“So, the extra assassins, who is the target?”
Carolina sobbed for a while.
“Everyone, even me, and you all of us,” she explained.
Mark hugged her.
“If I can ask? How many teams are out there?”
“A $million worth of currency is a lot considering each phase has only twelve recipients,” she said.
Carolina looked at Mark with a haunted face.
“Just me, just us, the first team. It’s my job to start the recruitment process. Everything rests with me. I f**k up. Humanity goes down. Everything is in my bloody hands. One mistake and we have a release of the lethal assassins every hour. We must also keep on recruiting. Exchanging our digital currency for cash until everyone is using our digital currency. When that happens that will mean the defeat of the current system. That will mean the total trapping of all digital weapons,” she said briefly, smiling.
“Explain again how this works?”
“Our digital currency will neutralize these digital weapons. Trapping them to decipher later before we can identify who is behind this. Then after that. We can get court orders to get these evil culprits to be shot. As the courts will have declared their crimes so grave that if they are left alive. They will destroy humans. A sure way to stop all this,” she told him.
“A splendid plan. So, the only way to stop it, is to control the flow of money?”
“So, it’s not just about the digital currency. It’s about creating a better world for everyone. A huge, risky task but sure something I would like to be part of. I would love my kids growing up in your world,” said Mark.
“Thanks, Mark!”
Carolina smiled.
“This is the first time this week I have seen you smiling,” said Mark.
“Thanks. That’s a grand plan. If we make money in the process what’s wrong with that?”
“The richest man in the world? Probably. So, it’s true that he is trying to imitate God?”
“God’s Dilemma. I wish he was here to talk about this topic. I have seen no one so enthusiastic about something like this man,” she said.
“My parents are Christians, and I know imitating God is blasphemy,” explained Mark.
“Listen! Mark, he is not saying that he is God, no. His argument is that like us the fact that we spend trillions of dollars trying to create a robot that can act human, think human and live like us. God too had this dilemma of trying to create a human being. That will act God, think human, and live God. His argument is that God gave us everything to imitate. So, one day we understand that we must think, and act like him. All mankind’s inventions are just concepts laid down by God in the bible for us to imitate. Birds for planes, humans for the systems we use, e.g. computers, etc. eyes for cameras, speakers for ears, I mean everything. So, if God’s world is the perfect system. Why can’t one of us rise to the challenge and try it globally? That’s when David comes in!”
“I must admit this is the first time I have heard this in this line. One clever man?”
“The stakes are high. We risk losing a lot and it will be dangerous if we fail. The risks out of this world. But if we are to pull it out. The rewards are out of this world too,” she said.
She looked at Mark and tears started running down her cheeks.
“I don’t understand. Shouldn’t you be happy?” She sobbed until her eyes were red.
“I am scared. I have never been so scared all my life,” she said.
“Okay,” said Mark calmly.
“I am scared I might be going to die,” she said.
“Don’t be silly. No one knows about that stuff,” he comforted her. She looked at him with a haunted face.
“What is it? You look like you have seen a ghost,” said Mark.
She sobbed profusely. Mark looked confused.
“Hey what did I say? You seem to have increased the crying?”
“I have a replacement. But it’s not just about that, you know?”
“Evelina? I know you told me,” said Mark.
“We had dinner, the four of us including his friend. Somehow, we exchange coats. So, I took hers. That’s when I found the keys in the pocket. I knew the keys; David’s keys for his mansion. Curiosity killed the cat. So, I went there,” she said. Then wiped off the tears.
“What did you find out?”
“I am scared. I think he is trying to get me killed. How can he send me without all the details?”
“It’s not just that? Is it? What else?”
“In his plan, I am the Holy Ghost,” she said.
She looked sad.
“I was spooked by what I saw at his mansion,” she said as
she felt like laughing, then like crying even more that she just hugged Mark.
“I am a spirit in all this. My image turned to a spirit in his mansions’ mirror. So how can I be a spirit without dying? Maybe he is trying to get me killed,” she said.
