CURTAINS FALL
'"Its a good day, don't you think ". "The sky is blue, the birds are chirping, and the market is noisier than ever" "Buy your fish oooh, Oga commot for road, shut up!!" "Nope!, it's a terrible day, again Jeremy's trip to the market is never a fun one(for him at least). Growing up in the busy town of yenagoa should have least made him get used to this. "It gets more difficult with each passing day" Well he can complain all he wants but he has to do it. Jeremy Layefa was born to the family of the Rev Sylvanus Layefa and Mrs Smith. He was of average height and he was not fat with a cute and captivating smile Being the second to last child and the first son, he felt a sense of responsibility arising within him. His dad works as a full-time pastor in Church of God mission so he's always transfered to different parts of the nation. Living with his mom and siblings in Bayelsa, Jeremy has come to accept his families way of life. loosing a game landed him on market duty today; which is one thing this teenager hates the most. The Swalli market is the biggest market in Yenagoa, "This won't be easy, Fish, meat , pepper, ahhh; I'm gonna die!!!" He went up and down the market like a scout on a scavenger hunt looking for the various ingredients for the Banga soup they were going to make. It took him hours but he finally got all the ingredients and was heading home. "People of God, I'm back from the market" (THE LAYEFAS OFTEN REFER TO EACH OTHER AS 'PEOPLE OF GOD) The day was running fast and faster without delay. The exhausted Jeremy sat down on the couch, perhaps to watch a movie. He reached for the remote and immediately, the light went off. "Like seriously, what next?" He relaxed on the couch and thought about some stuff. He was traveling to school soon after gaining admission to study Dentistry at the University of calabar. How would he face this new aspect of his life?, he wondered. He has never been to calabar before and he would really miss home. "I wish things would go back to the way they were pere I'm not ready for this" He really wanted this and did not want it at the same time (what a confused soul) As he lay, they brought back the light. It was his last week at home and he was supposed to go see his dad before traveling to Calabar; he had to make the best of it. "Mmmh, this soup is so good, more please "No finish am ooh, I never chop since morning and I suffer for that market before I buy the ingredients ooo abeg" He spent his last week at home with his mum and siblings happily and then traveled to Omoku; Where his father was currently working. He didn't know what to feel about his dad's job. His friends often should teased him calling him 'pastor pikin' which had no effect on him. He knew his dad loved his job and so he did his best to live up to his father's expectations. The house was very big, he saw his dad in his office when he got to Omoku before they both went home. Although his dad was not always around, Jeremy had a good bond with his dad and wanted to make him proud more than anything. They talked about alot that night. "Jere, listen to the words I tell you today for they will help you tomorrow. As you're going to that school, know that you have nobody. Me and your mother have tried our best to raise you up to this point. We are not perfect but we have God on our side that is why we were able to reach the stage we are now. please when you get there, remember where you come from. Don't go and do anything that will bring shame to you and to us. study your books and be good example. This are the few words I have for you" "At this rate, I'm gonna be late for my trip (They talked for another one hour) As he entered the bus to Port Harcourt, memories of home began to play in his head. He felt happy, sad and emotions he couldn't explain. What does the future hold for Jeremy Layefa? Rainy days and lonely nights Feels like I'm loosing time No where else to go so I Chase the fading lights Upon night till dawn Wonder how many days have gone Will papa take me back If I wanna go HOME (Johnny Drille: Home) He finally arrived in calabar at about 5:00pm. He received a warm welcome from the zonal coordinator of the church of God mission in Cross River state, Calabar. "You're welcome to unical Jeremy. Don't worry, your stay here will be pleasant. you will be living in our hostel with some students who are there. just endeavor to study hard and make sure you meet me if you're having any difficulties okay?" "Thank you sir " The hostel was a nice comfortable space. It was not too big but he was not expecting something really amazing; compared to his expectations, this is heaven and he also liked the idea of living in a church. Although he did not like the idea of living with people he did not know. Jeremy was although very kind, he was extremely shy and found it hard to talk to people. He only felt free at home and now he has to live with other students Well it can't be helped. I should be grateful I even have a place to stay for free, but I'm not gonna stay here forever As he was talking to himself, a guy with light glowing skin and a very shady look as if he just won a lottery walked in and gave a faint smile. He walked like he knew Jeremy and put his hand on his head and welcomed Jeremy. His name was Sunday Eket, he was Jeremy's new roomate.Unlike Jeremy, Sunday talked alot and bombarded him with questions. Things were starting to settle and Jeremy had to start his school journey. The next morning, Jeremy and Sunday went to Unical. It was more than he imagined; the roads were so wide, with people everywhere, the buildings in red and yellow caught his eyes, so did the statues. They headed straight to the Unical Microfinance Bank tompay his acceptance fee, school fees and other expenses.Jeremy was grateful for Sunday's help, Sunday in the other hand was enjoying the whole thing. After the transactions were made, he took Jeremy to different places in the campus and taught him alot. Jeremy was fascinated by this new world he had stepped in and wanted to explore even more With the help of Sunday, they were able to locate the Faculty of Dentistry (i.e Jeremy's department. He was able to meet a few of his course mates and get their lectures and their activities in the department. After so much done, they decided to get something to eat. Sunday took Jeremy to Malabor square where they had Afang soup; it was Jeremy's first time eating it but he loved it. MESSAGE FROM DADDY Hello Jere, how are you doing, how is the calabar. I'm happy that you've settled my phone is speaker is bad so I cannot call you, I'll repair it tomorrow. I just called to know how you're doing, take care Jeremy had begun his university life. It was not really how he felt it would be even though the thought of home still filled his head. He was able to make a few friends in his department and had started his lectures. A new life in a new town and a new adventure has just begun Hiding within the shadows Hundreds of them all over the globe will his fate bring him to them?
