I, Jacob of the Moonlight Pack, reject you, Bella, as my mate. My heart dropped. Everywhere was silent after everyone gave a huge gasp. After a second, whispering started; they murmured. I went still, like my whole body had shut down. I dropped to my knees, my hand holding my chest and tears falling down my cheeks. “Please……” I begged. FLASHBACK TO THE BEGINNING OF THE DAY Bella’s POV Today is my awakening. I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life. Today, I not only awaken my wolf, but I’m also chosen by my mate. Alpha Jacob. My crush since I was 5 years old. But today, he becomes my mate. I was so excited for the test today. I smiled as I walked toward the testing grounds with Anna beside me. My best friend forever. “Are you nervous?” Anna asked. “A little,” I admitted, squeezing her hand. She laughed. “You’ll be fine.” The testing ceremony began shortly after we arrived. One by one, the young wolves stepped forward and completed each stage of the test. When it was my turn, I stepped forward. I tried. I gave everything I had. But my body refused to cooperate. My legs trembled, my breathing became heavier, and no matter how hard I pushed myself, I couldn’t keep up. The whispers began. “She’s struggling again.” “Of course she is. She has always been weak.” I clenched my fists. I couldn’t fail. Not today. Not when Jacob was watching. I looked toward him. He stood among the other pack members, watching the test with a serious expression. His presence gave me enough strength to continue. Finally, I completed the test. I was exhausted, but I had made it. Then came the final stage. The awakening. Anna stepped forward first. She closed her eyes. Everywhere was silent. A moment later, her body shifted. A huge black wolf stood where she had been. The crowd erupted into cheers. I smiled. I was genuinely happy for her. Then, it was my turn. Everyone stared at me as I took every step forward. I took a deep breath to calm my pounding heart. I closed my eyes and silently prayed to my ancestors. Please….. Let me be strong. I felt something inside me stir. Then, I transformed. I opened my eyes and looked down at myself. White fur. Small paws. A body much smaller than the other awakened wolves. The cheers disappeared. Silence. Then someone laughed. “She’s tiny!” Everyone started laughing. “She couldn’t even transform into a mature wolf.” The laughing continued. I quickly transformed back into human form, covering myself as I tried to hold back my tears, too embarrassed to stay in my wolf form. I searched for Anna. She wasn’t beside me anymore. She was standing behind Jacob. I frowned. “Anna?” She didn’t answer. I looked at Jacob. “Jacob…” He didn’t smile. Something suddenly felt wrong. I stepped toward them. Everyone began gathering around us. I was confused. I didn’t understand. I was supposed to stay beside Jacob. I…… I was about to speak. “I, Jacob of the Moonlight Pack, reject you, Bella, as my mate,” Jacob spoke, looking at me with a cold expression. My entire world stopped. I looked at Jacob in shock. Anna wrapped her hands tightly around Jacob’s arm. Everyone gasped, then started murmuring. “W….why…” I said with a shaky voice. My heart was trembling. My body was cold. “No…..” I stumbled backwards before falling to my knees. “Please…” Tears streamed down my face. “Why?” Jacob said nothing. I looked toward Anna. My best friend. The person I thought would stand beside me. Instead, she smiled. Then she laughed. I stared at her. “Anna…?” She walked toward me and crouched down. “You really thought an Alpha like Jacob would choose you?” My heart broke even more. “What are you talking about?” She leaned closer. “I was never your friend.” I froze. She glanced at Jacob before looking back at me. “You were always so busy training, trying to become strong enough for him.” Her smile widened. “Meanwhile, I was getting closer to him.” My breathing stopped. “Getting closer…?” Anna laughed softly. “I enjoyed every moment of it.” I looked at Jacob. He didn’t deny it. That was when I realized the truth. I hadn’t only lost my mate. I had lost my best friend too. And she had been betraying me all along. “Loser!” “Pathetic!” “Look at her!” The crowd’s voices surrounded me. I covered my face as tears continued falling. Then, Jacob spoke. “Bella, you are hereby banished from the Moonlight Pack.” I slowly lowered my hands. “Banished…?” “This is no longer your home.” I stared at him in disbelief. My home. My family. My mate. My best friend. Everything I had ever known was being taken away from me. Two pack members walked toward me. I stood slowly. My legs felt weak, but I forced myself to walk. Every step away from the pack felt like I was leaving everything I had ever known behind. When I reached the border of the Moonlight Pack, I stopped and looked back one last time. This had been my home. Now, I wasn’t welcome here anymore. I didn’t know where I was going. I only knew that I couldn’t stay. So I walked into the darkness alone. I didn’t beg anymore As I walked away, I heard Anna laughing behind me. I didn’t look back. I couldn’t. I had no idea where I would go. No food. No money. No home. I walked until my legs could no longer carry me. Then I collapsed. As darkness surrounded me, I kept replaying everything that had just happened. But one question remained in my mind. Why was my wolf different?
