Chapter 1 The Tavern
Damon and Ardryll
The air was thick with the threat of rain. Dark grey clouds cast the forested land in shadow causing the two elves to pick up their pace. It would be half an hour before they made it to Basinborn, a town known for its taverns and market. They could only pray that the storm held off for a few hours more.
The first few drops started coming down when the two men entered the gates of the bustling town. It was chaos as people ran this way and that to escape the oncoming storm. Damon and Ardryll were lucky that they managed to arrive at the tavern as the onslaught of rain started.
The tavern was dimly lit by torches on the wooden pillars, the smell of stale ale, sweat, and stew attacked the senses as the two looked around. Damon led the pair to the counter where the keeper of the tavern stood, currently telling off some drunken patrons. Damon waved the man down handing him 2 gold pieces for a room for him and his partner for the night. The Dwarven man nodded and led the two elves up a flight of steps. He handed Damon a key before leaving the two men alone in the room.
Damon sighed and slipped off his pack and set it on the bed. He removed his cowl revealing his silver locks, and dark blue grey skin, a drow. Rarely seen on the surface and often hostile when spotted. He looked at his companion with a slight frown. “There goes our plans of checking out the market today,” the dark elf said.
The golden haired elf looked at him and shook his head, he signed, ‘I thought your plan was to stay in the room and drink?’ The elf silently teased with a smirk.
“That was the plan after I went to the market to get some more supplies,” Damon stated, rolling his eyes.
‘What will you ever do now, Damon,’ Ardryll responded, before removing his own pack and some of his armour.
“I guess, I will have to actually spend time with you instead of getting my ass drunk,” Damon mused.
‘Lords forbid you actually spend time with your husband,’ Ardryll signed once he finished unpacking. Damon chuckled, walking over to his husband and placing a light kiss to his forehead. “Let us retire for the night, we have been walking for nearly a fortnight and this will be the first in that long while we slept in an actual bed,” Damon suggested taking a step back and brushing some hair from his partner's face.
‘That does sound like a better idea,’ Ardryll signed, a look of relief washed over the tired elf as he began to change for the night.
Ekron
The sound of drunken men filled the dim tavern. Ekron smirked, as he took the winnings from the table. “I tried tellin’ ya, I can kick all y’all’s asses in this game,” the tiefling said with a smirk. The male pocketed the gold before finishing his ale. “‘Nother round?” He asked. Several of the other players mumbled some form of a curse under their breath before putting more gold coins on the table.
This went on for several more hours, only ending when most of the players were either passed out drunk or out of gold. Ekron chuckled, “Better luck next time.” He put the bag of gold into a pouch before deciding to migrate over to the counter. “Caskflayer, another mug of ale,” He said before slapping down a gold piece onto the table. “By Gods Ekron, you ever goin’ to stop milking my customers dry of gold?” Caskflayer said shaking his head as he got the man another ale. “Once they stop comin’ to me for a good ol’ game of poker,” he stated pulling out the bag of winnings to show off. “I am waitin’ for the day someone finds out that you’ve been cheatin’ and kicks your ass,” the dwarf said setting the mug in front of the tiefling.
“Cheatin’? That’s where you are wrong, my dear Caskflayer. I have never once cheated in a game my whole life,” Ekron said, looking offended by his friend's accusation.
“I call s**t on that,” Caskflayer laughed.
“Ouch,” Ekron said mockingly covering his heart as if he was hurt by the other’s words. He then laughed and downed his drink. “Thanks for the drink pal. I think I am goin’ to retire for the night. Gotta get up early if I want to take the freshest bread from Fossena tomorrow,” he said, getting up and heading to his room on the second floor.
