Chapter 1 The Independent Heiress
Celeste Laurent had always known what she wanted. From an early age, she had seen how wealth could be both a privilege and a burden. Her parents, highly influential figures in the corporate world, provided her with every opportunity to excel, yet she resented the notion of being dependent on their fortune. Unlike many of her peers, she refused to ride on their coattails, determined to carve a path of her own.
"Are you really sure about this, Celeste? You know it's different and hard if you start a company from scratch without proper backing," her mother, Evangeline, said worriedly while helping her pack her things in the luggage. As the heiress to the Laurent legacy, expectations loomed over her, but she had other plans.
"Mom, I want to learn to be independent. All my life, I've depended on your fortune, and I'm thankful for that, but I don't want others to think I had it easy. I need practical experience by establishing this company. I want to inherit the family business with the knowledge I gain from this endeavor," Celeste said with conviction.
"Then if that's what you want, we won't stop you anymore, Celeste. We will support you, but know this—we won't help you. You have to do things on your own. We will just watch from the sidelines," her father, Cassius Laurent, said, standing at the door. "After packing, come to my office. I have something to give you." Celeste looked at her mother, questioning what it was, but her mother simply smiled and urged her to continue packing.
After finishing, Celeste and her mother went straight to her father's office. She was about to knock, but her mother opened the door without hesitation. Her father was signing some documents. Even at home, he worked tirelessly—one of the reasons she admired hard work and wanted to establish her own path. She refused to let their efforts go to waste.
"Learn how to knock," her father muttered without looking up. Her mother raised an eyebrow, clearly irritated.
"Oh, oh, this is war," Celeste thought, amused.
"Come again? Knock? What's that? Is that food?" her mother said sarcastically and sat on the couch. Her father looked shocked for a moment before laughing awkwardly. "I'm kidding, darling," he said, kissing her cheek before turning to Celeste.
"Oh, sweetheart, you're here. Take a look at this." Trying to divert attention, he handed her an envelope.
"Dad, what is this?" Inside was a contract.

CONTRACT FOR THE INHERITANCE OF THE LAURENT LEGACY
This Contract is made and entered into on February 10, 20**, by and between the Laurent Family, hereinafter referred to as "Laurent Family," and Celeste Laurent, hereinafter referred to as "Celeste."
WHEREAS, the Laurent Family wishes to ensure that Celeste is capable of managing and upholding the Laurent Legacy and associated businesses;
WHEREAS, Celeste agrees to prove her capability and independence by establishing and successfully operating her own company without reliance on the Laurent Family’s resources;
NOW, THEREFORE, in consideration of the mutual covenants and conditions contained herein, the parties agree as follows:
1. CONDITIONS FOR INHERITANCE
1.1. Celeste must establish a company solely using her own resources, without financial or strategic support from the Laurent Family.
1.2. The company must achieve measurable success, determined by profitability, sustainability, and industry recognition within a specified period of 1 year.
1.3. All official records and public recognition of Celeste’s connection to the Laurent Family will be erased to ensure that she does not receive any external advantages due to her lineage.
1.4. Celeste must provide updates on her personal well-being and general status to the Laurent Family once or twice a month.
1.5. Celeste must prioritize her safety at all times while pursuing this endeavor.
2. EVALUATION OF SUCCESS
2.1. A panel of independent business experts, selected by mutual agreement, will assess the success of Celeste’s company.
2.2. The assessment will be based on financial stability, market influence, and operational efficiency.
2.3. The final determination of success will be documented and submitted to the Laurent Family for review.
3. CONSEQUENCES OF FAILURE
3.1. If Celeste fails to establish a successful company within the agreed timeframe, she must return to the Laurent Family and assume a position within the Laurent business empire.
3.2. Celeste will be allowed to retain ownership of her business, but she must fulfill a leadership role within the Laurent business empire.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the parties have executed this contract as of the date first written above.
Laurent Family Representative
Cassius Laurent & Evangeline Laurent
Date: February 10, 20**
Celeste Laurent
Date: February 10, 20**
Celeste looked up from the contract. "Dad, isn’t this a win-win for me? This seems too favorable."
Cassius chuckled. "Your mother and I knew this day would come—the day you sought independence. This contract is our punishment for you leaving us. Now, just sign it so we can wrap this up."
Celeste studied the contract again. It felt more like a lesson than a punishment. Her parents wanted her to succeed but also to understand the weight of their legacy and the reality of running a business without their influence. They were giving her a chance to prove herself while ensuring she remained connected to the Laurent empire in the end. And she would not disappoint them.