Mark’s heart started pounding. As they hugged Carolina felt Mark’s heart literally shaking her head as she rested on his chest.
“You believe this, huh?”
“Don’t be silly?”
“So why is your heart about to explode? You are afraid this could be true. Digging my own grave? I swear I took this task because of the rewards. Don’t get me wrong. I knew the risks, but maybe I should have thought about all this. There is no single day that passes by without me thinking about that Holy Ghost image,” she told him.
“The strange thing is that. The time she was supposed to watch this video. Is at the end and according to the video I will be dead then,” she said.
“Why so sure?”
“He said that I will be in the spirit world?”
Mark this time literally touched his heart instinctively to prevent his heart exploding. Somehow, he knew this was the first time he had an irregular and constant pounding heart. So elevated that his body shook. He felt so afraid. That he walked away to conceal his breathing difficulties. He felt like choking with fear. He thought for a while.
“He might have used the words figuratively. Meaning in hiding because you said he will go into an invisible mood years later,” he said comforting her.
Carolina thought about it. That made sense.
“Imagine failing to save all recipients? And the triggering of twelve assassins all the time. And as you said, all after you. There shall come a time when you also have to operate in the invisible mood,” he suggested.
Carolina walked away and paced. She instantly stopped and looked at Mark.
“Why didn't I think about it that way? You are right. Just a lapse of faith,” she assured herself.
“I don’t blame you. I think I have never been this afraid all my life,” he said.
Carolina walked straight to him and hugged him.
“We can pull it off,” said Mark.
“Are you just saying this to comfort me? Where would the blood-thirsty piranha of assassins be? I might not pull it off. The risks are high,” she said.
“So why Evelina?” He asked.
She breathed hard.
“In the video. He suggested as the one. I mean Eve as the one who brought God’s wrath on mankind by disobeying God’s commands. Of not eating the fruit. She is on task this time to save humanity from extinction. The current regime and its system if not stopped is going to cause our extinction. So, who best to take humanity out of this place? Than Eve herself, but this time doing what is right,” she said.
Mark smiled.
“Clever man. A second chance?”
“Thanks, Mark. I was dead scared thinking that he was planning to get me killed,” she said.
“He sounds like a good guy. Just a greedy man, but not that bad,” he suggested.
“Let me show you something,” Carolina retrieved her phone and showed Mark the Holy Ghost from David’s mansion.
“Holy Ghost. Literally?”
They both laughed.
Mark left and came back that evening.
“I have a solution. Just find a way of keeping five and six at the same time,” he said.
“I think there is something in the diary about that, but it’s not good,” she said.
She took the diary and read it.
“Will only trigger more assassins. Sent to kill all at the same time, she read for him.”
Miles away.
“I am just old, but I am not stupid,” he said.
Mr. Ramos lifted his cup of iced tea and sipped.
“What could go wrong? Everyone will be using the same digital currency globally?”
“Yes, what I am saying is that if you like that digital currency that much, why not just get our own and use it?”
“Damn it! Old man, why you are so stubborn. This has been done already. Hyperinflation is such a bad thing. That controlling it alone is difficult, if not impossible. His plan can work if applied globally, but individually we will be strong in the future,” he said.
“Some are doing it using their own, so why can’t we?”
“Is it safe? We don’t want to be forced to take short cuts and cheap routes and cause the destruction of humanity. Do we?”
“Our system works perfectly and has been there for centuries, and I tell you this. If it doesn’t work. It is because of him sabotaging it. By his stupid demands. Don’t pay taxes, etc. I tell you this. He is no better than all those rebels who got beheaded. It’s a crime against the state. To rally people not to pay taxes. This digital currency is a trick to justify not paying taxes,” he said.
“Skeptical all the time, old man?”
“No, I know it. If we all use digital currency. Then the people have no reason to pay taxes. Digital currency is not like money. Where you can print the head of the leader. So that the phrase; give Caesar what belongs to Caesar comes into play. Without the image of the President, etc. people are justified to refuse to pay. His plan is to phase out even national currencies. I believe for the system to work at one point he will ban even national currency, leaving just his digital currency. That will be putting us out of business. What is it in for us? You must think about us first?”
