I am Elara, a Lunar Seer who spent three years hiding her power for Alpha Kael, my fated mate. He drew strength through our unfinished bond while I waited for him to mark me before the pack. Then Lila arrived, and he began giving her my place piece by piece. Tonight, Kael leaves the marking altar for her a third time. Under the old law, that refusal frees me from every vow I made to him. So I take my power back and let the Council see who has been holding his throne upright.

Chapter 1 The Blood on the Altar
Moonlight lay across the Grand Altar while the pack elders recited the covenant. This was our third ceremony in three years, and the last postponement the old law allowed. I had spent those years hiding what I was and letting Kael draw on my power. Each time he asked me to wait, I accepted another promise and returned to the same altar on the next full moon. Kael raised the ceremonial bone blade. The white edge had been sharpened for one purpose: to open my palm. If he accepted the first drop, the pack would recognize me as his Luna and seal our souls before the elders. He was my fated mate and the Alpha of Silver Moon. I had once believed that settled everything. The old law allowed an Alpha to postpone a public marking twice. A third refusal under a full moon released the rejected mate from every altar vow. Kael called that law obsolete whenever I mentioned it, so tonight I said nothing. A gasp broke across the elders' chant. Lila stood at the foot of the steps with one hand pressed to her chest. Her face had gone pale, and she swayed where everyone could see her. Pack law barred uninvited wolves from the altar circle, yet no guard moved her back. "Kael." Her whisper carried all the way to the altar. His attention left me. The energy gathered between us broke, and the bone blade struck the stone. Kael was down the steps before it stopped rattling. He caught Lila against his chest. "What happened? Are you hurt?" The elders lost the next words of the chant. Behind me, hundreds of pack members went quiet. Some pitied me, some enjoyed the humiliation, and all of them waited to see whether I would beg. I kept my eyes on Lila's clothes. She wore a robe of white wolf fur threaded with moonlight. My ceremonial robe. The pack seamstress had sealed it inside the ritual chest that morning, and only the presiding Alpha carried the key. I was supposed to put it on after the marking, when the elders announced my new rank. Kael had opened the chest and dressed Lila in it before he ever walked up the altar steps. Her collapse might have been improvised. The public humiliation was ready in advance. He looked at me at last. Annoyance pulled his brows together as his Alpha command pressed against the clearing. "Elara, don't make a scene. Her heart is weak. We'll do this next month." Next month. For three years, he had always had one more condition. "Wait until your power settles." Then, "Wait until the pack is secure." Lately, every promise ended with Lila needing more time to become stable. Through our unsealed mate-sign, he had used my Lunar Seer energy to strengthen his own command. Covenant law permitted that exchange while I gave it freely. His third refusal let me withdraw that consent here, before the altar. The familiar pressure in my chest eased. I bent and picked up the bone blade. The altar stone chilled my fingertips, but the handle still held Kael's warmth. "Elara, what are you doing?" Kael took one step toward me. "Put it down." I turned my left palm upward and drew the blade across it. My hand stayed steady. Blood filled the cut, and silver sparks moved through the red, exposing the Lunar Seer power I had kept hidden from the pack. Then I held my hand over the carved center of the altar. One of the elders lurched forward. "No!" The first drop fell for Kael's first refusal. The second followed. When the third struck stone, the altar answered. White light turned red. The ground bucked beneath us, and every witness to the broken covenant dropped to their knees. Even the strongest Alpha in the clearing could not resist it. The force came from the altar itself, recording the oath Kael had refused to keep rather than answering a command from me. He was torn away from Lila. The strength he had drawn from me for three years left him so fast that both hands hit the dirt. I remained standing while red light circled the altar. The power I had thinned and hidden for Kael settled back under my skin, whole again. Kael looked up from the foot of the altar, shocked to find himself kneeling with every other wolf. I had spent years loving him, and he had spent them teaching me exactly what that love bought. I pressed my b****y fingers to the faint gold crescent on my neck. This mark had appeared when we first recognized each other. Now I rubbed blood across it and began to erase it.
