Alpha Kristen’s POV.
The packhouse was a very busy place. The warriors were tense and so were my most trusted men. We could sense an attack but we didn't just know when it would happen.
Bruce hasn't been himself since our last personal meeting. I had assured him that nothing would happen to Marrisa and that he could count on the whole pack to be there for him if he needed help.
He's convinced he can do this all on his own, but I feel the whole issue is bigger than it looks. The guards on duty have reported several times to have seen him near the pack borders at night. I think he's planning a solo mission and I have to find a way to talk him out of it.
Marisa and Lucas would be back next week and they'd be staying in the packhouse as well as Bruce. It's the safest thing to do right now.
“Sir,” one of the men at the meeting said, taking me out of my thoughts. “We have just received another letter.”
“Hand it over to the beta,” I said, not the least interested in finding out its content.
In the last few weeks, we have received several of these types of letters, all from different anonymous people. They were all threat letters, narrating boringly about how they'd take over our pack and make us suffer if we didn't agree to some sort of ridiculous negotiations.
This was not an unusual thing as it had been going on for years. Shadow Fire pack was the strongest and greatest pack. This legacy was maintained by my ancestors, who had won every battle upheld against them. They had conquered several packs and made them our alibi.
“Kristen,” Bruce whispered beside me, so only I could hear. “This message is directed to you specifically.”
Taking the letter from him, I ran my eyes over the contents.
"Dear Kristen,
Longest time. You seem to have taken over your father's position now. Hopefully, it wont be a case of 'like father like son'. I remember when you were a little boy. Now I watch you from afar ruling the people.
How time flies, they say. Take care, son.
Sincerely,
Uncle."
I stared in confusion at the caramel-coloured piece of paper. Uncle? I had never known of any brother to my father. In fact, my father was an only child.
"Maybe it's one of your enemies trying to confuse you," Bruce said.
I doubted it. Although there were just a few words written on it, this letter felt very intimate. Like I knew this person. I didn't want to ponder it too much, there were more important issues at hand.
"And with that arrangement, I am sure we have every entrance to the pack secured." Said a buff man at the other end of the table. I had not realised a conversation had been going on.
"Thank you, Regulus." I stood up to shake his hand. "Everyone is dismissed."
Regulus was the chief in command of security and parole. He had excellently held that position for the past twenty years with no fault on his part.
Everyone stood up to leave and I decided to return to my room. I sent Bruce a curt nod from where I stood and turned to make my way out of the board room.
Other occupants seemed not to be aware of the current issues we were facing as they carried on with their daily activities as though they had nothing to worry about.
Well, they did have nothing to worry about, I had everything under control.
I walked in silence, nodding here and there to the servants who greeted me as I crossed paths with them.
Not long after, I could hear faint shouts coming from the kitchen. I made a detour to the kitchen and was surprised at the sight that greeted me on the right of the corridor.
A group of servants stood in one corner, cowering away from the scene in front of them. Ms. Felicia stood tall and menacing over a kneeling figure of a servant whose head was bowed, her back facing me and her front towards them. They had shocked looks on their faces when they saw me but I sent them a challenging glare, daring one of them to speak.
She raised her hand and I heard the loud crack of a whip. It was then I noticed the object in her hands. A few of the servants let out loud gasps.
"You ungrateful little thing, what have I told you all about stealing?" She bellowed, raising her head and casting disgusted looks at all the other servants.
"I didn't steal." The poor figure on her knees, shocked out. A pool of tears was directly below her bent head and her body looked like it had gotten enough beatings to last a lifetime.
"You still have the audacity to lie?!!" Ms. Felicia screamed out. She raised her whip once more in the air and that's when I decided to speak.
"This seems a bit inappropriate." I said, my voice sounding very casual.
Ms. Felicia spun around, almost ripping her head off her neck in the movement. The look on her face was something I would have paid a million bucks to see.
"I thought all cases that required punishment were directed to the alpha or his associates?" I asked, tilting my head slightly. "When did that change to become the responsibility of a lowly servant like you, Ms.?"
I was enjoying every second of this. The look of shame that immediately took over her features was something I never knew I craved for.
Ms. Felicia had always treated the servants poorly. Always acted as though she were in charge. I never really had the time to dwell on her case, but today was her lucky day after all.
"Alpha I-"
"Get on your knees." I interrupted her, keeping my face as straight as possible. "One word from you and you'll be fed to the watch dogs."
Only when she got on her knees was I able to see the kneeling figure properly.
Without having to lift her head, I already knew who it was. Involuntarily, my wolf let out a loud growl.
The other servants jumped back in fear and Ms. Felicia looked like she wanted nothing more but for the ground to open up and swallow her.
The growl must have resounded through the packhouse because Bruce appeared beside me at that exact moment. His eyes shifted from me to Iris' body, kneeling on the floor.
I tried to calm myself down in order to control myself in front of everyone.
" Bruce," I said, taking deep breaths. "Take that woman to the dungeons". I pointed at Ms. Felicia.
I stepped forward, oblivious to everyone's stare, and crouched down before Iris.
"It's okay, I'm here now." I could swear it wasn't me talking, it was my wolf, but I did nothing to shut it out.
Iris lifted her head and stared up into my eyes and with that, she slumped forward against me.
