Chapter 2

Four years ago, Piper came home from medical school for the weekend when rogues attacked her pack. Her father, Alpha Pierre, saw rogues breaking into the daycare, and several warriors ran there to protect the children. He had no idea the school was empty since the kids would be there any other day. He had forgotten they had gone on a field trip to the zoo. That day, Alpha Pierre and his men were shot full of wolfbane and shredded to pieces. When they ran into the school, twenty-something rogues were waiting for them. Piper's mother, Talmai, took it hard and grieved for months. She still hasn't found her second chance, mate. She helps out at the daycare a lot. Talmai said working there and staying busy help her deal with her loss. Eight months ago, Alpha Lief Huxley arrived at Piper's pack, the Sabre Fur Prowlers, hoping to find his mate. He was about to step out of the car when he smelt his mate. He was looking at all the women who were outside. But his mate's intoxicating scent was among them. Lief was about to lose it, and his wolf was coming out when he saw a 5'7, medium brown complexion Goddess with brown eyes and black hair walking out, sniffing until they looked at each other. Piper and Lief didn't waste any time accepting, marking, and completing the mating process that day. Later that day, Lief didn't want to leave her, but he had some important meetings scheduled at his pack that evening that he couldn't reschedule. Piper had some Alpha duties that she needed to take care of. Three hours later, she screamed and let out a loud howl. When she was shifting into her wolf Saga, she stopped and fell to the floor crying."I have lost two of the most important men in my life. Why? Why?" She yells, looking at her mother. Her mother sits on the floor beside her and wraps her arms around her. "Oh, baby, mommy doesn't have the answer to that. I'm sorry." She kissed Piper's head and held her so tight as if letting go of her daughter would cause her to disappear. Phoenix, her best friend, and Beta didn't stop until they found all the bastards involved in Lief and Oz's death. Oz was Leif's Beta and best friend. Phoenix and his wolf, Boulder, killed all of them and came back to the pack and took care of Piper. He and Piper aren't blood-related but were raised as sister and brother. After that, all Piper could think of was saving lives, and she was hired right out of medical school at Southshore General Hospital, the largest hospital in California. Her mother was so proud of her. Last year, Piper became the head Orthopedic Surgeon. Phoenix takes care of the pack for her for now. She doesn't want to reveal that she's the Alpha of the largest pack in California because she doesn't want trouble to follow her to the hospital. **** "Present" Piper and Phoenix are just returning to their pack from Washington, DC. Where they had fought beside Alpha President Enrique, Alpha First Lady Priyanka, and their friends. Piper went straight to her room without seeing her mother. Phoenix is looking at her walking upstairs when Apple, Piper’s Delta, walks beside him. “How is she doing?” He shook his head, “No change. Piper did really well in front of everyone. Damn, she put up a good front. But everyone knew that she was still grieving. Something has me worried about this trip she is going on. Her being in the woods for two weeks alone isn't sitting well with me. I don’t think it’s a good idea. I don’t know which one is worse, her working all the time at the hospital or this trip to wine country.” Phoenix walks into the den. “Well, we can’t have her working all the time. Getting over Lief is taking her longer than I expected. Piper feels responsible for his death. She said if she had gone with him to his pack that day instead of staying here to work, he wouldn’t have gotten killed by those bastards. It’s still hard to digest that Judas killed Lief because Piper refused all of his advances and accepted her true mate. One thing is for sure: he and his damn friends won’t be killing anyone else.” Apple sits down and takes a deep breath. Phoenix rubs his forehead ."I would feel a hell of a lot better if she would take some warriors or you with her." Upstairs, Piper is soaking in a hot lavender bubble bath. She closes her eyes and sees her handsome Lief's face. “My love, I'm sorry I let you down.” Tears run down her cheeks as she remembers the last time she saw her mate. After drying off and putting on a pair of cut-off denim shorts and a light blue tank top. Piper pulls herself together and gathers her thoughts, and she joins Phoenix and Apple in her office. Piper sits behind her desk, reading an email that Apple had pulled up for her. “Why do Alpha Henry’s daughters keep requesting to come here? Deny it, deny it, deny it before I hunt them down and sock them in the damn eyes. Why don’t they give up? It has been two years now. I heard they were nothing but trouble. We don't need any drama around here. Is there anything I need to do or know before I leave?" Apple is looking at Phoenix, pointing to Piper with her head. Phoenix shook his head and looked at Piper. She's looking at them. "Speak your mind, Ms. Apple." Piper picks up her soda and gives it all her attention. Apple pops her lips. "You should take someone with you. Phoenix and I would feel better. Hell, Piper, you're staying in a place that is on the outskirts of neutral territory. s**t, rogues are probably camping out in the woods. You don't need to be alone. Now I have said my peace." "Okay, you said your peace. But I'm going alone anyway. I need this time for myself to deal with everything. Plus, pick up some fantastic wine while I'm there. I heard that Lord's Winery Vineyard is the best. I'm staying not too far from there." Piper is walking out of her office. "You and Saga, be careful. Let us know if you need us. Phoenix is putting two suitcases in the back of her black Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 6x6. "I can't believe you didn't stop her." Apple hit his arm, looking at Piper driving away. Phoenix throws his hands up. "She's the Alpha. I can't make that woman do anything she doesn't want to