Chapter one:chaos
Ring ring ring!!! gosh!!! 7:30am She exclaimed "I am late for work, damn it!. She got up from her bed as quickly as possible, For a second she felt lost in her tiny apartment. It was hot with no AC,a tiny window and cracked wall. She immediately entered the bathroom.cold water splashed all over her body and hair. Two minutes that was all she had given herself. She came out of the bathroom with her hair still wet, dripping down her neck. No time to dry her hair properly. No time for braids, she quickly combed it and grabbed her dark blue jeans and a plain white top from the only plastic chair she had in her apartment. Simple. Decent. She didn't have time to look pretty. "Pretty has never paid any of her bills" She grabbed her bag and crossed the room in long strides. On the cracked wall held her parents photo it was taped together at the middle and the glass had a cracked line. She held it closely and said. Mama. Papa. "I promise to make you both proud of me".she whispered, her voice broke as a tear escaped her eye. They died three years ago,in a car accident. Since then, it had been her,the cafe job and prayer's against the world. If she loses her job,She loses everything. She quickly put the photo frame back on the wall and rushed out. On her way out, Jack was walking into his apartment like he had all day. "Hey Elena! What's the hurry?" He called out She didn't pause to look back at him Just said "jack let's talk later please,I am late for work" "That's what you always say"he muttered behind her."I wonder when we really get to talk". She didn't respond. She stopped the first cab she saw insight It was yellow and old. The driver was wiping his face with a small blue rag when she stopped him. "How much to old miller street cafe?"she asked while opening the door. "Two thousand five hundred"he muttered. "Ahhh". Her hands shook as she brought out the money. It was her food money on a normal morning. Traffic was crazy.horns kept screaming. Cabs kept looking for a way to reach their destination on time. Elena suddenly felt hot,she pressed her forehead against the cabs window glass and counted her breath. If she didnt arrive before 8:35am,mrs. Bonnie would fire her. By 8:20am,the cab stopped outside the cafe. She quickly brought out the money and paid, after she got out of the cab. She stopped for a second to breath.she could hear her heart beating fast. Her white top was stuck to her back due to sweat. Old miller street was loud, coffee smell mixed with delicious pastries and car exhaust.tourists with cameras and beautiful clothes. She didn't know when she started crossing the road. Then she suddenly heard A horn screaming. Tires screeching. A black suv filled her vision. She froze in place. The suv was huge. Tinted windows and black rims that probably cost more than anything she owns. The suv stopped few inches from her knees. Her heart was pounding against her chest. The window rolled down slowly, slow enough to send chills down her spine. She couldn't see the man's face at first, then light hits. Cold brown eyes Sharp jawlines A suit that looked like it was made especially for him. No stains. Perfectly ironed. The man stared at her with lots of curiosity but gave no expression. He stared like he could find answers to any of problem he had in her. Elena couldn't move and speak. She just stood. She could feel her heart beating fast. The silence between them grew longer with ever passing minute. The noise kept getting louder. She could hear her own pulse now. The man in the suv didn't yell. He didn't curse. He didn't even blink. He just kept staring at her. And in that moment Elena felt something she couldn't quite name yet. The kind of man who didn't think nor ask twice before taking a decision. She opened her mouth to speak but closed them back again. Her hands were fist at her sides. A horn blared from behind, sharp and impatient, and it broke whatever had been holding them both in place. Elena stumbled back onto the sidewalk, her legs finally remembering how to move properly. Her bag slipped off her shoulder and she caught it just before it hit the ground. The man didn't drive off right away. He watched her a second longer, his eyes tracing her the way someone studies a puzzle they already knew the answer to. Then, without a word, the window rolled back up, sealing him behind black glass and her own reflection. The suv eased forward, slow and unbothered, as if nothing had happened, as if he hadn't almost ended her life for good. Elena stood frozen in place , chest heaving, watching the suv disappear into the flow of traffic like it belonged to a whole different world than the one she lived in. "Hey. You okay?" A voice broke through. She turned. An old man selling delicious pastries from a nearby stall was looking at her, concern written all over his face. "Yeah," she managed, though her voice didn't sound like hers. "Yeah, I'm fine." She wasn't. Her hands were still shaking. Her mouth had gone dry.her body was still in shock. She glanced at her phone. 8:27am. Eight minutes. The near accident, the strange man in the suv,the same eyes that had looked at her like he could find the answer to any of its problems. all of it would have to wait. She shoved the thought down, the way she shoved down most things lately, and ran the rest of the way to Old Miller Street Cafe. The bell above the door jingled as she pushed inside, breathless, her damp hair sticking to the back of her neck. Mrs. Bonnie was already behind the counter, arms crossed, watching the clock like it owed her money. "8:31," Mrs. Bonnie said flatly. "Cutting it close, Elena." "I know, I'm sorry, there was traffic, and then" Elena stopped herself. There was no way to explain the black suv, the man, the way her whole body had gone still like prey caught in headlights. It would sound insane. "It won't happen again." Mrs. Bonnie studied her for a moment, taking in her flushed face, the sweat on her top, the slight tremble in her hands. Whatever she saw made her soften, just barely. "Get changed. There's a line already forming." Elena nodded and hurried to the back room, grateful for the small mercy. She tied on her apron with fingers that still weren't quite steady, and caught her reflection in the cracked mirror by the lockers. Her eyes looked different. Wider. Haunted, scared. She told herself it was just the adrenaline. Just a near miss with a rich man in an expensive car who probably forgot about her the second his window rolled up. But some part of her, the part that had felt his eyes on her like a brand, didn't believe her own words at all. She stepped out onto the floor, plastered on the customer-service smile she'd perfected over three years, and lost herself in the rhythm of orders and steaming milk and clinking cups. For a while, the morning's chaos faded into the background humming of the cafe. Until, hours later, a black car pulled up outside. Not the same one as before it was smaller, sleeker, a sedan instead of an suv. A driver in a plain gray suit stepped out, walked directly to the counter, and set down a folded slip of paper without ordering anything. "For Elena," he said, his voice giving nothing away. "That's you, isn't it?" Elena's stomach dropped. She hadn't told anyone her name today. Not the cab driver. Not the pastry vendor. Not a single stranger since she'd left her apartment. Her fingers trembled as she unfolded the paper. Just a few words, written in sharp, deliberate handwriting. “We'll talk soon”. She looked up, but the driver was already walking away, already climbing back into the sedan, already pulling off down Old Miller Street like he'd never been there at all. Elena stood behind the counter, the slip of paper burning in her hand, and for a second she forgot how to breathe. Whoever he was, he knew her name. And somehow, she had the terrible feeling this was only the beginning
