Chapter 1
As I make my way across the water in the small little boat, I start to breathe a little easier. The sun was just rising over the mountains and all I could think about was "I Made it." Early this morning, I snuck from my room and out of the castle to make my way to the Academy before anyone would wake up.
As the princess of Vaelora, this was frowned upon. My father did not believe in women fighting, let alone a princess, but with the darkness coming I wanted every advantage I could have. My powers would only get me so far.
"Ouch" I yelped as I was shoved back from the railing of the boat, where a frame now leaned over the edge. She turned towards me with her light brown hair and green eyes "I am so sorry... I don't handle the water very well." She gathered herself back up right and extended her hand. "Hi my names Lorial Winfield, yours?"
"Aurora" was all I gave her. If I gave her my last name, it would be a dead giveaway of who I am. Thankfully, being who I am, I was kept hidden most of my life from the outside kingdom. Which at the time I hated but is now working to my advantage.
"Nice to meet you Aurora." She smiled then looked back out over the water "Are you excited for the bonding ceremony?"
The bonding ceremony happens before you can enter Grand Academy of Aeltharion, This is where the dragons select their riders if they deem them fit and strong enough to join the academy to train being part of the Elite Riders for Kindgom Vaelora or Kingdom Dravakar. The academy falls in the Neutral ground of the realm Aetharion. The kingdoms once had separate schools but with the darkness taking over Kingdom Eryndor, the remaining kingdoms felt it best to bring the schools together in one neutral area to benefit from training and learning together.
There are 7 colors of Dragons Purple, Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, Orange, & Black. Purple for their speed and agility. Blue is known for their love of water. Red for their fire and strength. Green for their love of nature and camouflage in the forest. Yellow for their healing abilities and energy. Orange is known for its endurance and goofy spirit. Lastly Black, who is the rarest of Dragons and little is known of their abilities and likes. They are said to blend with the shadows and have a blue flame. The last Black dragon was seen over 100 years ago. There are myths one is still alive but staying in the dragon land.
"Of course, I am excited, it would be an honor to be chosen."
"I hope I get a Green or Yellow. I hear they are both more calm than the others and have healing abilities." Lorial smiled. Lorial goes on about how she is from a small village in Vaelora close to the coast. She just turned 18 and has 2 younger siblings.
As I see the dock approaching , I can't help but wonder if my parents have noticed me missing yet. I knew my father will be furious I left the castle. But i am more than just a princess for him to give me off in some arranged marriage. I heard the whispers in the castle and talk of a marriage to someone on another continent. If I can just bound to a dragon before he finds me then there is nothing he can do.
As the boat lands at the dock all 20 of us are ushered off this small boat, along with the 4 other boats that were following. There are all kinds of people here from Vaelora. However I don't yet see any from Dravakar, they must be landing more south on the island. Most people from Vaelora have Blonde/light brunette hair and blue or green eyes, where, as if you are from Dravakar your hair is a much darker brown some black with blue and brown eyes.
They lead us towards the bonding grounds just North of the school, here we huddle and wait for directions. About a half hour later the 200 students from Dravakar appear. They are all dressed in red and black and following one male. He's tall, dark shaggy hair that lands just above his ears, and muscular frame. From here I can see a tattoo that swirls from his neck and down his arm. He holds himself high and with importance.
"Who is that?" Lorail whispers with her mouth open and chin hanging down.
"I am not sure but he seems important. See how they all follow him like hes the leader" I respond. This man is screams danger but there is no denying he is the most gorgeous male I've ever seen.
"Students, we all welcome you to the bonding ceremony." Boomed an older man from the front of the crowd. "Some of you will bond a Dragon today, some of you will not be so lucky and will be returning home to your kingdoms tonight. Each of you will enter the forest behind me where you will venture and if your lucky find a dragon who wishes to bond with you. You will each go in a alone and will have till late afternoon to find your bonded. Some of you may even find yourself unlucky and Dragon food if you piss one off. Good Luck to you all."
The next thing I know I am standing in the middle of the forest all alone. I glance around, it's hard to see with all the tree coverage blocking out the sun ahead. I continue to walk through the woods climbing over rocks and through brush, it seems like hours have passed. I see a blue dragon swimming in the lake, it looks over me slowly and takes off in the opposite direction. I continue walking through the woods getting deeper and darker into the brush. It's got to be afternoon by now, and I'm running out of time.
Suddenly I hear a growl. I look around, barely able to see anything. It goes silent again. Maybe I was just hearing things. But no, I hear it again, but from behind me, I whirl around and come face to face with a large black dragon with blue eyes, and it's looking at me like I'm Lunch.
