CHAPTER 11

Iris West's POV The first shots were fired without warning, smoke filling the air at once. The soldiers hurried forward trying to avenge their attackers. Several bodies could be seen lying on the ground as the dust, raised by the quick movements of the soldier's feet, settled down. The whole pack was in an uproar, cries of children filling the air, fathers rushing their wives and children to safety and war doctors attending to injured victims who had the chance of making it. There was blood everywhere, a gruesome sight to behold. As the whole event took place, I stood there right in the middle of everything watching the scene unfold. "Iris, get the hell out of there." I heard someone scream. I could not see the person and I was not able to register the voice in my head. The dust had once more risen. I tried to move away but it was all a futile attempt as my body seemed to shut out every command imposed on it. I turned in time to see Ms. Felicia fired a bullet directly at me. Everything seemed to slow down as I watched the bullet advance towards me. I stared in shock, both eyes wide open, unable to do anything else. A powerful force came crashing into me a second later, sending me to the ground. But as I raised my head to see what had happened, I saw the thick silver bullet penetrating right into Alpha Kristen's chest. Everything came to a halt with immediate effect. It was there was a pause in time and all I could do was stare at the bruised body of Alpha Kristen as he lay on the ground, hand clutching his chest and rapidly spewing out blood from his mouth. "No!" I whispered before screaming at the top of my lungs, "Noooooooooo!" I woke up gasping for air. I was drenched in sweat from head to toe, inadvertently soaking the sheets. My eyes quickly scanned the room and the old dry paint chipping away on the walls assured me I was safely in the servants' quarter. I was relieved to realise that I was not standing on a battlefield, neither was there a sight of blood anywhere. "Girl, are you okay?" I looked to my side and saw Amelia standing there with a look of concern and fear written all over her face. I really did not have an answer to her question. Was I okay? I had no idea what the dream meant or how to feel about anything, but if there's one thing I was sure of, it's that I was definitely afraid. "Umm, yeah I'm good." "You sure? You were screaming and shaking viciously. Did something happen in your dream?" She asked. A lot happened, Amelia, a lot. But all I could think of right now was Alpha Kristen's bleeding body. "Hey Amelia, what happened to me? Felicia?" I asked, looking up at her. "Oh, you don't remember?" "I remember the whole market issue but I never saw her again after that," I said. She seemed to hesitate a little before continuing. "The Alpha sent her to the dungeons to punish you." "What? Why?!" "Said something about it not being her place to inflict judgement upon us." "How did I get to Alpha’s room that day?" I hated the way I couldn't remember something but I was honestly surprised at this new information. "He took you there himself." She said and, as if reading my mind, she continued. "And don't ask me why. Everyone is wondering the same thing but they are too scared to ask about it since the Alpha is involved." "I also have no idea," I said, knowing she was going to start pestering me sooner or later with questions. We sat in silence for a few more minutes. Amelia was just staring out of space, probably lost in thoughts while I tried to gather myself together. "Hey," Amelia said, causing me to look up at her. "Are you okay? You've been acting strangely lately." "What do you mean?" "I see you throwing up early in the morning and you sleep a lot more than usual nowadays." She said. I felt a pang of guilt. I hadn't told Amelia about the whole pregnancy stuff and we were supposed to be best friends. "I have something to tell you." I said, looking nervous all of a sudden. I hadn't told anyone about this and I did not know where to start from. "I know, that's why I'm asking." She said, chuckling lightly. I was so glad she was taking this lightly, it made me feel comfortable. Amelia was the most understanding person I have encountered in my life. I began steadily, telling her about the night it all started, the pregnancy, the abortion. I progressed to the deal with doctor Schwann and the market incidence. I shared my views with her on how I felt about the current situation in the pack, what I had overheard and the nightmares. Amelia listened patiently and gave her subtle responses where necessary. I felt like a burden had been lifted off my chest when I was done narrating the whole story. "So I'm going to be an aunt?!" She shrieked. "Keep quiet Amelia!" I snapped back while rolling my eyes. "Oh sorry sorry." She said giggling childishly. Amelia has had baby fever for like forever and I was amazed that she wasn't losing her s**t about anything at all. "But on a serious note, Iris," she said, turning serious at once. "The Alpha is an ass and no one has the right to treat my best friend like that." "Don't forget he's still your alpha." I said, trying to persuade her out of any stupid action she was probably already planning. "I know, I know. That's the only thing keeping me at bay", she said grudgingly. I laughed at her reaction. I truly loved this girl in my life. "You can't tell anyone this though." "Wasn't planning on doing so." I swung my legs off the bed, preparing to stand up. "What were you doing in my room, by the way?" I asked now that everything was over. She got up with a start and I flung my legs back on the bed, startled. "What the hell, Amelia?" "Sorry sorry, it's just that I forgot." She said, the colour draining from her face. "The Alpha sent me to get you."
