Adelaide’s POV
Adelaide’s eye slowly opened; she could feel the change in her soul. Her eldest and only surviving child was now 16. She sighed, remembering her 16th birthday, the day her wolf Cinder first spoke to her.
*Flashback*
“Come on, Adelaide, open your eyes! I know you felt it just like it did,” Katherine bounced on my bed, jolting me fully awake.
“Was that really necessary, Katherine, you could clearly see I was trying to sleep. What could possibly be so important that you need to wake me up at…” she gazed over to her alarm clock “12:05 in the blasted morning!”
“Of course, it was necessary; it is time, I can hear my wolf for the first time! She is chattering away in my head. Don’t you hear yours?”
Adelaide sighed and relaxed just a bit, searching her mind for a hint of her wolf. That is when she heard the voice for the first time.
“Hello Adelaide, I have waited a long time for this moment. I am so happy you can finally hear me speak to you.”
Adelaide tilted her head to the side, using her mind to communicate for the first time, “hello my wolf, what is your name?”
Cinder chuckled inside Adelaide’s head, “talking to me will get easier with time, we will learn together. My name is Cinder.”
“When will we get to shift Cinder?”
“Soon, little one, soon. When the clock strikes midnight, while the moon is at its highest, we will shift and finally become one.”
*Present*
Adelaide wondered if her daughter was meeting her wolf for the first time. Some teens unconsciously block their wolves out. She certainly had at first. Adelaide sighed; she wanted to get up and check on her daughter, but she just could not bring herself to face this moment without Benjamin. It was not fair to anyone; she still had a lifetime of these moments that she would have to share with Elizabeth alone.
Rolling over, she promised herself that she would be there when Elizabeth shifted for the first time. Even if she could not get up now, she would be sure to be there, at least she hoped.
