Billionaire Ex Husband Second Chance
The room was adorned with delicate candlelight, casting a warm glow that danced along the walls. Imogen sat at the table, her heart pounding as she anxiously awaited the return of her husband, Ethan. Tonight was supposed to be a celebration of their love, the commemoration of five years of marriage and most importantly, the first time they’d gave dinner together in over a year.
Imogen couldn’t help but feel excited. She had dolled herself up more than usual for the occasion, adorning an elegant red evening gown and allowed her hair to flow free rather than the usual updo she carried.
She had prepared the meals herself and even went as far as picking out a present that she was sure Ethan would like.
She did all this just to express the love she has harbored Towards him for years. She was more than sure that tonight was going to be the best, Yet, deep down, she sensed that something was amiss.
As of late Ethan had been behaving oddly. He’d go out early in the morning and return late at dusk, covered in on constant perfume that irked Imogen. And each time she asked him about it, his reply was simply.
“Mind your own business.” He’d say to her before storming off to his separate room.
Although that was his usual behavior, Imogen could sense something different about him, something she couldn’t quite place a finger on.
Feeling her mind wander, the brunette shook her head in a bid to gain concentration.
Perhaps she was just being sensitive and overthinking stuff, she convinced herself and reached for her glass of wine.
Just as she was about to take another sip from her glass, the front door creaked open. Imogen’s heart skipped a beat as Ethan entered, his usual tired look absent from his face. Her breath unknowingly caught in her throat, and she couldn’t help but notice the stack of papers clutched tightly in his hands.
“Ethan… Welcome.” She greeted him earnestly trying her best to push away the bad thoughts as he approached her.
This was meant to be their night, she wasn’t going to allow anything spoil it; she chanted those words in her head over and over again as Ethan finally stopped in front of her and tossed the paper in his hand on the table.
Pa!
Imogen stared at the brown coated document that Ethan had flung on the table. She blinked her eyes once, twice and finally for the third time before fixing her gaze on Ethan’s towering form as he stood.
“What is this?” She asked calmly, trying her best to remain her composure.
“Let’s get a divorce, Imogen.” Ethan announced.
Imogen’s eyes widened in surprise and confusion.
“What?” She questioned breathlessly.
Out of all the things that she could have thought to happen today, getting a divorce proposal from her husband surely hadn’t been one of them.
“I said let’s get a divorce.” Ethan repeated without a single ounce of remorse in his voice. “Those are the divorce documents, all you need to do is sign them.” He told.
Imogen couldn’t believe her ears. She stayed frozen, staring at Ethan as he stared back down at her, unfazed by his hurtful actions.
How could he do something like this? And to top it all up, it had to be in the day of their anniversary, the day she had out so much effort into to make sure that it turned out perfectly!
Imogen felt her heart shatter. Why… With trembling hands she reached for the papers, even though her heart screamed for this to be some sort of twisted nightmare.
“Why, Ethan? Why do you want a divorce?” she finally managed to whisper, her voice laced with hurt. Her mind raced, desperately searching for answers. Was it something she had done? Was her love for him not enough? Had she not been a good wife these past five years?
Ethan took a deep breath, his voice clear and unmistakable, “The person I love woke up from her coma today, Imogen.” His words hung heavily in the air, and an overwhelming realization crashed into Imogen like a tidal wave.
If there was one person that Ethan loved the mist, then it’s Kayle. However she had gone into a vegetative state five years ago after her accident.
But now she was awake…and Ethan wanted to be with Kayle…not her.
Those last two words tore through her chest, piercing her heart with an indescribable pain. Her best friend, the person she confided in and trusted with her deepest secrets—turns out to be the very person Ethan loves. She couldn’t comprehend the betrayal that ensued.
A solitary tear escaped Imogen’s eye, tracing a path down her cheek. She wiped it away quickly, refusing to allow Ethan the satisfaction of witnessing her break.
These past five years, despite all she had endured…all the Humiliation from his mother and hate from his sister, she had never not for once cried.
That was because she knew that Ethan didn’t like cry babies. She had bottled up her emotions and acted strong all because she looked him…but did he ever love her?
That question nagged at her mind, and before she could stop herself, Imogen had already opened her mouth and asked,
“Did you ever love me...Ethan?” she asked, her voice shaking ever so slightly.
Ethan’s gaze met hers, and Imogen searched his eyes for any sign of compassion, any remnants of the love she thought they could share or at least grow to share.
However all she found was nothingness and his response cut deeper than any blade ever could. “No, Imogen. I never loved you. The only reason I married you was because my family felt indebted to yours. It was a favor—a cold transaction.”
The weight of his words pressed upon her, threatening to shatter whatever strength she had left. Imogen took a deep breath, fighting back the flood of tears threatening to spill forth. She refused to let Ethan witness her vulnerability any further.
Just as she was about to summon up the strength to confront him, a shrill ringtone broke through the heavy silence. Ethan’s phone came to life, disrupting the moment with a cruel twist of fate. He hurriedly answered, his face turning pale with each passing second.
Imogen watched Ethan’s expression change from despair to panic. The voice on the other end relayed news that shattered his heart into even small fragments. Kayle’s condition had suddenly deteriorated.
Although she had just woken up, her condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse just a few hours after he had left and now she was in a critical situation.
Without a second thought, Ethan abruptly turned around and rushed out the door, leaving Imogen alone, left to grapple with her shattered heart and unanswered questions.
As the sound of the door slamming shut echoed in the room, Imogen was consumed by a whirlwind of emotions. The tears that she had fought so hard to hide cascaded down her cheeks uncontrollably. The pain engulfed her, and she questioned whether Ethan was ever worth the agony she now endured.
