and every rival feared. To Iris, he was something else entirely—her last option.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown Number: You’re five minutes late.
She inhaled sharply and typed back with trembling fingers.
Iris: I’m here.
The elevator ride felt endless. Each floor passing was another step away from the life she knew and closer to something she couldn’t control.
When the doors opened, a woman in a tailored black suit was already waiting.
“Miss Cole? This way.”
The office was quiet, almost intimidating. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the city like a painting, but Iris barely noticed. Her eyes were fixed on the man standing by the desk.
Adrian Harrington turned slowly.
He was taller than she expected, his presence calm yet overwhelming. His dark eyes assessed her without apology, as if he were evaluating an asset rather than a person.
“You came,” he said, voice low and even.
“I didn’t have a choice,” Iris replied before she could stop herself.
A flicker of something—amusement, perhaps—crossed his face.
“No,” Adrian said, taking a seat and gesturing for her to do the same. “You had many choices. This was simply the one you decided to accept.”
She sat, back straight, heart pounding.
“You know why I’m here,” she said.
“Yes.” He opened the folder she carried, scanning the pages as if he hadn’t memorized them already. “Your father’s debt. The lawsuit. The deadline.”
Her jaw tightened. “I need time.”
“You’re out of time.”
The words landed heavily between them.
Iris clenched her fists. “Then why call me here?”
Adrian closed the folder and finally looked at her fully.
“Because I’m offering you a solution.”
She swallowed. “And the price?”
A pause.
Then he slid a single document across the desk.
“A marriage contract.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“You can’t be serious.”
“I am.”
“This—this is insane,” Iris said, standing abruptly. “You expect me to marry you just to clean up a financial mess you could erase with a signature?”
Adrian leaned back, unbothered. “I could. But this benefits us both.”
“Benefits me how?”
“You walk away debt-free. Your family keeps their name. No court. No scandal.”
“And you?” she asked bitterly.
“I need a wife.”
The words were simple. Too simple.
“For appearances,” he continued. “A strategic marriage. Two years. No love. No interference in each other’s private lives.”
Iris stared at the contract, her pulse roaring in her ears.
“This isn’t a choice,” she whispered.
Adrian stood, towering over her. “It is. You can walk out that door.”
She looked at him then—really looked. Calm. Controlled. Certain she wouldn’t.
After a long moment, Iris picked up the pen.
“What happens if I refuse?”
His voice softened, dangerously so.
“Then everything you’re trying to protect disappears.”
Her hand shook as she signed.
The pen clicked against the paper, sealing a deal she would never forget.
Adrian watched quietly.
“Welcome, Mrs. Harrington,” he said.
Iris froze.
The contract had already begun.
