Iris West’s POV.
August 3rd. I was officially 3 months pregnant and there was still no sign of my baby bump. Doctor Schwann had assured me that it was normal as long as I and the baby were doing well.
I stared at my reflection in the cracked mirror in the corridor of the servants’ quarters. I have added little weight in the past few days. I barely do any work now and Alpha Kristen has ensured I eat proper meals.
He still amazed me. I always wondered why he was so nice to me. Maybe the guilt of putting me in such a situation was getting to him.
A lot of other things had also changed around the pack house. I had not seen Ms. Felicia in a very long time and Amelia was now the new head of maids.
Everyone now called her Ms. Jones and it was very funny to watch her prance around giving orders and directions on what ought to be done and what not. Everyone seemed to prefer Amelia to Ms. Felicia and the whole atmosphere was more friendly than before.
The security around the pack house had tightened. No one was allowed to leave or enter the pack house unless it was a very serious situation. More servants had been employed to make work easier and curfew had been shifted from 10:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
The Servants thank the Moon goddess daily, for the alpha’s generosity. The pack members were also able to share in this joy as different investments and infrastructures had been established to make their lives easier. In general, things were getting better in the Shadow Fire pack.
Yet, I was the only one to sense that something was seriously off. This thing cannot just happen for no reason, there has to be something behind it. But, who was I to make my thoughts known? Who was I to fault and not appreciate that alpha’s generosity?
Everything felt like a distraction. Like they were set in place to prevent us from seeing the bigger picture. It was a smart move but stupid. If there was really danger, how were we supposed to prepare for what we do not even know about?
Maybe I was just being paranoid, maybe I was just overthinking, but then maybe I was right. There was no point stressing myself over things I could do nothing about. Even if I wanted to speak out my thoughts, no one would listen to me.
I stepped outside and made my way to the pack house. My duty for the day was to mop the floors on the ground floor.
By the time I got there, I met Anne and another maid already mopping the floors. We were four sharing the duty.
“Hey, Iris.” Anne greeted me with a smile on her face, “Helen and I got here early and decided to start. You can decide to wait for Beatrice or just go ahead with your option. We’ve split it into two already. You and Beatrice have the right side.”
“Hello, Anne. Hello Helen.” I greeted them both. “Alright, thanks.”
I picked up a mop and a bucket from the store room and made my way towards the other side of the pack house. I started right away with one-half of the portion.
As I passed near a closed door, I heard some voices speak from inside. I recognized one voice to belong to the alpha but I could not quite place the other one.
“It makes no sense, these letters don’t seem very anonymous to me. It’s like the senders want us to know who they are.” The unknown voice said.
“My thoughts also. Left to me, I’d say they are from other packs trying to take us down.” Alpha Kristen’s voice responded.
“Regulus already said they had captured about three guards from the golden moon pack spying at the borders. That should be enough to confirm our suspicions.” The unknown voice spoke again.
“But you don’t think all this has anything to do with the death of-”
“Hey Iris!” Beatrice's voice resounded from behind me.
I jumped away from the door and quickly turned around. “Hi Beatrice,” I said, trying my best to muster up a convincing smile.
“Sorry I’m late, I had a baby crisis this morning and Uriah had early morning watch duty.” She said while trying to balance her mop and bucket in one hand and her baby in the other.
Beatrice had just been put to bed a few months ago. She had a very handsome son and a lovely mate, Uriah, who was madly in love with her.
“No problem, I just started not long ago. You have the other half.” I said, pointing in the opposite direction from where I stood.
“Okay, let me get to work then. Don’t mind the baby, Uriah will come to get her in a few minutes.”
I continued with my work and finished a few minutes later. As I went to return the materials back to the store, I ran into Amelia in the corridor.
“Hey babes.” She said.
“Hi, how’s work been?” I asked.
I hardly see Amelia around anymore. She has been really busy now with the whole promotion stuff. She looked a bit stressed and I felt very bad for her.
“Just fine. I’m trying my best here and everything seems to be going well.” She said, beaming back at me.
I was so happy she was happy. This promotion gave her the sense of importance she had always longed for. I remember back in the days how she’d always rant about how lucky Ms. Felicia was and how she wanted to be like her someday. Dreams do come true after all.
Amelia wasn’t a maid by choice. Her parents had owed the previous Alpha so much and when they couldn’t pay it back, he had taken everything away from them, including Amelia and her twin brother, Aaron. Her parents died before they could complete their service to the Alpha and they had decided to continue to stay at the pack house since there was nothing to return to.
“Alright, good luck. I’m going to rest now. I feel very tired.” I said as I feigned a yawn. I was really tired of standing.
“Lazy thing, you’ve barely done anything today.” She chuckled.
“Bye, Ms Jones.” I said, laughing as I made my way past her.
“Bye Iris.” She called after me.
On my way back to the servants’ quarters, the conversation I had earlier eavesdropped on replayed in my head.
Maybe I was right after all, something really was really going on. But one thing did not sit right with me. Someone had died and I was surely going to find out who that person was.
