Chapter 5

Alan stayed in Isabella’s office, going nowhere—he had to rely on this woman to find Leah.More than ten minutes later, Isabella walked in. “Do you have a cell phone?”Alan pulled out his old-fashioned phone, which could only make calls. “Yes.” It had been a birthday gift from Hank.Isabella chuckled. “What era are we in, and you’re still using a phone like this? Here.” She handed him a large-screen smartphone. “From now on, you answer whenever I call, day or night. My number is already in it.”Alan took the phone and examined it. He had seen this kind of phone on TV before—he liked new, techy things too. But back then, never having left Fog Ridge, there was no way he could own such a high-end device. Although he was annoyed by Isabella’s “answer whenever I call, day or night” demand, he couldn’t resist the lure of the smartphone. Without a second word, he picked it up and started swiping his finger across the screen.Watching Alan act like he had never seen such a phone before, Isabella couldn’t help but want to laugh—could it be that this guy had really been living in the mountains all along?“I have a task for you. Listen carefully. Go home right now and give your potion to the girl who gave you two hundred dollars last time—she’s my younger cousin. Got it?”Alan nodded repeatedly. “Got it.”Taking a taxi back to the Montgomery villa, Susan, who had received a call from her cousin, paced around the living room. She finally saw the person who had looked like a beggar in the park that day. “Where’s the potion?” That was the first thing out of her mouth.Alan took two bottles of potion from his pocket and handed them to Susan. He had a good impression of this woman—she was a million times better than her cousin.“This… two bottles are enough?” Susan asked, blinking.“Yes. After two bottles, whether it’s a person or a dog, the problem will be completely cured.”Given how her dog had reacted last time, Susan naturally trusted this completely. She took the potion and went upstairs.A little while later, she came bouncing back down. “Come with me.”“Where?” he asked.“My cousin said she wants to dress up her servant so he looks nice and presentable.”The word “servant” bothered Alan, but once they reached the mall and saw the clothes Susan picked out for him one after another as he tried them on, he let it go.No matter how old a woman is, stepping into a mall is like a dragon entering the sea. Even though she wasn’t buying clothes for herself, Susan put in great effort, making Alan try on all sorts of outfits. She picked out about ten sets in total. When it came time to pay, Alan grimaced. “How much is it? I don’t have any money.” He had been worried the whole way—if they asked him to pay, he’d be done for.Susan giggled. “Oh, you. Didn’t my cousin say? She’s buying you clothes. You don’t have to pay.”Inside the mall, Alan became a clothes rack. For the first time in his life, he saw so many outfits. Susan had excellent taste—most of the clothes were fashionable and youthful. Alan tried on dozens of sets. With a wave of her hand, Susan bought more than twenty outfits and over a dozen pairs of shoes. He threw his old clothes into the trash and changed completely into the new ones.Susan looked him over from left to right, feeling like something was missing. Then it dawned on her. “Your hair—it’s too outdated. Change it.”And so Alan was dragged into a hair salon. A rather effeminate man kept calling him “dear Susan” this and “dear Susan” that, giving Alan goosebumps all over.Fortunately, the effeminate man didn’t do anything over the top. Although his appearance wasn’t likable, his hairdressing and styling skills were decent. When Alan walked out of the salon, he looked completely transformed, like a brand-new person. There was no trace of the country bumpkin who had just come to town from the countryside.Susan was quite pleased with Alan, the “creation” she had spent so much time on. “You know, you’re not bad-looking. Now you look just like a rich young gentleman. Since you saved my dog, come on—I’ll treat you to a meal.”Free food and free clothes—Alan wasn’t about to refuse. Catching a glimpse of his fresh, sharp reflection in a shop window, his mood lifted considerably. Damn, I can look this handsome too.Walking out of the mall, Susan was satisfied with her work over the past few hours. She had transformed a country kid into a handsome, sunny, good-looking guy. Truth be told, the guy had a good foundation—he was not bad-looking at all. With these clothes, he was dozens of times better than those effeminate types or soft pretty boys at school who showed no trace of manliness, not to mention those flashy, attention-seeking weirdos. It was almost noon, and Susan had planned to take Alan to a restaurant for lunch. But as soon as they stepped out of the mall, they ran into a group of people that completely ruined her appetite.“Oh, where did you find this backup boyfriend? Decked out like a gentleman—has Lady Susan decided to open her harem again and found a new male concubine?” A group of five or six young men and women blocked their way, all apparently familiar with Susan.Winston Black was like a haunting ghost—at school, he buzzed around her like a fly. Now that she was finally on vacation and out shopping, this guy had followed her here too.Susan shot Winston an annoyed sideways glance. “Are you sick? You keep following me. It’s really annoying. Go cool off somewhere else.”Susan was a senior in high school and had been mature far beyond her age for quite some time. Winston had been relentlessly pursuing Susan Montgomery, the high school beauty, since his junior year. Susan had zero interest in rich second-generation kids who relied on their fathers’ money. Her cousin was her role model. She would never become a man’s accessory. She wanted to control her own life—men were at most just decoration.“Come on, Susan, don’t be so heartless. It’s been over a year. You know very well how I’ve treated you. And I still can’t get so much as a single proper glance from you? Am I, Winston Black, really that bad? You go shopping without me and bring some guy who popped out of nowhere instead… Oh, I see.” Winston turned to Alan. “Hey, you. Who are you? Don’t you know Susan is my girl?”Susan stepped directly in front of Alan. These people had no other skills, but pushing around others—that they were good at. Alan had just arrived. With his build, he couldn’t take a beating from Winston and his four or five friends. Her task today wasn’t just to buy clothes—it was also to make sure Alan got back home safely. “Go away. Who this is—I don’t have to tell you. Alan, let’s go.” With that, she grabbed Alan and turned to leave. The Montgomery family was well-known in Silver Bay City. Her cousin Isabella Montgomery not only wielded influence in both politics and business but was also the goddess of countless men. No matter how arrogant and domineering Winston was, he wouldn’t dare do anything to her—Susan knew that very well.Winston let out a cold laugh and chased after them. The group blocked the pair once again
