Chapter 1: The 2AM Secret
For three years, I thought I married the perfect man.
Chidi Obinna is everything a woman wants. Handsome, tall, rich, caring. My friends envied me. My family prayed for me. My mother always said, Amara, you don hammer, you marry better husband.
And I believed it. Until I started noticing the pattern.
Every night, exactly 2AM, Chidi's phone vibrates. He will check it, his face will change, and he will leave our bedroom. No matter the weather. No matter how tired he is. He just disappears.
Where are you going? I asked him the first time.
Business call, baby. Go back to sleep, he said.
But what kind of business happens at 2AM every single night? What office opens by 2AM?
Last Tuesday, I could not sleep. I followed him. I watched from our bedroom window as he entered his black SUV and drove off. He did not go towards his office. He drove towards the old forest road. The road that everybody in our village says nobody should pass at night.
I waited for three hours. He came back by 5AM, his white shirt stained with red. When he entered the bathroom, I smelled something. Not perfume. Something metallic. Like blood.
He came out and kissed my forehead like nothing happened. Good morning, my love.
I smiled, but inside, my heart was beating fast. Who did I really marry? Is my husband a secret cultist?
And that red stain, was it blood?
I need to find out the truth before it is too late.
