CHAPTER 7

1493 Words
The heat in the kitchen was suffocating and I felt the urge to throw up. Morning sickness hit like a wave and I ran to the restroom, trying my best to stay unnoticed. I’ve been up since five o’clock and was called into the kitchen to prepare breakfast at exactly 6:30. Although I was already aware, Ms. Felicia informed me that Alpha Kristen instructed I get back to my duties after she had unceremoniously thrown me out of the alpha’s room that night. I’m not sure if it was just me, but my duties had increased by a whole lot. I was working in the kitchen in addition to my former duties. Life was a whole lot harder and the baby didn’t make it any easier. “Iris!” My friend, Amelia, nudged me in my side. Ouch, I seemed to have zoned out. I looked up and saw the head chef staring furiously at me. I quickly looked to Amelia for help. “He says where is your hair cover?” Amelia whispered. I looked at Amelia, she was fully dressed in a white coverage gown, an apron and a chef's cap. Ms. Felicia had probably made sure to give me the worst of what she could find. I had a red apron which had several stains on it and a cap made out of an old napkin. I reached for the top of my head, but the cap wasn’t there. “Sorry sir, I must have left it somewhere when I went to use the restroom.” Some of the other chefs had a look of disgust on their faces, while the head chef shook his head and said something under his breath. I ignored them all and dashed out of the kitchen. I bumped into another maid as I turned the corner. “Watch where you are going you prostitute!” She spat fiercely and threw a dirty piece of clothing at me. Lucky me, it was my missing cap after all. Turns out word travels quickly in the pack house. I picked it up and headed back to the kitchen. I had an appointment with doctor Schwann today. It was the first one since the last treatment and it had to be done in secret. I had not thought of a plan on how I was going to leave the castle, but I knew I had to figure out a way soon. When breakfast was ready, I carried the food up to the alpha’s room. He was having his bath when I got there, so I dropped the food on his bedside table and scurried off, shutting the door quietly behind me. I was off duty till the end of the day after breakfast. This was one of my rare free days. I had enough time to figure out a plan. To my left, I overhead two maids arguing about whose turn it was to go to the store to restock food items. Neither of them wanted to go and was trying to get the other one to agree to go. “I’ll do it.” I said, but it seemed like neither of them had noticed me. I coughed loudly into my fists and they immediately stopped their arguments and focused on me. “I said, I'll do it” I repeated. They both stared at me for a while, then one of them finally spoke “No.” “What do you mean no?” The second one asked the first, with an amused look on her face. “What if she wants to run away with the money and denies ever meeting with us?” “Oh don’t be stupid, Angie” the first girl said, rolling her eyes. “Just give the girl the money since she’s willing to go.” “Fine, but whatever happens, just know you’re responsible.” Angie said. “By the way, her name is Anne.” She fake whispered. Angie looked a bit reluctant but still handed the money over to me. I was so overjoyed that I had finally found a way to leave without any suspicion arising. I went to my room to change out of my kitchen garments and into suitable garments for the journey ahead. After getting the list of items that needed to be purchased from the head chef, I set out. I decided to go see doctor Schwann first and on my way back I’d purchase the items and return easily. I had to trek a good distance because the local bus stop was not near the packhouse at all. I was tired and sweaty by the time I got there. The first bus was about to depart and had only one free seat left. As I was about to alight the bus, I got knocked out of the way. “Get out of my way.” A robust woman with blood, red locs said. She was hurling several bags in her hand and caused a great discomfort to other passengers when she sat down. She glanced at me and turned back to face the front like I wasn’t even there. How rude! In no mood to fight, I walked lazily over to the next bus and sat down. In about twenty minutes, the whole bus was full. I got off at Danko square and immediately spotted the little cottage that had the words “Pack Doctor” scribbled on it. The inside looked much better than the outside. The screams of mothers in labor and cries of children could be heard faintly from the reception. A chill ran down my spine. “Good day, please I would like to see doctor Schwann.” I told the receptionist who was busy typing away on a computer. “Do you have an appointment?” She said, not bothering to look up. “Yes.” “Name, please?” “Amelia Jones” I lied. Of course, I wasn’t going to use my real name. Moreover, this all had to remain a secret. I don’t think Amelia would care that I used her name. We are best friends after all. “Okay, you can go in. Last door to the left.” She said, directing me towards a narrow corridor. I knocked three times and waited for a response. Doctor Schwann opened the door shortly after, wearing a lab coat and his infamous stethoscope on his neck. “Ah, Ms. West. How’ve you been? Please come in.” He said, stepping aside and holding the door open for me. “Fine, sir.” He’s office was quite spacious with little furniture in it. I took a seat on the chair after he had instructed me to. “Does anyone suspect you yet?” He asked after a while of silence. He was a really awkward man. “No, I don’t think so.” “Good good.” He said, walking over to a machine at the end of the room. “Please come sit here, let's begin today’s test.” In another thirty minutes, we were done. The baby was doing just fine and so was I. I was one month pregnant and doctor Schwann said I should be expecting my baby bump anytime now. “Thank you. Have a nice day sir.” “You too.” I left the office and headed toward the market to get the food items needed. The market was crowded and it was really hard to get through. First item, onions. The onion shop was just a few feet away from the entrance. I got there and loaded a cart with eight bags of onions. I dipped my hand into my pocket to get out the money but I couldn’t feel anything there. Panic shot through me as I searched frantically for the money in all my pockets. “Hey, you!” A squeaky voice said. “Are you trying to steal my onions?!” “No madam, I just can’t find my money.” I said, still emptying my pockets. I searched through my mind, trying to remember if I had left it anywhere. The only person I had come in contact with was the woman from the bus station. Could she possibly have been a pickpocket? She had too many bags in her hand to even try pickpocketing. Or else… No, it can’t be. The werewolf world had gotten rid of witches a long time ago. Putting my hand back inside the pocket where the money originally was, I found a small black card. I stared at the two words written on the card and I couldn’t believe my eyes. “Red locs” it said and in an instance it disappeared into thin air. Dropping the onions back, I apologized to the shop keeper. I made my way back to the packhouse filled with dread at the thought of explaining this absurd story to anyone.