Celeste left the mansion and stayed in a penthouse her parents had prepared for her stay. After unpacking, she called her friend Liana.
"Sup, Cel?" Liana answered after three rings.
"You busy? I want to meet up. I have something to say," Celeste said.
"Nope, I'm always free for you, baby," Liana joked. Celeste preferred her teasing over moments of depression. She'd rather have Liana laughing than sad.
"Good. I'll text you the time and address. I have to finish unpacking—"
"Wait! Where are you?" Liana asked curiously.
"I'll tell you later. Bye," Celeste said quickly, knowing Liana’s curiosity wouldn’t end if she stayed on the call.
They met at a café the next day. Celeste stirred her coffee, looking at Liana seriously. "I'm starting my own company, and I want you to be my co-founder."
Liana blinked. "Wait, what? You serious?"
"Dead serious. I trust you, Liana. We’ve always talked about starting something together, and now’s the time."
Liana grinned. "Hell yeah. You know I'm in."

A few days later, Celeste met Damien Blackwood, a well-known investor. She sat across from him in a high-end lounge, calmly assessing him.
"I’ll get straight to the point, Celeste," Damien began, his expression unreadable. "Your business idea is solid, and I see great potential in it. I’m willing to invest, but under one condition."
Celeste leaned back, unfazed. "What condition?"
He smirked. "An engagement. Strictly business. We sign a contract stating that we’re engaged, ensuring mutual benefits. You secure the investment, and I gain an advantage in certain business dealings where a fiancée would be beneficial."
Celeste tilted her head slightly, considering his words. "You’re proposing an arrangement where I control the narrative? My business receives funding, and I dictate the terms of our engagement."
Damien's smirk faltered for a fraction of a second before he nodded. "If that’s how you want to play it, yes. But I expect professionalism."
She extended her hand, her gaze unwavering. "Then here are my conditions: full transparency in the contract, no personal obligations beyond what’s necessary, and I have the final say on how our engagement is perceived in public."
Damien took her hand firmly, realizing that Celeste wasn’t someone he could manipulate easily. "Deal."
Celeste smirked. "Good. Then let’s make this arrangement work—on my terms."

The dimly lit office carried an air of quiet dominance, the scent of expensive cigars and aged whiskey lingering in the air. Floor-to-ceiling windows revealed the sprawling cityscape below, but the man standing before them had eyes only for the documents on his desk—the latest report on Celeste Laurent.
A sharp knock interrupted the silence. His most trusted aide entered, standing stiffly before him.
"Sir, today she met with a man named Damien Blackwood," the aide reported, his voice steady but cautious. "According to Mr. Blackwood's secretary, the two of them are… engaged."
Silence.
The air grew heavier. The man’s fingers, resting on the sleek wooden desk, twitched slightly before curling into a slow, controlled fist. The room seemed to drop a few degrees in temperature. His gaze remained fixed on the city, his reflection in the glass showing nothing but cold calculation.
Finally, he spoke. His voice was low, smooth, and laced with an edge sharp enough to cut steel.
"Engaged?" He let out a quiet chuckle, devoid of humor. "How amusing."
The aide swallowed hard. He had seen his employer furious before, but this… this was something else.
A slow exhale. The man turned, his dark eyes glinting with something dangerous, something possessive.
"Send someone to seduce Blackwood," he ordered, his tone calm but carrying the weight of absolute authority. "Ensure the media captures everything."
The aide hesitated only for a moment before nodding. "Understood, sir."
The man stepped closer, picking up a single photograph from his desk—one of Celeste, her fierce eyes and unwavering confidence captured in a candid moment. He traced the edges of the picture with his thumb, a ghost of a smirk tugging at his lips.
"He dares to take what’s mine?" His voice dropped to a whisper, but the possessiveness in it was unmistakable.
His grip on the photo tightened.
"I will bring back what belongs to me. Celeste Laurent was mine from the beginning. And she will be mine again."
The aide bowed slightly before leaving the room, closing the door behind him.
The man remained still, the city lights flickering in his dark gaze. Then, slowly, he placed the photograph back on the desk, straightening it with precise care—like a king setting his pieces on a chessboard, ready to win the game.
-------
A month had passed since Celeste left home and launched her cosmetics company. It had not been easy—her parents, while supportive, observed silently as she struggled in an industry dominated by fierce competition. But she had something others didn’t: unmatched determination.
Her success was hard-earned. Every investor meeting, every product development challenge, and every media interview required relentless effort. Her engagement to Damien Blackwood provided strategic advantages, but she viewed it as a business decision, nothing more.
However, Celeste’s carefully structured world was about to unravel in the most unexpected way.
