[Elara’s POV]
I stared at my reflection in the massive, gold-rimmed mirror, completely unable to recognize the girl staring back at me.
Gone was the dirty, oversized t-shirt I used to wear to scrub the packhouse floors. Gone was the smell of bleach and old pine. After Cora, the head Omega, had drawn me a bath filled with warm water and essential oils, my bruises had already started to fade. The healing properties of the water were unlike anything I had ever experienced.
Now, I was dressed in a breathtaking, floor-length emerald green gown made of the softest silk. It hugged my curves gently and flowed like water around my ankles. Cora had brushed my tangled hair until it fell in soft, shiny waves down my back.
"You look beautiful, my Luna," Cora said softly, standing behind me with a proud smile.
"I look... different," I whispered, reaching up to touch the soft fabric of the dress. It was the exact shade of Alpha Kael’s eyes when he wasn't angry. A blush crept up my neck at the thought of him.
"You look like a Queen," Cora corrected me gently. "Come. You shouldn't stay locked in this room. The castle is your home now. You should see it."
Despite the anxiety fluttering in my stomach, I nodded. For the first time in my life, I didn't have to hide. I walked out of the bedroom and into the grand hallway. The Blood Moon castle was a masterpiece of dark wood, high vaulted ceilings, and massive windows that overlooked a sprawling, beautiful valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
As I walked down the grand staircase, I noticed the pack members. Warriors, Omegas, and elders were going about their day. But the moment they saw me, everything stopped.
I froze, my old instincts screaming at me to lower my head and apologize for taking up space. I waited for the sneers. I waited for someone to yell at me to get back to cleaning.
Instead, a massive warrior with scars across his face stopped in his tracks. He immediately dropped to one knee, bowing his head deeply, baring his neck in the ultimate sign of submission.
"Good morning, Luna," he rumbled respectfully.
Beside him, two women carrying baskets of fresh linen stopped and did the same, curtsying low. "Blessings to our Queen," they murmured in unison.
My breath hitched. They weren't faking it. I could feel the genuine respect and awe radiating from them through the pack link. They didn't see a weak Omega from a rival pack. They saw their Alpha's chosen mate. They saw me.
A sudden, intense warmth bloomed in the center of my chest. It wasn't my own emotion. It was the mate bond. It thrummed with a powerful, dark satisfaction and a fierce, overwhelming protectiveness. He was coming back.
I reached the bottom of the stairs just as the massive front doors of the castle swung open.
Alpha Kael stepped inside. He brought the freezing winter chill in with him, his dark coat dusted with snow. He looked dangerous, wild, and incredibly powerful. The scent of pine and dark chocolate hit me like a physical wave, making my inner wolf purr loudly in my mind.
He paused, his broad shoulders stiffening as his gaze locked onto me. The bustling hallway went completely silent. No one dared to breathe.
I watched as the lethal, angry aura surrounding him instantly melted away. The glowing red of his eyes faded, replaced by that breathtaking, deep forest green. He looked at me as if I was the only light in his dark world.
He crossed the distance between us in long, purposeful strides. I didn't back away. For some reason, I wasn't afraid of him. Not anymore.
Kael stopped inches from me. He slowly reached out, his large, rough hand gently cupping my cheek. His thumb brushed against my cheekbone, his touch surprisingly tender for a man who had just returned from a warpath.
"You look breathtaking, Elara," he whispered, his deep voice vibrating through my core.
"What happened?" I asked softly, searching his eyes. "Did you... did you hurt them?"
Kael’s jaw clenched slightly, but his eyes remained soft as he looked at me. "I kept my promise, little wolf. I didn't kill him, because I didn't want your reign to start with death. But I broke his pride, his arm, and his future. The Silver Moon Pack will never, ever look down on you again."
Tears welled up in my eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of pain. They were tears of overwhelming relief. Someone had fought for me. Someone had defended me.
"Thank you," I whispered, leaning my face into his warm palm.
A possessive growl rumbled in his chest. Before I could process what was happening, Kael leaned down and pressed his lips softly against my forehead. The touch sent fireworks exploding through my veins, sealing the bond that Lucas had so foolishly thrown away.
"You never have to thank me, Elara," Kael murmured against my skin. "You are my Queen. And this is only the beginning."
