Chapter 1: The $500,000 Contract
The hospital hallway smelled like disinfectant and fear.
Ava Johnson clutched the bill in her shaking hands. $500,000. Due in 7 days.
Or they would stop her motherâs cancer treatment.
âMs. Johnson?â The doctorâs voice was soft. Too soft. âWithout the next round of chemo, we canât guaranteeââ
âI know,â Ava cut him off, blinking hard. âIâll get the money.â
She didnât know how.
Three months ago her life was normal. Coffee shop job. $12 an hour. A small apartment in Port Harcourt. Sunday dinners with her mom.
Then the diagnosis came. Stage 4 ovarian cancer. Aggressive.
The first round of chemo was $80,000. Ava maxed out 3 credit cards. Borrowed from friends. Sold her car.
The second round was $90,000.
The third was $120,000.
Now this bill. $500,000 for the final round + surgery. Insurance called it âexperimentalâ and refused to pay.
Her mom, Grace Johnson, was in Room 204. 52 years old. Bald from chemo but still smiling. Still telling Ava jokes.
âMama bear, donât you dare cry,â Grace had said yesterday, squeezing Avaâs hand with her thin fingers. âWeâll figure this out.â
Ava was lying. She had no idea how.
That night she worked a double shift at the coffee shop. 6 AM to 10 PM. Her feet ached. Her tips were $23.47.
She cried in the bathroom and washed her face before going back out.
Her phone buzzed in her apron pocket. Unknown number.
Ava ignored it. Customers needed refills.
It buzzed again. And again. 6 missed calls.
On her break she finally answered. Her voice was hoarse.
âHello?â
âMiss Johnson. This is Mr. Damian Blackwoodâs assistant.â The voice was cold, professional. Like a knife. âMr. Blackwood would like to meet with you. Today. Regarding a business proposal.â
Ava frowned, wiping coffee off her hands. âDamian Blackwood? The billionaire? The one on Forbes?â
âYes. 6 PM. Blackwood Tower. Come alone. A car will be sent.â Click.
Ava stared at her phone. Was this a scam? A prank?
But the hospital needed money in 7 days. What did she have to lose?
Six hours later, Ava was staring up at 80 floors of glass and steel. Blackwood Tower. The most expensive building in the city.
Her thrifted blazer felt cheap. Her shoes were worn. She hadnât slept in 2 days.
The receptionist didnât even look up from her computer. âName?â
âAva Johnson.â
âFloor 78. Heâs waiting.â
The elevator was all mirrors and gold. It went up so fast her ears popped.
Ava fixed her hair, her makeup. It didnât matter. She looked tired. Broke. Desperate.
Because she was.
Ding. The doors opened.
The office was bigger than her entire apartment. Floor to ceiling windows. City skyline at sunset. Marble floors.
And behind a black desk sat him.
Damian Blackwood.
Tall. Black tailored suit. Dark skin. Jaw like it was carved from stone. Eyes that didnât blink. He looked 32. Cold. Powerful. Dangerous.
There were photos of him online. At galas. With models. Closing billion-dollar deals.
He never smiled in any of them.
He didnât stand when she entered.
âMiss Johnson.â His voice was deep. No accent. Just authority.
âMr. Blackwood.â Avaâs voice shook.
He slid a black folder across the desk. It was thick. Legal.
âI have a proposition for you.â
Ava opened it. Her breath caught.
At the top of the first page in bold letters:
MARRIAGE CONTRACT.
Her knees almost buckled.
âMarry me,â Damian said simply. Like he was ordering coffee. âFor 12 months. In exchange, I pay your motherâs $500,000 hospital bill. Today. In full.â
Ava laughed. One bitter, broken sound. âIs this a joke? A reality show?â
âNo.â Damian leaned back in his chair. âI donât joke about business.â
âWhy me? You could marry anyone. A model. An actress. Someone from your world.â
âBecause youâre desperate,â he said, eyes cold and assessing. âAnd desperate people donât ask questions. They sign. I need a wife for a merger. My grandfatherâs will states I must be married to take control of Blackwood Enterprises. You need money for your mother. Mutually beneficial.â
Avaâs hands shook. She pulled out her wallet. The photo of her mom was inside. Grace, before chemo. Hair long. Laughing at Avaâs birthday.
âTerms?â she whispered.
âPublic wife. Private strangers. No touching. No dating others. No feelings. Separate bedrooms. You attend 4 events per month with me. You play the part.â
âAnd then?â
âAt the end of 12 months, we divorce. You get $1 million extra. I get control of my company. We both walk away.â
The room was silent except for the hum of the AC.
Outside, the city lights were starting to come on.
Ava looked at the pen. A Mont Blanc. Expensive.
Then at the contract. 12 months of her life.
Then at Damian. His face gave nothing away.
Her mother had 7 days.
The memory of Grace saying âdonât cry, mama bearâ hit her hard.
She picked up the pen. Her hand was shaking so bad she almost dropped it.
âIâll do it.â
Damianâs eyes flickered. Just once. Surprise?
âSign here. And here. Initial here.â
Ava signed her name. Ava Johnson.
The ink was permanent.
As the last letter dried, Damian stood and walked to the window. His back was to her.
âCongratulations, Mrs. Blackwood,â he said without turning around. âThe money will be in the hospitalâs account by morning. A car will pick you up for the wedding tomorrow. 8 AM. City Hall. Be on time.â
Avaâs chest tightened. Relief flooded her so hard she felt dizzy. Guilt. Fear.
She just sold her life for 12 months.
But her mom would live.
She walked out of Blackwood Tower into the night air. It was cold.
Her phone buzzed immediately.
Hospital: âPayment received. Treatment continues. Next chemo scheduled.â
Ava sank to her knees on the sidewalk right there and cried. Not quiet tears. Ugly, relieved, terrified sobs.
A stranger in a suit walked past and didnât even look.
She was Mrs. Blackwood now.
And she had no idea what sheâd just gotten herself into.Ava didnât sleep that night.
She sat by her momâs hospital bed. Grace was sleeping, an IV in her arm. The machines beeped softly.
Ava held her momâs hand. âI did it, Mama,â she whispered. âI got the money. Youâre gonna be okay.â
Grace stirred and smiled in her sleep.
Ava looked at her phone. 3 new emails. From Damian Blackwoodâs lawyer.
Subject: WEDDING DETAILS - 8AM CITY HALL. DRESS CODE: FORMAL.
She closed her eyes. In 8 hours she would be a married woman.
To a stranger.
But her mom would live. That was all that mattered.
Right?