Chloe kept quiet
“I am not stupid. These are the charges I will launch as a counter attack. Rebellion against the state. Rallying support against the government. Enticing others to rebel against the government. Threatening to overthrow a legitimate government. Money laundering. Involved in the use and making of banned digital currency. Trying to change the country’s autonomy. If found guilty of these charges, I want him beheaded and I want his head,” he said before Chloe got up and walked to the window.
“He will not lose favor with the people. He is the man for the future. Digital currencies are the future,” she said.
The old man cursed.
“Arrange the meeting. I think we must address this now before it becomes an issue,” said the old man.
Later.
Jeremiah got up agitated and faced the leaders.
“We must stand firm to safeguard our way of life. This talk about change and the new system is not for us. I say if it’s not broken don’t fix it,” he roared.
The people made wildly uncontrolled noises in disapproval. Andrew looked at Jeremiah then addressed everyone.
“As you have heard our system works. Trust me it works perfectly for us. This man is after a power change. This is political. A struggle in every meaning of the word. A power shift is what he is after. If all our fathers listened. Then we wouldn’t be here. This man wants to change the system to suit him. The current system might not be working for him. So, it’s his issue because it works for us. It’s not meant for everyone. Otherwise, it’s not a system. Every system has losers and winners. Play it right to understand it then it will be good for you. But try to be a rebel then lose focus and the system will punish you too. As you will struggle. Just because he doesn’t understand it. Doesn’t mean it’s broken. I ask you. What are his real motives? I think this is what all of us must be worried about. Not the issues with the system. I personally think that his proposals are meant to crash our system deliberately. So that he is justified to call for a system change. Let’s defend what is ours. This is an attack on all of us,” he thundered.
“That will be going too far. He is a legit global President and all his message is for an alternative system best for all. I think an attack on him without the courts would look bad to us. His ideas are for everyone and are likely to trigger uprisings. But if we use the law, then we will look good on our part as well. Fighting the government and inciting others to rebel against a legit government and rallying people not to pay taxes etc. Can see him beheaded,” he suggested.
There was a general sense of disbelief.
“I am skeptical about all this. What are his real motives? I don’t want to be that person. One who will take a snake in. A snake that will end up biting and killing him. We have an option. Refuse the system outright!”
Dwain raised his hand.
“I can easily see why most of the rebels are from the old and frail. No offense Mr. Ramos but think also about us. The young ones. To be honest. He is doing all this for us and not himself. Mind you he is a father too. A dad is concerned about the welfare of his children as well. A dad who understands the needs of his children. Okay, I admit his main motives are unclear. But it’s a win-win situation. You have nothing to lose. He is not going to change anyone. He doesn’t care who runs your country. As long as you obey his guiding principles,” he argued.
Ramos looked unmoved by all this.
“If all generals would listen to amateur soldiers in front. Surely, they would lose all battles,” he said.
The people laughed and clapped hands.
“I say he is a rebel and the only punishment is death. His plan is an attack on us. A sabotage here, therefore, a crime. I say without doubt today that he is attempting to crash the system.
Somewhere in the city.
Stealthily Martin slid the door open and entered the huge office. As soon as he stepped on the inside floor. A computer screen instantly came up on the floor in front of him. He stopped fear struck as the screen showed a search in progress.
“An intruder detected,” the message startled him.
“A one Martin Tinos age twenty-seven. Father George Tinos age fifty-four. Heartbeat...
Body Temperature...
Weapons; Automatic magnum nine-millimeter.
Attitude: Elevated factors. Probably an angry mood.
Alarms activated!”
“s**t. What the f**k?”
He stopped and stepped backward. Instantly aimed the gun as the beep continued.
“Drop your gun. Don’t make me ask you again?”
“I want to talk to your boss,” he said.
“Is he expecting you?”
“Of course, after what he did to my father. He must be expecting me!”
