Chapter Fifteen The closer I get to the gate, the more destroyed things seem to be. Fires rage on every corner, throwing soot out into the air, and covering everything with a horrible thick smoke that makes it hard to see anything, even if it's right in front of me. I tear a stray strip of fabric from the ruined bodice of my dress and wrap it around my lower face to act as a mask, just like I did when we blew up the cage fights. It's even less effective than the way I did it then, but it's better than nothing. The gates tremble as another thunder crack rips through the air. I can't decide if they're more or less scary now I know what's happening. Plumes of powdered stone join the smoke swirling through the air.
