The sun came what seemed like to quickly. I pried my eyes open and couldn’t help but think once again about when I was going to meet my mate or if i would ever meet him. What would be be like? Would he be kind? How would he look? Thousands of questions came to me but I quickly pushed the thoughts aside as I dressed and met with the others to go on the hunt.
It was also my friend Kele’s first hunt. We have grown up together and he is like a brother to me and is my best friend. I met up with him and the others and brush up against his shoulder playfully. “Hey Kele, you ready? First hunt!” He giggled and replied “born ready Nita” we share smile and wait for the elders to pray over us all before heading out.
I spoke to my wolf Koko asking if she was ready for our first shift. “I’m ready Nita are you?” “Let’s do this.” I respond. We all quickly shift and all of a sudden all eyes are on me. I hear everyone whispering and I think something is wrong with us. “Koko is something wrong with us?” I put my head down. “Nothing is wrong with us. They are just surprised.” I make my way over to a nearby stream and look down to see my reflection. “We……we are beautiful” I stutter. I have thick dark black fur and eyes so blue they almost glow. And I’m huge! My wolf is as big as my dads!
I turn back and we are ready to go. Everyone still amazed by my wolf we head off into the woods to begin our hunt. Usually hunts last around three or four days.
We run for what seems like hours until we reach a small clearing In the woods.
“ We will make camp here.” Tyee, the leader of the group announced. We all settled in and set up camp and by the time we were done we built a fire and it was time to eat. We all sat around the fire and joked and laughed and listened to the older hunters tell stories of previous hunts.
The next morning we all got up before the sun woke and shifted heading into the woods to start the hunt officially. We came across a heard of deer and everyone stopped and watched. “Nita this is your chance.” Tyee looked to me and said. I crotched down stalking the deer as they grazed. Slowly I got closer and attacked taking down a large buck. Everyone quickly gathered around me and I look to Kele to see the biggest smile on his face. “Now you have to eat his heart” it was tradition to eat the heart of your first kill. I gladly do so as everyone cheers and chants.
