Chapter 6

I tossed and rolled in my bed all night. I couldn't help but worry about Timmy and the others that were taken. I didn't have a good feeling about what was going on here. I didn't from the first day we were brought here but after what we were told, now I really don't. They would kill us and not bother to save us. Then I remembered that the lady said that each of us could be easily replaced. I guess what they said was true. I wondered what they were putting into us that cause someone to die from it. Before I knew it the lights turned on and the wall was once again opening. Another day in this hell hole, I thought. I stood up out of my bed and made my way to the hallway. There were already people making their way to the common room. Kane was waiting by his room and when I got to him he began walking with me. "You didn't sleep did you?" he asked as we continued to walk. I shook my head no and he sighed. "Me either," he said quietly. As we walked into the common room we saw everyone gathered in the same place as yesterday. They were whispering and looking around. As soon as Kane realized what was going on he pushed his way through the crowd. I followed close behind him and gasped when I saw Timmy and another person from our group laying unconscious on the ground. Kane immediately went to Timmy's side and I went to the other person. I gently turned her over and watched her carefully. Her chest was rising up and down slightly so I knew that she was still alive. They both seemed like they were in worse condition than the other girl that was brought in yesterday. I moved around and placed the girl's head in my lap as I had done before. Someone had rushed forward with water and gave each of us cups for them. I placed it to the girl's lips but she wasn't drinking. I looked at Kane and saw him trying to do the same. "She's not drinking it," I said as I couldn't help but worry. Kane looked at her and then at Timmy. "Let's get them to their beds." He said. He swiftly picked up Timmy and another boy from our group picked up the girl. Her arm fell to the side of her, hanging down, limp. Her head tilted back as well as she was being carried. I couldn't move. I wanted to follow to make sure she was alright and that Timmy was alright. Soon I was the only one in the room. Everyone had followed Kane and the other boy. I turned and looked at the wall. I couldn't understand why they were doing this to us. I heard a click and then watched as the wall, that I was just starring at began to open. The sudden noise in the quiet room scared me, making me fall back onto my butt from my knees. As it began opening, I could see the guards waiting patiently for it to open. I began to scoot back. I wanted to get to my feet and run to my room but I couldn't. "Kane!" I managed to yell. The door had opened completely and the men began walking out. It was like time had slowed down. A giant man was walking straight to me. I turned my head to the entrance of the cafeteria as Kane came running into the room. He looked around for a split moment and then he finally saw me. He looked at the men in front of me and then began running in my direction. I felt a strong, firm hand grab onto my arm. My body was being yanked into the air. The man's arms went around my waist, lifting me into the air as if I weighed nothing. I reached out for Kane, hoping he would save me. He reached out as well as he continued to run towards me. A couple of the other guards appeared quickly in front of him, stopping him from getting any further. I felt tears run down my face as I screamed. In the background, other kids were being grabbed as well. The man carried me down the dark hallway he had come from and as the seconds went by the smaller the light from the cafeteria was. Then it was like time caught up. I kicked and screamed, hitting the man that carried me. I was terrified of what they were going to do to me and the others. I was now down a pitch-black hallway. All I could hear was screaming from me and the other kids. The next thing I know I was tossed into a cage. the metal was cold. I wiped the tears from my eyes. There was so much that I could see. When my eyes sight focused all I could see was that table in the middle of the room. there was light only around it. I could see the straps dangling from the side, the ones that we were told about. I looked around me only barely being able to see the white of the kid's clothes next to me. She was sobbing. She was at the back of her cage, with her arms around her legs. "Hey, we're going to be okay." I tried to say to comfort her. "I'm scared. What if they kill us?" she asked which led to her sobbing harder. I didn't know how or what to say to comfort her. I couldn't say that we weren't going to die because I didn't know if we were or not. Some of the kids had died the day before and they didn't care. They said we all were replaceable. I felt around the bars and it seemed like they were wide enough for me to stick my arm through, and so I did. "Here. Take my hand." I said as I held it out to her. I saw her scoot closer to me and then felt her hand in mine. I squeezed her hand and she squeezed back. We stayed like that for a moment until we heard that breath-holding voice. The voice of the woman on the intercom. "Are we ready to start?" She asked. It sounded like she was in the room but I couldn't see her anywhere. Maybe she was using the dark to mask her identity. A man in a long white coat approached the table. He was also pulling a smaller table with vials. "Yes, ma'am we are." "Good. Bring subject one nine nine eight to the table." She said and moments later I heard the sound of one of the cage doors opening, followed by screaming. It was another girl. Then into the light emerged one of the guards pulling the girl behind him. He easily lifted her and placed her onto the table. She was still screaming as the guard held her down and the doctor began securing her to the table. I wanted nothing more than to help her but my body said otherwise. I was now pushing myself to the back of my cage wanting to get as far away as I could. More tears fell down my face as I watched what they were doing. Her wrists and feet were now tied down to the table. She was crying and begging for them not to do this. The sight broke my heart. "The subject is not ready for the injection. Would you like for us to proceed ma'am?" The doctor asked. "Yes, proceed," she replied to him. He nodded his head and turned around to his table of vials. "I'll be using vial 676. The same substance we had luck with, in 3 of the 5 subjects we had yesterday." He announced. As he turned around I saw he had a syringe. He took a couple of steps toward the girl and placed a hand on her arm. She began squirming making it impossible for the doctor to do his job. He looked frustrated and looked at the guard who was standing nearby. The doctor motioned for the guard to come with his head. I thought the guard was going to hold her down but no. He did worse. He pulled a taser out from his belt and held it to her side for a couple of seconds. I watched as she screamed out in pain and then suddenly stopped when the taser was off of her body. The doctor once again nodded and placed his hand on her arm. He then injected her with the serum. "The subject has now been injected. Now we wait."
