Chapter One
Night At Rome
Vivian's POV
"You're not from here, are you?" His voice enclosed me and drew me in with its smooth softness.
The man who had just sat down next to me at the bar had dark, penetrating eyes, so I looked up from my glass of wine to meet his. I had to rapidly tell myself to breathe as my heart skipped a beat. "Is it that obvious?" I inquired in an attempt to sound happy and funny.
His lips curled slowly and deliberately in a smile that suggested danger and secrets. "There's something about your attitude. You appear to be... unusual.
I c****d my head to observe him. His features were keen, his jaw was sculpted, and he was gorgeous, almost devastatingly so. Although his well-tailored suit exuded riches, there was also a sense of control and authority. "How about you? Are you from this area?
"Born and raised," he said, maintaining eye contact with me. "But even in a city as old as Rome, you still stand out."
My cheeks began to flush a little. I swirled the red liquid in my glass and returned my focus to my beverage. I whispered to myself, more than to him, "I needed a change of scenery," though.
"Running from something?" His inquiry struck me like a sledgehammer despite its gentleness. He was able to see through me.
"Maybe," I said in a whisper. "Or maybe I'm just looking for something I haven't found yet."
As though he understood, he nodded. "Sometimes, we all are."
Not unpleasant, but full of unsaid words, silence fell between us. Curious about the man who appeared to see right through my carefully crafted façade, I glanced at him.
He broke The silence by saying, "I'm Alessandro," and extending his hand.
"Vivian." I felt a shock go up my arm as I took his hand, which was warm and firm.
"Vivian," he said again, seemingly relishing my name as he rolled it off his tongue. "Beautiful name for a beautiful woman."
I grinned as I experienced a certain calmness in his company. "Thank you."
The bartender gave us another round of drinks, and we carried on our chat, which was flowing naturally. When he asked about my life, I offered him a diluted version, leaving out the details about my family's mafia connections and the oppressive expectations that had forced me to escape to Rome.
Alessandro was likewise mysterious, revealing just enough to keep me interested but not enough to satiate my inquisitiveness.
Minutes flew by, and as the night became darker, the bar became quieter. I connected with Alessandro in a way that was both thrilling and frightening.
A shadow passed over us just as I was starting to feel that the night was too ideal. A few steps away, I turned to see a man with a stern expression on his face and narrowed eyes.
"Vivian Hart?" The man had a heavy accent and a gruff voice.
Alessandro's body tensed instantly, and I saw his subtle protective gesture as his palm moved to the small of my back.
"Who’s asking?" Alessandro's voice lacked the warmth it had possessed only seconds before.
With a sly smile, the man produced a phone and displayed a photo of me. "People are trying to find you. Powerful individuals.
My blood froze. They had located me.
I took a trembling breath and tried not to panic. My thoughts were racing, trying to come up with ways to get away without being noticed. Fear twisted in my gut, but I was grounded by Alessandro's steady, quiet presence.
"Is that so?" There was a menacing edge to Alessandro's measured speech. "What do these people want with her?"
The man looked from one of us to the other and sneered. "She is aware of her actions. She can't run indefinitely.
Alessandro's eyes narrowed as he stood taller than the man. "You're not correct. I don't like threats, and Vivian is here with me."
Terrified, but not enough to give up entirely, the man took a step back. "Friend, this isn't your battle. Get out of here before you get hurt.
Alessandro remained unflinching. "Try me."
The tension between them grew, and my heartbeat accelerated. I had to step in before things got out of hand. I touched Alessandro's arm and felt the tense muscles under his suit. "Don't worry, Alessandro. Let's simply go."
When his eyes met mine, they softened, but their resolve did not waver. "Are you sure?"
Despite the knot of terror in my chest, I nodded. "Yes. Let's leave."
He glared at the man one last time and then at me. "Come on."
We hurried out of the pub and into the refreshing night air. My heart was racing as I relived the meeting. I was meant to be concealed here, safe. But they had discovered me.
"Who was that?" Alessandro's query, in a soft yet powerful voice, pierced my mind.
Uncertain of how much to divulge, I hesitated. "Someone I hoped I’d never see again."
His demeanour was unreadable as he observed me for a time. "Vivian, we must speak. Somewhere secure.
Unable to argue, I nodded. "Your place?"
He called a cab without saying anything more, and we headed to his place. With the weight of what had just transpired bearing down on me, the trip was quiet.
Alessandro occupied an opulent penthouse that exuded riches and authority. He led me into the living area and seated me on a soft leather couch as we entered.
He sat across from me and urged, "Tell me everything," with a penetrating glance.
Knowing that there was no going back now, I inhaled deeply. "My family members are engaged in a risky industry. I ran because I wanted to get out.
He seems unsurprised. "And they want you back."
I nodded, my eyes threatening to well up with tears. "Yes. They will not give up until they locate me.
Leaning forward, Alessandro's face was solemn. "Vivian, you are not alone in this. I'll assist you.
Despite being consoling, his remarks sparked a fresh rush of anxiety. Could I rely on him? And would I put him at risk as a result if I did?
While sitting in Alessandro's living room, I relived the events of the previous evening. The pandemonium I had left behind stood in sharp contrast to the luxury all around me. There was something about Alessandro that made me want to believe in him even if I wasn't sure I could trust him completely.
"Why are you doing this?" With hardly more than a whisper, I asked.
His eyes grew softer as he gazed at me. "Because I have witnessed what it's like to feel stuck and without a way out. Nobody is worthy of that.
I was somewhat aback by his response, but it also revealed a side of him that he had not yet revealed. Alessandro was more than just a rich stranger; he was sensitive to loss and suffering.
I said, "Thank you," with a glimmer of hope.
"Come on," he said while getting up. "You ought to get some sleep. Tomorrow, we will determine the next course of action.
I was appreciative of his generosity and followed him to a guest room. I kept thinking about what was ahead as I lay in bed. I didn't feel alone for the first time in a long time, but the risk was still very much present.
My phone was vibrating when I woke up the following morning. The message, "You can't hide forever, Vivian," made my heart sink.
Despite my fear, I was unable to contain myself. I had to maintain my strength, not only for myself but also for everyone I may inflict harm to.
Alessandro was already up and holding a cup of coffee when I rushed outside. As soon as he saw my pale face, he realized something was up.
"They texted me," I displayed t
he message to him.
He clenched his jaw. "We need to act fast."
