Lina pressed her back against the cool metal of her locker, laughing with her best friend, Jennifer. The final bell of the day had rung, releasing a torrent of students into the halls of Crestwood High. Lina's day had been a blur of classes and homework assignments, but she always found solace in Jennifer's company. They shared everything—dreams, secrets, and the unspoken hope that high school was just a stepping stone to a brighter future.
"See you tomorrow, Lina!" Jennifer called as she headed toward her bus.
"Yeah, see you, Jen!" Lina replied, waving with a smile.
The walk home was usually uneventful, but tonight felt different. The air had a heavy stillness, and the usual chatter of birds was conspicuously absent. Lina pulled her jacket tighter around herself as she took a shortcut through a narrow alley, her thoughts drifting to the pile of homework waiting for her.
Suddenly, a shadow fell across her path. She looked up to see Derek, the school's star athlete and one of the most popular guys at Crestwood High. He was flanked by his three cronies, their expressions unreadable but their presence menacing.
"Hey, Lina," Derek said, his voice slick with an unsettling charm. "Where you heading in such a hurry?"
"Home," Lina replied, her voice wavering slightly. "Excuse me."
As she tried to step past them, Derek grabbed her arm. Panic surged through her, and she yanked her arm away, her eyes darting around for an escape.
"Don't be like that," Derek sneered, his grip tightening. "We just want to talk."
Before she could scream, Derek's friends closed in, surrounding her. Lina's heart pounded in her chest as she fought to stay calm. She had to find a way out. Summoning all her strength, she stomped on Derek's foot and elbowed the nearest guy in the ribs. The momentary shock was all she needed. Lina broke free and ran, her feet pounding against the pavement.
She didn't stop running until she reached the edge of the forest, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The woods loomed before her, dark and forbidding, but she had no other choice. She plunged into the trees, hoping to lose her pursuers in the thick underbrush.
The forest closed around her like a shroud, and soon she could no longer hear the sounds of the town behind her. The moonlight barely penetrated the dense canopy, casting eerie shadows on the forest floor. Lina's fear grew with each passing minute. She had no idea where she was or how to find her way out.
Branches clawed at her clothes and face as she stumbled deeper into the woods. Every rustle of leaves and snap of twigs made her jump, her imagination conjuring all manner of terrifying creatures lurking in the darkness. Exhausted and disoriented, Lina finally collapsed at the base of a massive oak tree, tears streaming down her face.
Lina’s sobs echoed through the silent forest, her fear and exhaustion finally overwhelming her. Hugging her knees to her chest, she felt utterly alone. The forest seemed to press in on her, its dark shadows hiding countless unseen threats. But as she sat there, crying, she suddenly heard a low, rumbling growl. Her heart stopped, and she looked up, her eyes widening in disbelief.