do. As stubborn as she is, even if she weren't the Alpha, she still wouldn't listen to me." ***** A couple of hours later, Piper arrives right when the sun is setting. She walks to the edge of the yard and looks around. "Now this is a view," Piper inhales the fresh air before she walks inside the two-bedroom cottage that a doctor she works with owns and lets her use for as long as she likes. After unpacking, she heated some of her mother's pot roast. Her mother knew she might be tired after the drive and wanted Piper to have a decent meal. Piper is walking around the front yard while eating her dinner. She sits in the swing and hears a howling sound. That didn’t bother her at all, and she was used to that. Piper also knows that the Ghost Shadow pack is nearby. But she doesn’t know who the Alpha is. Piper has never attended any of the Alpha meetings, and she always sends Phoenix to represent her. Later that night, Piper was in bed reading when she heard howling sounds, but this time it was different. It was echoing loudly and sounded like the wolf was in pain. She throws her robe on and walks outside, hoping to hear the noise again. She put her hands on her hips in frustration because the howling had stopped, and walked toward the house when she heard it again. Piper runs in that direction, and she hears heavy footsteps running away. She sniffs the air and smells two mixed scents. “ Well, I take whoever they were didn’t want my help.” She puts it in the back of her mind and goes back to bed. The next morning, she's out walking around and sees two different sets of wolf footprints. “It must have been someone from the Ghost Shadows. They probably picked up my scent and wanted to make sure that I was not here to harm them. But that still doesn’t explain those weird, painful noises. I wish they hadn't run away." Right after lunch, Piper decides to go for a drive and do some wine tasting. She made an itinerary the same day she decided to come here. The first winery is The Peach Vineyard, and the second, she steps out of her jeep, the foul scent of rogue hits her. Piper looked in the direction where the scent was the strongest and saw a woman and a man staring at her. "As long as they act civilized, they'll live." She walks inside the store. Piper is tasting a couple of Cabernet Sauvignons, and she wants to buy a few bottles for her mother. Piper finally decided to purchase two cases of the Dhace Viejo, a bright ruby red Cabernet Sauvignon. As she's walking out of the store, the man and woman are propped against her jeep. "I knew their asses were going to be trouble. I'm not in the mood for this crap." Piper walks over to her Jeep. "I was taught that it's rude to lean on people's cars. Now kindly back away." She puts the case of wine in the backseat and closes the door, and she turns to look at them. "We're only trying to be friendly," the man sniffs toward her, "Alpha, a f*****g Alpha.” He winks at her and sticks his tongue out at he, and makes a circle with it. The woman saw him and stepped between him and Piper. "Why are you here?” Piper chuckles and stops. “ Where I go isn’t any of your business. You should be more concerned about putting a leash on that or cutting his tongue out, since he has a problem keeping it inside his mouth if you don’t get the hell away from me. I’ll forget that humans are around, and I will rip both of your damn throats out. “ She gives them both stern looks. “Okay, Ms. Alpha lady.” The man backs up with his hands up. Piper gets in her jeep and drives away. The woman hits him on his chest. “Keep your damn eyes to yourself. “ “Hell, woman, don't hit me again. I was only looking at the pretty Alpha.” He’s rubbing his chest and thinking, “Ms. Alpha, you’ll see me soon.” . “I know that look, and don’t even think about it.” She points at him. He walks over to his truck and mumbles, “ Can’t help but think about her pretty ass. Damn, she smelled good, and that nice round ass." ***** Piper went for a walk when she returned to the cottage. She couldn’t get the sound of all that pain out of her mind, and she wanted to see if she could find the wounded wolves. She walks for almost two hours and doesn’t find anything. "Damn, I knew it." She turns around and sees the man from the winery walking her way. He chuckles and rubs his chin. "Ms. Alpha, it seems you were out here looking for me.” “In your f*****g dreams.” Piper is in the stance defense position, looking at him circling her, but he keeps his distance. He’s licking his lips .”Come on, don't be shy. Give me a little. You might enjoy it.” “The day I give you some of this is the day I die.” Piper is still looking at him. “Then I guess I’ll have to get some the hard way. I always love it from the back, anyway. s**t, it's my favorite position." He chuckles while shifting. Piper takes a deep breath, shifts into Saga, and growls at the average-sized brown wolf. The wolf winks at her and charges at her. Saga shook her head and ran toward the wolf as he jumped into the air. Saga jumps higher than the wolf and swings her front right claw at him as she's over his body. The wolf howls and falls to the ground. Saga lands on all four and turns to look at the blood dripping on the ground from the cut on the back of his neck. The wolf looks at the ground at his blood and howls at her. Saga jumps on the wolf and pins him to the ground on his back. The wolf is trying to scuffle around. Saga smirks, clamps her teeth on his neck, and rips a piece off. She steps off the wolf and sits down, looking at him dying. After the wolf took his last breath, she shifted back. Piper looks at the dead wolf. “You didn’t have to die today if you had listened to that woman, but you listened to that little d**k of yours and see where that got you. Dead, yep, dead. Damn, I don't have any clothes out here. Now I have to walk back to the cottage and come back to bury your foul ass." Piper walks toward the cottage naked as a jaybird when she hears those painful noises again. She turns in the direction it's coming from. "I might be able to help you. I'm a doctor. Don't be afraid." Then she hears the noises further away. "I give up."
