When the doors of City Hall closed behind me in the pouring rain, my heart died with them.

My phone lit up with messages from my college alumni group.

My fiancé's childhood sweetheart, Nina Bennett, had just sent everyone a huge digital gift and said, "Thanks for witnessing this! Even on the day he was supposed to marry his fiancée, he still chose to pick me up from the airport first."

My fiancé, Evan Sullivan, replied, "The Grant family's company still needs me to secure investors. Letting Sophie suffer a little isn't a big deal. Nina matters more."

I had spent seven years standing by him while he built his business from nothing.

Yet in his eyes, I was nothing more than a disposable pawn he could manipulate whenever it benefited him.

Thirty minutes later, I changed into my evening gown and pushed open the doors to our engagement party.

Evan was charming the older generation with talk of our families' future partnership, casually explaining that he had been late that afternoon because of an "urgent business matter."

I walked straight to the control booth, pulled out his flash drive, and projected our private messages—and my declaration that I was withdrawing my family's investment—onto the giant screen.

Evan's smile froze.

He gritted his teeth and hissed under his breath, "Have you lost your mind? You're going to destroy the company's entire financial chain over something this trivial?"

"My company's affairs are none of your concern, Mr. Sullivan."

In front of everyone, I tore our marriage alliance agreement to pieces.

Then I turned and walked toward the man sitting alone in the corner—a world-class cardiac surgeon whose family had threatened to suspend him from work if he refused to attend their matchmaking arrangement.

"Reid."

I raised my glass, meeting his utterly unreadable eyes.

"You need a wife who won't give you trouble. I need a ready-made husband. I'll put up the money. Let's make this marriage happen. City Hall opens tomorrow morning. Are you brave enough to go with me?"

Chapter 1
"Mr. Sullivan, move. You're blocking my fiancée's way out." Reid rose to his feet. His long, well-defined fingers slipped between mine, lacing our hands together. Evan finally snapped out of his shock. "Sophie, have you lost your mind? You're trying to force me to back down by dragging some broke doctor who's being pressured into marriage into this? You really think this pathetic little push-and-pull game will work?" "Evan, don't blame Sophie." Nina immediately wrapped herself around Evan's arm. "Sophie, please don't gamble your entire future just because you're angry." I looked at the two of them, and a wave of nausea rose in my stomach. Before I could say anything, Evan's mother suddenly charged out of the crowd and pointed straight at my face. "Sophie Grant! Who do you think you are, making a scene on the Sullivan family's turf? If my son hadn't been kind enough to keep your pathetic little company afloat, you wouldn't even be able to afford a meal right now!" Whispers spread through the room. Most of the guests looked at me with barely concealed amusement, as though they were watching a joke unfold. Reid never let go of my hand. Instead, he calmly slipped off his perfectly tailored suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders. Then he lifted his eyes and gave the emerald-green jade necklace around Mrs. Sullivan's neck a cold once-over. "Mrs. Sullivan, that custom-made necklace you're wearing is worth twelve million dollars. Ms. Grant paid for it at Sotheby's last month." Reid's gaze shifted to the Patek Philippe on Evan's wrist. "And that watch on Mr. Sullivan's wrist? A limited-edition piece she had someone bring back from Geneva for him. Even this hotel where you're holding today's engagement party is owned by Ms. Grant. Living off your wife to this extent... The Sullivan family really has opened my eyes." Mrs. Sullivan's face turned purple. She instinctively covered the necklace around her neck. Furious, Evan pointed at Reid. "What the hell would a doctor living on a salary know? Those are assets we exchanged between husband and wife! Sophie, if you dare walk out that door with him today, don't bother crawling back to me tomorrow. Even if you kneel and beg, I will never marry you!" I didn't waste another word on him. I slipped my arm through Reid's and walked out of the ballroom without looking back. ***** The next morning, at 8 o'clock. I parked my car in front of City Hall. The moment I opened the door, I spotted an unwelcome figure. Evan was standing on the steps with Nina, who was dressed to perfection. When he saw me approaching, the gloom on his face began to lift. "You've had all night to cool off. I know you were just too proud to back down yesterday. I came here personally to give you a way out. Come inside and let's get the marriage certificate." I recoiled from Evan's outstretched hand. "Evan Sullivan, do you not understand plain English?" His expression darkened. "Sophie! I already lowered myself enough to come looking for you. What more do you want? That broke doctor isn't even here today. How long are you planning to keep this ridiculous act going?" "Who says I'm not here?" Reid stepped out, a number ticket in his hand, his long legs carrying him toward us. "Mrs. Hayes, it's our turn. Let's go to the ceremony room." Ten minutes later, I walked out of City Hall holding a freshly issued marriage certificate, still warm in my hands. I held it up in front of Evan. "Look closely. I'm already married. Mr. Sullivan, remember to call me Mrs. Hayes from now on."
